MONTHLY CHALLENGE The Challenge for our September Turners meeting is to make and turn a vessel based on Scott MacGillivray’s July presentation. Challenge options for you Ironmen: 1) turn a bowl and embellish the outside using a technique which you are comfortable with. 2) make a segmented vessel and incorporate a layer(s) or a feature ring using sheets of thin colored or contrasting veneers. 3) make a bowl or platter by starting with a squared rectangular block of solid wood and an arc (carefully and slowly) cutting it in two. Sandwich a slice of thin colored flexible plastic or even a few slices of dyed veneers between the 2 halves before gluing back together. Then mount and turn. 4) complete the prep steps in #2 above and then before you turn the blank ... do them all again with a second different curve to incorporate multiple bands of color. 5) Experienced resin casters can make a cast using epoxy or alumilite resin with dyes, pearlescent pigments, metallic powders, plant materials. When the cast has cured slice it thin and use the slices as layers in a bowl or platter.

Page 4 September 2019 TOYSAWDUST STORY

Due to a family situation, I was unable to attend the August work party. Special thanks go out to Richard Kalman for ram-rodding this event for me. I understand we had a good turnout considering some confusion due to there being no regular club meeting in August. I was delighted to see boxes of finished product awaiting me in my garage upon my return. Earl Horstman brought 180 of his special open wheel race cars that will bring pleasure to many children. Charles Steichen brought two boxes of hearts many of which will go to Loma Linda hospital to give to grieving parents who have lost a child. The keepsake box crew assembled 35 of Ed Smet’s fine boxes, many of which bore the various military insignia etched into the cover by Al Whitcomb. These will someday adorn the desks of servicemen. Len Musgrave’s bunch sprayed all items to a fine luster. Kangaroos, dogs, grasshoppers and frogs are in progress. Toy count to date is around 3500 entering the final few months of production. If you have toys in progress at home, finish them and bring them in. Our next work party is September 7th, 9:00, at my home 7321 E. Stone Creek Lane. See you then.
