THE NOTES:

------TONIGHT'S GAME NOTES------

- The New York Islanders look to improve to 99-98-13-14 all-time against the Washington Capitals and 45-50-11-7 on the road

- The Islanders look to split the series 1-1

- Forward Anders Lee will appear in his 500th NHL career game, all with the Islanders

- Forward Josh Bailey will play in his 872nd NHL career game, matching Clark Gillies for 4th on the Islanders all-time list

------SO FAR THIS SEASON------

- The Islanders won a majority of face-offs in each of the first five games for the first time in franchise history (since face-offs have been tracked (1997- 98)). They rank second in the league with a 56.8 FOW%.

- The Islanders have allowed eleven goals so far this season, their second fewest through six games in club history (nine in 1976-77).

- Semyon Varlamov joins Chris Osgood and Jaroslav Halak as the only Islanders to go 3-0-0 in the first four games of the season.

- Varlamov's season-opening shutout streak of 142:10 was the 8th longest scoreless streak to start a season in NHL history. He had previously broken Rick DiPietro's club record scoreless streak to start the season (115:35, 2003-04).

- Forward Mathew Barzal recorded his 16th career regular-season game with three or more points on Jan. 21 vs. NJD.

- Defenseman Noah Dobson played 20:24 on Thursday, Jan. 21 vs. NJD, tying a career-high. He recorded his first NHL multi-point game (2A) and blocked seven shots -- matching the most by an Islander defenseman since Calvin deHaan had eight on Dec. 20, 2016 vs. BOS. He became the youngest Islander defenseman (21 years, 15 days) with a multi-point game (and a multi-assist game) since Travis Hamonic, who had four multi-point games as a 20-year-old and three multi-assist games as a 20-year-old.

- Josh Bailey recorded his 323rd career assist on Jan. 21 vs. NJD, matching Brent Sutter 8th on the Islanders all-time list.

- Goaltender Semyon Varlamov recorded 27 saves on January 18 vs. Boston to become the first goaltender in Islanders history to record a shutout in each of his first two appearances of a season and just the 14th goaltender in NHL history to do so.

- The Islanders were a part of four shutouts in a stretch of five games or fewer for the third time in franchise history (Dec. 23-29 2007, NYI went 2-2-0 all by shutout; Mar. 19-26, 2019, NYI went 2-3-0 losing three of four shutouts; Jan. 14-24 2021, NYI went 3-2-0 winning two of four shutouts)

- Jean-Gabriel Pageau recorded his first game-winning goal with the Islanders on January 18 vs. Boston, his second with the team and 90th career goal.

- Anders Lee, Brock Nelson, Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock are four Islanders who have active consecutive game streaks of at least 200 games (Lee 274, Nelson 251, Barzal 238, Pulock 201). They are three of just 25 players in the NHL who have played every game since the start of the 2017-18 season. On Jan. 24 at NJD, Brock Nelson became the sixth Islander to play in 250 consecutive games and Ryan Pulock became the third Islander defenseman to play in 200 consecutive games.

- Josh Bailey is two games shy (871) of passing Clark Gillies (872) for 4th place on the franchise's all-time games played list and he can move into third place on the list by the end of this season.

- Islanders 2014 Third Round (78th overall) draft pick Ilya Sorokin made his NHL debut on January 16 at the New York Rangers, becoming the first goaltender in Islander history to make his NHL debut against the Rangers. He is also the first goalie to make his NHL debut as an Islander since Christopher Gibson (January 2, 2016), and the first Islander to start in his NHL debut since Jean-Francois Berube on October 10, 2015.

------CAREER NOTES------

- Anders Lee has the fourth-longest consecutive game streak (274) among all-time Islanders. Brock Nelson (6th) and Mathew Barzal (9th) have both moved into the top-10.

- Captain Anders Lee is in his third season as Islanders captain. He is one game shy of reaching the 500-game milestone. Since his first full NHL season in 2013-14, Lee is tied for seventh among American-born plays in career goals (174). Additionally, Lee ranks second among active players in career goals by players drafted in the 6th round.

- Josh Bailey is in his 13th season in the NHL, making him the longest tenured Islander on the roster. Bailey, 31, has played in 871 NHL games, all with NYI.

- Brock Nelson is in his eighth season in the NHL. Brock Nelson led the Islanders in goals in both the 2019-20 regular season (26) and post-season (9, tied). Nelson, 29, took (1,188) and won (615) more faceoffs than anyone on the Islanders last season and finished above 50% (51.77%) in the face-off dot for the first time in his career.

- Cal Clutterbuck is the NHL’s active leader in career hits (3,166). Clutterbuck, 33, skated in his 800th NHL game on Nov. 2, 2019 becoming the 11th player from his draft class to reach that milestone and just the second player drafted outside the first round.

- Matt Martin became the fifth active player to reach 3,000 career hits (one of whom is Cal Clutterbuck). Since making his NHL debut in the 2009-10 season, Martin leads the NHL in hits (3,010). Martin, 31, is the only Islander to appear in every Islanders playoff game since 2013.

- For the third straight season, Mathew Barzal led the Islanders in points (60) and assists (41) last year. Barzal, 23, was the Islanders representative at each of the last two All-Star games and has appeared in every Islanders game (regular and post season) since his rookie year in 2017.

- Defenseman Andy Greene is 61 games shy of reaching the 1,000 game milestone. He currently leads all active NHL undrafted players with 939 games played.

- Defenseman Noah Dobson is the youngest player on the Islanders 23-man roster for the second straight season. He is one of just eight defensemen from the 2018 Draft class to have already made his NHL debut. He made his NHL debut and recorded his first point/assist on Oct. 8 vs. EDM. Dobson became the first NYI defenseman to record a point in his NHL debut since 2011 (M. Katic) and the first teenage defenseman to play for the Islanders since 1999 (M. Biron).

- In the 2019-20 postseason, Anthony Beauvillier became the sixth player in franchise history to open a post-season with a 6+ game point-streak. He recorded two of the Islanders three post-season series-clinching goals, becoming the second player in Islanders history to score multiple series-clinching goals in a single post-season.

- Barry Trotz is second among active coaches, trailing only Joel Quenneville, in both wins and games. Trotz's NHL record is 848-621-60-151 in 1,680 games, and he is now two wins shy of supplanting Ken Hitchcock as the 3rd-winningest coach in NHL history.
