September 15, 2019 – Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Exodus 32: 7-11, 13-14 Yahweh tells Moses that the people are breaking His covenant with them by worshiping idols. He wants to destroy them, but Moses intercedes and saves his people. Second Reading: I Timothy 1: 12-17 Paul declares himself to be a true teacher, mostly because of all the grace he has received as a needy sinner. His conversion becomes the prototype for all those that follow. Gospel: Luke 15: 1-32, or 15: 1-10 The third parable of the three tells is the most famous, but all three speak of the mercy of . This third, more rightly titled “The Loving Father” rather than ”The Prodigal Son,” finds Jesus playing on His audience’s knowledge of two brother stories, in which the younger brother triumphs over the older one. Reflection: Like the shepherd looking for the lost sheep, the woman expends great energy searching for her lost coin. Also, like the shepherd, when the lost object is found there is a joyful celebration with friends and neighbors. This parable offers a refreshing female image for our God who does not give up on us until we are found. So we ask ourselves: Look around in your world:  What person or group of people seem lost?  What will you do about it?
