  • We Now Know English Players Dive Too but the Embarrassment Produced When Caught out by Television Will Cause It to Die Out
Rafa Benitez: We now know English players dive too but the embarrassment produced when caught out by television will cause it to die out Don't forget that players are people, too. They don't like TV to show them cheating Rafa Benitez Thursday, 14 November 2013 There is never a week without a controversy in the Premier League, is there? I do not see as many of your games as I would like because there is a very big job to do for me here in Napoli, but it was easy to notice that the diving story became something everybody was talking about a lot, after Ashley Young won a penalty for Manchester United in San Sebastian against Real Sociedad. One incident can mean a lot of talking! The analysis is always very detailed in England. I remember when I was at Liverpool and our player David Ngog won a penalty at Anfield to make a draw against Birmingham City. It is always important to be honest about these things because people see the reality in front of them. I think I said that night – it was four years ago – that it was a wrong decision to give us the penalty. My approach with a situation like this is not always to talk to the player. Just one time and it is normal; no need to make a big point perhaps. But more than once – yes, have a word and make it clear how it can reflect on the reputation of him and, more importantly, the club. I can see that everyone is saying it must be stopped and I think that is a positive thing, but before everyone starts thinking about a lot of new solutions – like penalising players with video evidence – we must remember one of the big things that has changed since I started managing.

The World Health Organization in Cote d’Ivoire estimated as many as 9.6 million cases in 2010 and as many as 28,400 deaths.3 Since 2008, when the organization began counting confirmed malaria cases, admissions and deaths4, the number rose dramatically until 2010 and then fell, possibly be- cause civil war disrupted health systems, preventing families from accessing treatment and health workers from collecting reliable data. During this crisis, media reports showed that many malaria commodities were scarce or unavailable in the most affected regions. Today, malaria control is again a national priority under the leadership of Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, who came to power in April 2011. Three Global Fund grants worth more than $150 million are aiding recon- struction efforts, benefitting pregnant women and children under 5 years of age.5 Without such aid, children in Cote d’Ivoire may suffer 1 to 6 malaria episodes per year.6 Ivorians are currently undertaking a major challenge to reduce the impact of malaria following the distribution of over 7 million long lasting nets.

Our strategic direction has evolved significantly in the course of the year and, in this report, we intend to fill in the background to the major decisions we have taken, the strategy we have adopted and the programs implemented. In collaboration with our private and public sector partners, we continue to develop public health campaigns implemented by well-known and highly respected figures across the continent, including celebrities, artists and athletes as well as political, religious and cultural icons. Now more than ever, we use new technologies to celebrate African leadership and create a popular platform where anyone can send messages and lend his or her energy to the creation of a movement to promote public health. • Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players
Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players by Mohammad-Amin Nabavi A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2019 Mohammad-Amin Nabavi ABSTRACT This thesis examines the use of neural network modelling and ordinal logistic regression on a single season of data (2015-16) to score or rank soccer players. These scores and ranks are then compared with ones from FIFA EASports that are based on a much more extensive data set that includes more variables as well as historical data. Using repeated measures one-way ANOVA and subsequent multiple comparison testing, we conclude that a neural network model with ten nodes in one hidden layer is able to generate scores statistically similar to FIFA EASports, while ordinal logistic regression cannot. We confirm this result be also examining the ranks obtained by both the neural network model and the ordinal logistic regression model. Spearman rank correlations are also examined and confirm that a neural network with 10 nodes in one hidden layer also generates ranks statistically similar to FIFA EASports. We also demonstrate the use of association rule mining on one team’s data from the 2015-16 season to identify players and combinations thereof that are associated with winning (or not winning) a match. Analyses are based on data from the Italian Serie A League 2015-2016 season. ii Acknowledgements These past couple of years have proven to be the hardest period of my life so far.
