Nakamura is the top USCF rated player at 2858, as published on 1 February 2012. Message from the Honourable Ida Chong Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Province of British Columbia, I want to welcome all players, supporters, volunteers, and family members to the 2012 Canadian Open Chess Championship, being held in Victoria for the first time. Our government is proud to support world-class events such as this championship, which draws some of the best chess players from Canada and across the globe to compete in British Columbia. This tournament is a great opportunity for our local players to engage in elite-level chess, and it’s also a chance for us to highlight the beauty and uniqueness of Victoria and Vancouver Island. I hope you will all take the opportunity to do some exploring while you’re here, and what you see will make you want to return. I would like to recognize and thank Victoria Chess and the many volunteers, supporters and sponsors who have made this event possible. Best wishes and good luck to all the players vying for the Canadian Open Chess Championship title. Sincerely, Ida Chong, FCGA Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development -3- Welcome to Victoria from the CO2012 Organizing Committee Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia and is situated on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, just 40 km from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Victoria is surrounded by the ocean, mountains and forest. There are endless opportunities to explore the rugged coast within steps of the city. Victoria has been the host city for two Canadian Youth Chess Championships, the Canadian Chess Challenge, many provincial and local tournaments and now the Canadian Open. This is the first time for the Canadian Open Chess Championship in Victoria and we are very proud to be the host city. We hope that you enjoy the tournament and your stay in Victoria. If you have the time you may want to extend your stay and explore Vancouver Island or the adjacent Gulf Islands. Or maybe schedule a return visit to play in the Grand Pacific Open (Easter Weekend) or outdoor chess at the beach and downtown all summer long. Please come back and visit again soon. And tell your friends about our island in the Pacific. On behalf of Victoria Chess and all the organizations and individuals involved in this event, best wishes for great games and good times in Victoria are extended to all participants in the Canadian Open Chess Championship. TTHHEE PPUUZZZZLLIINNGG SSIIDDEE OOFF CCHHEESSSS Jeff Coakley A NEW YEAR’S RIDE TO THE NORMAL SIDE number 57 December 28, 2013 For many players, the holiday season is associated with unusual chess problems. The Puzzling Side of Chess takes the opposite approach. To celebrate the end of each year, we cross over, for a brief moment in time, to “the normal side of chess”. As described in our first holiday column (21), normal chess means direct mates, endgame studies, and game positions. So here, for your New Year’s entertainment, is a selection of twelve standard problems. Cheers, everyone! Happy New Year from the Chess Cafe! Let’s begin our journey into the world of chess normalcy with a simple mate in two. Then we’ll gradually work our way up to the harder stuff. 1 w________w áwdwHkdwd] àdwIw)wdw] ßwdwdwGwd] Þdwdwdwdw] Ýwdwdwdwd] Üdwdwdwdw] Ûwdwdwdwd] Údwdw$wdw] wÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈw White to mate in 2 Miniature problems, with seven pieces or less, have always been a favourite of mine, especially mates in two. Samuel Loyd, in his book Chess Strategy (1878), called such positions “intimidated king problems”. The black king is not intimidated in the next mate in two. In fact, the black forces outnumber the white. Sam Loyd had these two things to say about his composition: “This problem is especially constructed to give a deceptive appearance to mislead the solver ...” “To amateur solvers, ..

Considering the abundance of material regarding this topic that was gathered, we decided to make this book only the first, lower level of the “Positional sacrifice” edition. My father and I worked hard to make sure that the new book will be as interesting as the first one, but also more adapted to the wider audience.
