CapitaLand partners Community Development Councils for Green for Hope @ CapitaLand

First-time collaboration extends reach of CapitaLand Hope Foundation donations to underprivileged children islandwide

Singapore, 20 April 2011 – CapitaLand and the five Community Development Councils (CDCs) today announced that Green for Hope @ CapitaLand is extending its reach to beneficiaries islandwide with its first-time partnership with the CDCs.

The launch of Green for Hope @ CapitaLand 2011 in partnership with Community Development Councils was held this morning at ION Sky and graced by Guests-of- Honour Dr , Mayor of South West District; Dr , Mayor of North West District; and Mr , Mayor of North East District. They were joined by Mr James Koh, Director of CapitaLand Hope Foundation, and Mr Wong Hooe Wai, Chairman of CapitaLand’s Green Committee, in pledging their support for the collaboration.

This year, CapitaLand is partnering the five CDCs for the first time to bring the donations from its Green for Hope @ CapitaLand campaign to more beneficiaries in . Green for Hope @ CapitaLand is an annual recycling campaign that marries green efforts with philanthropy. Taking place from 1 January to 30 June, Green for Hope @ CapitaLand encourages CapitaLand’s tenants, shoppers and serviced residence guests to go green by recycling, and in doing so, ‘earn’ donations to benefit underprivileged children. CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF), CapitaLand’s philanthropic arm, will donate S$2 for every kilogramme of recyclable waste collected from the participating CapitaLand properties.

CapitaLand’s properties have been grouped into five clusters, each of which has been partnered with a CDC. The maximum donation for each CDC is capped at S$120,000 (equivalent to 60,000 kg of recyclable waste), and the top three clusters with the largest amount of recyclable waste collected will earn additional donations of S$50,000, S$30,000 and S$20,000 respectively for their partner CDC.

Through the collaboration, CHF’s donations will go towards key programmes that benefit underprivileged children across Singapore, to be identified by the CDCs. This is in line with CHF’s focus on programmes for shelter, education and healthcare for underprivileged children in Singapore and overseas.

The key thrusts of the CDCs comprise “Assisting the needy”, “Bonding the people” and “Connecting the community”. The CDCs, in achieving the key thrust of “Connecting the community”, develop strategic partnerships with corporate and community partners to 1 better serve the residents in the “Many Helping Hands” approach. The CDCs encourage the able to help those in need, tapping wider community resources for community self- help in sustained and innovative ways. The collaboration with CapitaLand amplifies both good corporate social responsibility and forms part of CDCs’ “Many Helping Hands” approach towards building community self-help.

Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District, shared: “Through this milestone collaboration with CapitaLand Hope Foundation, about 5,000 needy school-going children islandwide, to be identified by the CDCs, will receive assistance to buy school and daily necessities under CapitaMalls Asia’s ‘My Schoolbag’ programme and from the CDCs’ localised programmes through funds raised from recycling efforts by CapitaLand tenants between January to June this year. This programme helps to promote a recycling culture among CapitaLand tenants and at the same time help to reduce the financial burden of needy families with school-going children. This is a great example of the ‘Many Helping Hands’ approach where the more able help the less able in the community which the CDCs are promoting.”

Quotes from the CDC Mayors and People’s Association on the collaboration are in Annex A .

Mr Lim Chin Beng, Chairman of CapitaLand Hope Foundation, said: “The Green for Hope campaign is in line with the Foundation’s focus on supporting programmes for the shelter, education and healthcare needs of underprivileged children. Since the campaign’s launch, over 2,400 tonnes of paper, plastic and aluminium have been recycled through the green efforts of CapitaLand’s tenants, shoppers and serviced residence guests, as well as primary schools across Singapore. CapitaLand Hope Foundation’s total donation of over S$3.2 million since 2008 has benefited underprivileged children from 10 children’s charities and 170 primary schools. We are pleased to partner all five Community Development Councils for the first time in Green for Hope @ CapitaLand 2011, extending our donations to a wider community and reaching more beneficiaries across Singapore.”

Over 90 children take a PEEK at ION Orchard To mark the collaboration between CapitaLand and the CDCs, a PEEK (Providing Educational Exposure for Kids) tour for over 90 children aged seven to 12 was held at ION Orchard today. PEEK is a volunteer-led “behind-the-scenes” educational tour of CapitaLand properties that educates children about eco-friendly issues. CapitaLand volunteers brought the children to view various eco-friendly facilities in the shopping mall and learnt about how tenants play their part for the environment and actively collect recyclable waste for Green for Hope @ CapitaLand.

Central Singapore CDC Mr Zainudin Nordin, Mayor of Central Singapore District, said : “This collaboration illustrates Central Singapore CDC’s ongoing efforts of Connecting the Community. By engaging like-minded partners such as CapitaLand to give back to society, we are adopting a ‘Many Helping Hands’ approach to increase resources available to our beneficiaries. This funding will be used to build capabilities of children from low income families because a level playing field in education is one of the best ways of assisting our needy to break out of the poverty cycle.”

North East CDC Mr Teo Ser Luck, Mayor of North East District, said: “It is encouraging to see such an innovative approach to CSR. CapitaLand is not only doing its part to save the earth but to ‘invest’ the savings in our future – by providing our children with education essentials. North East CDC will be using part of the $120,000 for 300 disabled children from MINDS and the Spastic School to purchase essentials they may require for school.”

North West CDC Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, said : “North West CDC believes in building a strong social safety net for our residents – especially our underprivileged. Our goal is made possible with the support of individuals and companies who have stepped forward to partner the CDC as part of our ‘Many Helping Hands’ approach. Our Club-100 @ North West members, for example, pledge a minimum of $100 donation every month to the North West Food Aid Fund to help needy families. Today, we wish to extend our gratitude to CapitaLand for their kind contribution in supporting our effort to help the underprivileged students, and at the same time, we wish to encourage more people to come forward to help the needy in our district.”

South East CDC Mr Matthias Yao, Mayor of South East District, said: “Through this project, CapitaLand has assumed the role of a public educator to encourage good recycling habits within the community. By working with the 5 CDCs, this collaboration not only reaches out to the masses but also contributes to the well being of the underprivileged school kids, who have the same physical needs as other children.”

South West CDC Dr Amy Khor, Mayor of South West District, said : “South West CDC is delighted to be able to expand its ‘Back to School’ Programme with CapitaLand Hope Foundation’s support. Through our collaboration with CapitaLand, besides the 300 needy students from the ‘My Schoolbag’ programme, another 500 needy students in the district will receive new school uniforms, shoes, bag and stationery to start their education for the academic year 2012. Mindful of current concerns over rising cost of living, the South West CDC has been expanding many of its local assistance programmes to help more residents, including the lower middle-income families. Hence, the South West CDC has increased the qualifying household income ceiling criteria for its local ComCare schemes to $2,500 per month to help low-income as well as lower middle-income households in the district.”

People’s Association Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chief Executive Director, PA, mentioned : “This collaboration is a showcase of how PA and organisations such as CapitaLand can work together to contribute back to the community through innovative ways. This project will not be successful without the involvement of various stakeholders such as CapitaLand’s tenants, shoppers and its staff volunteers. By engaging and leveraging on the resources and strengths of our partners, the PA is able to reach out and bring together the different segments of the community in strengthening Social Capital.” 4
