Dartington Report on Beetles 2015
Report on beetles (Coleoptera) collected from the Dartington Hall Estate, 2015 by Dr Martin Luff 1. Introduction and Methods The majority of beetle recording in 2015 was concentrated on three sites and habitats: 1. Further sampling of moss on the Deer Park wall (SX794635), as mentioned in my 2014 report. This was done on two dates in March by MLL and again in October, aided by Messrs Tony Allen and Clive Turner, both experienced coleopterists. 2. Beetles associated with the decomposing body of a dead deer. The recently (accidentally) killed deer was acquired on 12th May by Mike Newby who pegged it out under wire netting in the small wood adjacent to 'Flushing Meadow', here referred to as 'Flushing Copse' (SX802625). The body was lifted regularly and beaten over a collecting tray, initially every week, then fortnightly and then monthly until early October. In addition, two pitfall traps were installed just beside the corpse, with a small amount of preservative in each. These were emptied each time the site was visited. 3. Water beetles sampled on 28th October, together with Tony Allen and Clive Turner, from the ponds and wheel-rut puddles on Berryman's Marsh (SX799615). Other work again included the contents of the nest boxes from Dartington Hills and Berrymans Marsh at the end of October, thanks to Mike Newby and his volunteer helpers. 2. Results In all, 203 beetle species were recorded in 2015, of which 85 (41.8%) were additions to the Dartington list. This increase over the 32% new in 2014 (Luff, 2015) results partly from sampling habitats (carrion, fresh-water) not previously examined. -

Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. This survey was commissioned in order to assess the site’s invertebrate assemblage in a standardised and repeatable way both internally between fields and sections and temporally between years. Eight fields were selected across the estate with two in the north, two in the central block -

RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots. -

[email protected] RESUMEN Se revisó el género Scaphidium Olivier, 1790, de México y Centroamérica, con base en 1,425 ejemplares procedentes de trece colecciones entomológicas. Se registraron 37 especies nuevas para la ciencia. Se presenta una clave para la determinación de las 46 especies de la región; para cada una se incluyen los siguientes aspectos: diagnosis, descripción, variación, material examinado, localidad tipo, distribución, hábitat, hospederos (si existe la información), comentarios acerca de especies similares, ilustraciones del la especie en vista dorsal y lateral, edeago y/o estructuras diagnósticas y mapa de la distribución geográfica conocida. El país con mayor riqueza específica es Costa Rica (22 spp.) seguido de México (20 spp.) y Panamá (13 spp.). Se registran diez especies de hongos hospederos de diez familias. 52% de las especies sólo se conocen de un país y 60% son exclusivas de alguna provincia biótica. Las zonas de altitud baja (0 a 1000 msnm) tienen mayor número de especies (35), mientras que en las montañas (2000 a 2600 msnm) solo se tienen registradas cinco especies. A review of Staphylinidae known from peat bogs of Belarus is presented with data on their distribution at various sites. The staphylinid fauna, as reported here, includes 66 species, 33 genera, and 10 subfamilies. The results showed a low species richness of rove beetles and a high occurrence of a small number of species. The regional zoogeography and composition of rove beetles in the Belarusian peat bogs are examined, and species are grouped in five main zoogeographical complexes and 7 chorotypes, reflecting their distribution. Most species had a European (26.15 %), Holarctic (21.53 %) and also Sibero-European (18.46 %) distribution. The Belarusian peat bogs are important ecosystems for survival of boreal species, including cold adapted beetles occurring in more southern latitudes. These includ specialized inhabitants of peat bogs: Ischnosoma bergrothi, Gymnusa brevicornis, Euaesthetus laeviusculus and Atheta arctica. The high proportion of boreal and boreo-montane species in the recent Belarusian peat bogs fauna clearly reflects its great proximity to cold habitats. The plots consisted of unmanaged vegetation communities representing typical beech forest, mixed broadleaf and conifer forest, Turkey oak forest, and cork oak forest respectively. With the present study, we identi- fied beetle assemblages to species level and investigated whether the type of vegetation affects beetle communities. In order to detect more of the species present and perform a better comparison among study sites, samples were collected with two types of traps: flight interception traps hanging from tree branches (n = 1 per plot) and emergence traps mounted on deadwood like fallen branches or trunks (n = up to 8 per plot, depending on the availability of deadwood pieces). -

The presently accepted classification implies a sister-group relationship between these families. The enormous clade of Staphylinidae, if indeed monophyletic, has its basal-most dichotomies inadequately hypothesized. We analysed 240 parsimony-informative larval and adult morphological characters for 34 terminals of carrion (3) and rove beetles (31) and rooted the obtained topologies on Neopelatops (Leiodidae). The most fully resolved topologies from the combined dataset consistently suggest that carrion and rove beetles are indeed monophyletic sister-groups. Two ancient species-poor rove- beetle subfamilies (Apateticinae with two genera in the eastern Palaearctic, and the monogeneric Holarctic Trigonurinae) branch off as a clade from the rest of Staphylinidae, rather than with members of the Oxyteline Group. -
