The Divine image as revelaed to Faustina Kowalska, by Eugene Kazimierowski, 1934 (, ) 2 May 5, 2019 • 3rd Sunday of MAy: the month of mary, music, and the eucharist!

hope you had a fruitful Lent and blessed Easter week. I am so encouraged Iby the prayers, participation, and profound living of the Liturgy during these holy days! This Easter season continues in our 25th Anniversary year with a month dedicated to Mary, Music and the Eucharist. Some may wonder, more than six months into our journey toward unity, what does “Great Grouping” mean, and how does that relate to Mary, music and the Eucharist?

The origin of “Great Grouping” came from my visits to our four parishes last summer. We were assigned the label, “Grouping 332,” but I did not think this numeric name was marketable or motivating. When I celebrated Masses, met the pastors and councils, and talked with our parishioners, what I heard the most was, “Father Jay, this is a great parish.” Great because that is how people feel about their parish. Great Biblically because teaches us, “Whoever wishes to become great among you must become a servant to others, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.” (Mark 10:42-44)

Jesus’ greatness is experienced in his smallness as a baby at Christmas; Jesus’ greatness is experienced in his 30 years of humble living, making his career as a carpenter; Jesus’ greatness is experienced by his calling of disciples to entrust them with his plan of salvation through the ; Jesus’ greatness is calling us to be at his right and left by uniting our sacrifices to his on the cross; Jesus’ greatness is dying for us as a criminal in order to open the gates of heaven; Jesus’ greatness is experienced in his littleness in the Eucharist.

No one demonstrates the greatness of grace better than Our Mother Mary. The Blessed , most exalted of all creatures, says, “My soul magnifies the greatness of the Lord… For the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” St. tells us, “Mary attributes nothing to her own merits. She refers all her greatness to the gift of the one whose essence is power and whose nature is greatness, for he fills with greatness and strength the small and the weak who believe in him.”

What are some other examples of God’s greatness evident in our parish? We have great music, led by “The” Adele, with so many gifted cantors, choir members and musicians. We are continuing our great Catholic speaker series that started with Mike Aquilina, then Fr. Jacques Phillipe and Fr. Potter... Now one of the greatest Pittsburgh-bornPittsburgh disciples of Christ, Dr. Scott Hahn, will join us on May 15 at John & Paul. Dr. Hahn will speak about the greatest gift of our Catholic Church: Our Eucharistic Lord. Then, the weekend of May 18- got feedback? 19, the Missionaries of the will celebrate the Masses and guide us toward Perpetual Adoration! Just as Sheetz is open 24/7, why should we Feel Free to Contact not have 24/7 access to our Eucharistic Lord? Father Jay through the

the catechist column from the bible by Jason Gawaldo, Director of Faith Formation Throughout salvation history, God frequently commands Read Exodus 32:1-20, the famous and tragic story of us to sacrifice to him the very things we are tempted to Israel’s worship of the golden calf at Mt. Sinai. Notice how worship in his place. Very often, we don’t overtly worship quickly God’s people were willing to substitute their own something else in place of God. It’s usually more on the money and jewelry for the Living God. And notice what lines of an implicit worship. Anything we place above happens to the golden calf at the end of the story. God is in God’s place. This is at the heart of our Lenten disciplines: getting something else out the way to make from the catechism more room for God in his proper place.

I’m reminded of that disturbing story in the life of Idolatry not only refers to false pagan worship. It remains a . Recall that God had promised Abraham countless descendants (see Genesis 15:1-21), but constant temptation to faith. Idolatry consists in divinizing Abraham didn’t have a legitimate son of his own. what is not God. Man commits idolatry whenever he honors Despite Abraham and Sarah’s old age, God gave them a and reveres a creature in place of God, whether this be son, . After Isaac had grown up a bit, after Abraham had time to ruminate in the excitement of the promise, gods or demons (for example, satanism), power, pleasure, God asked the unspeakable: “Take your son Isaac, your race, ancestors, the state, money, etc. Jesus says, “You only one, whom you love, and go the land of Moriah. cannot serve God and mammon.” Many martyrs died for There offer him up as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.” (Genesis 22:2) God not adoring “the Beast,” refusing even to simulate such had no desire for human sacrifice, and remember that he worship. Idolatry rejects the unique Lordship of God; stopped Abraham from actually doing this. God asked it is therefore incompatible with communion with God. for the sacrifice for Abraham’s sake, to make sure he was worshipping the Promise Giver and not the promise (paragraph 2113) itself.

Think also of the Exodus events and God’s institution of animal sacrifice. God had no desire for the blood first communions of animals. He said as much: “In the blood of calves, lambs, and goats I find no pleasure.” ( 1:11) God commanded daily animal sacrifice because God’s People daily were tempted to worship animals in place of God. God consistently commands us to offer as a sacrifice that which we are tempted to worship.

That same is true of our money. Just think of all the time we spend, the sacrifices we make, in pursuit of money. Again, earning a living is a good thing, and there is nothing intrinsically bad about money. But something that takes up so much of our time and energy and thought can very easily take time, energy, and thought away from God. And so he asks us to sacrifice, not all, Pray for our First Communicants who will receive Jesus but some of our money on a consistent basis, as a regular spiritual practice. in Holy Communion for the first time this weekend! Saints John & Paul Roman Catholic Church • sts-jp.org 9 I just recently read a statement that said, “Lent was the time to listen, learn, repent, and reconcile. Easter is the time for ACTION!” This means that, just because we come to Mass and sing, it is NOT the end of our responsibility. Perhaps we should consider by Adele Scherer, making resolutions, just as we do on January 1. If we all would think of how we could be Music Minister hospitable to just one person at Mass, such as the new person who just sat down next to us, we could soon begin to really FILL our church on other Sundays, not just Easter and Christmas! (Remember how our church was filled—all the Masses—on Easter Sunday? It was so great to see all those smiling faces and to hear the singing!) Consider inviting a family member or a friend who has not attended church for several years. Why not invite them to “come and see” how Saints John & Paul will make them feel welcome. Perhaps your own faith will become stronger just by helping others to come and participate each Sunday in the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection! Today, we’ll sing the hymn at Communion time, “Lord, when you came to the seashore, you weren’t seeking the wise or the wealthy, but only asking that I might follow. O Lord, in my eyes you were gazing, kindly smiling, my name you were saying.” When you come forward for the reception of the Holy Eucharist, think of what Jesus is saying to you.
