AREA INFORMATION – /HYDE PARK

Kensington Gardens & Hyde Park – 1 minute walk* from Bayswater Apartments is a royal residence set in Kensington Gardens, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London, England. It has been a residence of the British Royal Family since the 17th century, and is the official London residence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. Today, the State Rooms are open to the public and managed by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces, a non- profit organization that does not receive public funds.[1] The offices and private accommodation areas of the Palace remain the responsibility of the Royal Household and are maintained by the Royal Household Property Section. Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in London, and one of the , famous for its Speakers' Corner. The park was the site of the Great Exhibition of 1851, for which the Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton. The park is divided in two by the Serpentine and the Long Water. The park is contiguous with Kensington Gardens; Hyde Park is the largest of four parks which form a chain from the entrance of Kensington Palace through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, via Hyde Park Corner and Green Park (19 hectares), past the main entrance to and then on through Saint James's Park (23 hectares) to Parade in .

Page 8 of 12 BAYSWATER APARTMENTS, INVERNESS TERRACE, LONDON W2 AREA INFORMATION – SHOPPING CENTRE Whiteley’s – 6 minutes’ walk* from Bayswater Apartments -

In 1989 Whitley’s was re-opened as a shopping centre. The current Whitley’s contains a large number of shops and places to eat including Marks & Spencer, HMV, and a sushi bar. Leisure facilities include an Odeon cinema and bowling alley. The shopping centre never worked as a retail destination and became much maligned by the wealthy and sophisticated residents of nearby Notting Hill. Since 2005 a slow change of direction began under a new management regime which incorporated substantial physical improvements to the interior, the replacement of McDonalds with Rowley Leigh's new restaurant Le Café Anglais and a new food hall in the central mall area. In June 2008 the ground floor was transformed into what the management have called a 'food store', essentially a larger, more glamorous version of a department store food hall.

Westfield’s – 8 minute drive* from Bayswater Apartments Westfield London is a shopping centre in White City, London, United Kingdom, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The centre was developed by the at a cost of £1.6bn, on a site bounded by the (A3220), the West way (A40) and (A219). It opened on 30 October 2008 and became the largest covered shopping development in the capital, dethroning the Whit gift Centre in . The site is part of the White City district, where several other large scale development projects are under way or in the planning stages. The development is on a large brownfield site, part of which was once the location of the 1908 Franco- British Exhibition; the initial site clearance demolished the set of halls still remaining from the exhibition (their cheap-to- build, white-painted blank facades are said to be the origin of the name "White City"). Much of the site was in use as a railway depot excavated to a lower level and built over. The centre is noted for its size: it has a retail floor area of 150,000 m² (1.615m ft²), the equivalent of about 30 football pitches. At the time of its opening it was reported to be the second largest commercial centre in the UK (after Metro Centre near Newcastle). The nearest London Underground stations are Wood Lane, White City, Shepherd's Bush and Shepherd's Bush Market. The nearest rail station is Shepherd's Bush, served by suburban services and by longer distance Southern services between Milton Keynes Central and East Croydon.
