Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game. The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches. All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes. The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education. Additional information about the NABC, its programs and membership, can be found at www.nabc.org. 5 .

NBA Court Realty Dan Cervone (New York University), Luke Bornn (Simon Fraser University), and Kirk Goldsberry (University of Texas) The Court is a Real Estate Market Throughout a basketball possession, teams fight to control valuable court space. For example, - being near the basket or in the corner 3 areas leads to high-value shots - having the ball at the top of the arc keeps many pass options open - being open and undefended anywhere on the court eases ball movement and minimizes turnovers. Using only patterns of ball movement such as passes, we are able to infer which regions of the court teams value most, and quantify the effects of controlling such regions. This leads to new spatial characterizations of team/player strategy, and value quantifications of positioning and spacing. For instance, we can compare the value of the space the ballcarrier controls with the value of the space his teammates control to better understand how different lineups manage on- and off-ball resources. • Former Ohio State Standout David Lighty Signs Two-Year Contract Extension with ASVEL in French Pro a League
Former Ohio State Standout David Lighty Signs Two-Year Contract Extension With ASVEL In French Pro A League David Lighty, who was a standout on the Ohio State men’s basketball team during his time in the program (2006-11), signed a two-year contract extension with ASVEL Basket of the French Pro A League. Lighty has played for ASVEL Basket in Villeurbanne, France (which is a suburb of Lyon) continuously since 2017. He also played with ASVEL, whose president is four-time NBA champion Tony Parker, from 2014-16. The new contract secures Lighty with ASVEL through 2024. Coming out of Villa-Angela St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, Lighty was a lesser-heralded member of the “Thad Five” 2006 recruiting class, which included Mike Conley, Daequan Cook, Othello Hunter and Greg Oden brought in by former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta. Coming out of high school, the Cleveland native was a four-star prospect, ranking No. 33 among all players and No. 13 among small forwards nationally. The 6-foot-5 small forward was the third-highest rated recruit in Ohio behind Kansas State’s Henry Walker and his classmate Cook. Lighty started only seven of 39 games as a true freshman, averaging 3.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game as part of the 2006-07 Buckeyes who lost to Florida in the national championship. Once Conley, Cook and Oden departed for the NBA, Lighty earned more playing time, starting all 37 contests with averages of 9.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game in 2007-08.

By Joe Kaiser ESPN Smith had a great 2011 -12, but he is an unrestricted free agent after this season. It took Danny Ferry exactly seven days in his new role as the Atlanta Hawks' president of basketball operations and general manager to completely change the face of the franchise. His ability to swiftly orchestrate separate deals to part with high-priced veterans Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams signaled a commitment to rebuilding and shed as much as $77 million still owed to the two veterans beyond next season. Fast-forward two-and-a-half months to today, and Ferry's rebuilt roster has only a handful of contracts that go beyond the 2012-13 season: • Al Horford : Signed through 2015-16. • Lou Williams : Signed through 2013-14. • John Jenkins : 2012 first-round pick. • Mike Scott : 2012 second-round pick. • Jeff Teague : Due to become a restricted free agent at season's end, barring an extension. Notice one big name we didn't mention: Josh Smith . The tantalizingly talented, yet often frustrating, forward is among the many Hawks entering the final year of their deals, and he represents arguably the biggest challenge for Ferry to date: what to do with Smith. If handled correctly, this could be the next step toward eventually turning the Hawks into a perennial playoff contender. Mishandled, and this could undo everything good that came out of the trades of Johnson and Williams. So the question is, what's the smarter move for Ferry and the Hawks? a) Negotiate an extension that will keep Smith in Atlanta for the long term.
