SIA Cargo: 10 years of Corporatisation

SIA Cargo completed a decade as a separate corporate entity on July 1, with a host of celebratory activities, including an anniversary luncheon, charity fund-raisers and fun activities involving staff both in and overseas.

On 1 July 2011, SIA Cargo’s former headquarters at the SATS AFT 5 reverberated with happy chatter once again as all Singapore-based staff returned to the premises for a luncheon to mark the company’s 10th anniversary.

The nostalgic mood was heightened by the wall decorations that included a photo gallery with one section featuring snapshots from the days before Cutting the anniversary cake. The photo gallery also included a section on corporatisation showcasing the events and activities that launched the company.

SIA Cargo President Tan Kai Ping set the ball rolling with a brief address, thanking all staff for their contributions to the growth and development of the company and seeking their continued support to Staff at the photo gallery take the company to greater heights.

And then it was fun time, with most of the activities focusing on SIA Cargo and its people through the years. A quiz segment saw everyone having a great time trying to find answers to fun questions that everyone could easily relate to. And a slide show of photo montages brought up the good ‘ol days, brightening up everyone’s faces with smiles.

Keeping up spirits through the buffet lunch was a mini-lucky draw for 80 prizes. The finale was a grand draw for 30 attractive prizes, including digital cameras, a mini-stereo and ipod docking station, a pair of entry tickets to Universal Studios Singapore and shopping vouchers.

Charity events Making the anniversary celebrations more meaningful, SIA Cargo and staff also did their bit for the less fortunate, raising about $10,000 for the company’s adopted charity, Singapore Children’s Society (SCS). On 9 July, a charity movie screening was organised at the Eng Wah cinemas at Suntec City with the company footing all the costs and the proceeds from the sale of tickets going to SCS. Thirty-two students of the Henderson Student Care Centre also enjoyed the science-fiction movie with tickets donated by staff buyers. Staff also helped the SCS to raise funds by participating in their “Walk For Our Children”. Staff have been participating in this walk for the past few years, but to mark the anniversary, the company matched dollar-for-dollar the amount staff raised through pledge cards. Sharing Experience In a month-long “Share Your Experience” campaign, staff were encouraged to share their experiences in stories and pictures that were posted on a specially created anniversary site on the intranet. A poll among staff determined the 6 most popular contributions, which were rewarded with prizes of B747-400 freighter aircraft models. Many interesting stories and pictures were received from staff worldwide, creating a channel for sharing of information and experiences among staff and helped to cultivate a sense of belonging. 5 ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

10th Anniversary Celebrations At SIA Cargo New Zealand

SIA Cargo New Zealand stations held events to mark the company’s 10th anniversary. On 1 July, we presented each of our top 10 agents with 10 SIA Cargo-branded cup cakes and helium balloons to decorate their offices as a token of appreciation for their loyal support over the past 10 years. We also sent out flyers to our agents announcing the anniversary.

On 8 July, it was the turn of the staff to celebrate. Staff from Auckland and Christchurch stations and their partners let their hair down at an anniversary dinner at the new Novotel Hotel at .

SIA Cargo Incheon station celebrated the company’s 10th anniversary as well.

SIA Cargo Incheon celebrated the anniversary with a dinner party at the Best Western Hotel for airport and sales staff and handling agents.

SIA Cargo won top honors at two award ceremonies recently.

Readers of Cargo News Asia -- a leading shipping, supply chain and cargo transport publication -- named SIA Cargo “Best Air Cargo Carrier -- Asia” and “Best Green Service Provider – Airline” for the 15th and 3rd time.

SIA Cargo President Tan Kai Ping received the awards at the annual Asian Freight & Supply Chain Awards ceremony at the Shangri La Hotel on Apr 27.

Said Mr Tan: “We are proud to receive these awards on behalf of our staff who work hard to enhance the airline’s commitment to quality service, and we acknowledge the unstinting support given to us by our loyal customers in a highly competitive market.

SIA Cargo’s Service Champions Receive Honor At CEO TCS Award Night

Extraordinary achievements in the SIA world of service were celebrated at the glittering CEO TCS Award ceremony at Capella Singapore in Sentosa on 27 May. SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong presented awards to individuals and teams who displayed the “will” to delight customers with spontaneous, caring and heroic acts of service. Supervisor Auckland, Mr Simon Merrick and the New York staff received individual and team awards respectively at the CEO TCS Award ceremony.

Individual Winner - Simon Merrick, Customer Services, Supervisor Auckland

When the runway lights went out, shutting down Auckland airport one day last November, Simon — the only staff on duty then — was confronted with the prospect of two freighters stuck on ground.

He managed all aspects of the double freighter delay, safeguarding the interest of the Company and minimizing inconvenience and loss to customers. He liaised with Head Office to rearrange technical crew rosters to minimise the delays and contacted freight forwarders to advise them of alternatives for their cargo.

Mr Lee Kong Yang, Regional VP South West Pacific and South East Asia complimented Simon, “Simon Merrick rose to the occasion and not only did he handle both internal and external customers well, he even took the initiative to try to re-arrange the technical crew rosters, in liaison with head office so as to minimise overall delays. Throughout the incident, Simon’s priorities were to safeguard the interest of the Company, and to minimise inconvenience to our customers, and he went beyond his call of duty to ensure that both were achieved.” 9 CORPORATE NEWS

Cont'd Team Winner – New York Station When the New York City area was hit by a massive snowstorm on 26-27 Dec 2010, the SIA Cargo team at New York remained undaunted even though flights were grounded and most staff could not make it to the office. Despite 24 inches of snow in many areas, they were determined to deliver three critical shipments for Nippon Express which were urgently needed in Singapore. With the New York John F Kennedy International airport remaining closed on 28 Dec, prospects appeared dim, until they learnt that flights from Newark would operate that day. With some members working from home, they decided on a plan to move the shipments from JFK to Newark airport under precarious road conditions. With meticulous planning, close coordination, and a stroke of luck, the shipments made it to Newark, all in good time to be loaded on the flight despite the unforgiving weather. A fellow colleague at Los Angeles commented “ The New York team has shown outstanding dedication towards customer satisfaction. Given the difficult and challenging situation during the December snowstorm, they have gone beyond the call of duty and have once again placed our customer as the top most priority.

Team Merit - Amsterdam and Milan Stations The closure of most airports in Europe following the Icelandic volcano eruption resulted in the diversion of four freighter flights to Milan, all in a day. They were grounded the same day when the Milan airport closed as well. None in the Milan team had handled a freighter flight before, but they displayed an exceptional “will do” attitude. To lend operational support, two staff from Amsterdam drove 12 hours to Milan. Roberto Russo remained calm and coordinated the handling with Regional Office and his colleagues very well. The challenge was 2-fold: sorting out the mountain of cargo in the warehouse and handling the freighter loading and unloading. None of the staff had much experience in handling freighters and yet they were required to prepare 4 freighters within a very short time frame. Top Agents Award Presentation and Anniversary Celebration Night

Bali government representatives, appointed cargo and passenger agents were treated to dinner at the SIA Bali top agents award presentation and 25th anniversary celebration on 20 May 2011.

In his welcome note, GM Indonesia David Lau recognized top cargo and passenger agents for their support and encouraged all agents to surpass previous financial year’s sales figures. Top cargo and passenger agents were then presented with trophies for their outstanding performance in FY10/11.

As SIA Bali is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year, a surprise birthday ceremony was organized for the dinner.

In his closing address, Manager Bali Eric Eng congratulated the award winners once again and thanked all cargo and passenger agents for their continued support.

Celebration For Long Serving Tokyo And Osaka Staff On 16th June 2011, the Tokyo team held a dinner party in conjunction with SVP Sales and Marketing, Mr. Tan Tiow Kor and RVP North Asia, Mr. Walter Lien’s agents visit.

There was much to celebrate as Tokyo staff was closest to the Great East Japan Earthquake in Mar 11 and very fortunately, no staff and family suffered any injuries. We also celebrated a very deferred recognition of long service award to Mr Katagiri, Sanshiro and Mr Morimoto, Shinichi. ‘Soaring Eagles’ Descend On Top Cargo Agents

SIA Cargo Thailand organized an awards dinner for the top agents to thank them for their support.

The dinner, at the Bangkok Conrad Hotel on June 3, was also attended by Regional Vice President SEA & SWP Mr Lee Kong Yang and Senior Commercial Manager (SEA) Mr Chuang Keng Boo.

In his address, SIA General Manager Thailand Mr Eddie Leong Kok Hiung gave an overview of the station’s key milestones and cargo performance in financial year 2010-11 and thanked the agents for their unwavering support. He also spoke about the carrier’s upcoming plans and activities for the current year.

The highlight of the night was definitely the awards presentation, where the top cargo agents each received a sculpture in the shape of a soaring eagle from Mr Lee. The night also featured a lucky draw with the top prize of a three-day holiday in Singapore. – By T Chananya, Bangkok

SIA Cargo Bangalore Celebrates Mothers Day With Cargo Agents

8 May ( Sunday) was Mothers Day. We had to do something different for our freight forwarding partners’ working mothers who slog so hard both at home and at work.

So, we did something different, we went to cargo agents’ offices where there is a strong working mothers’ presence and surprised them with cakes and a special hand made ‘Mothers’ day card, drawn and worded by our Manager, Mr John Morris.

Needless to say they were touched by our gesture and one of the staff from our agents commented “On behalf of all my lady colleagues, I would like to say a “BIG THANK YOU” for making us feel very special by celebrating ‘Mother’s Day’ in our office yesterday and also for such a wonderful note describing the role of a mother in a modern day! V8s Supercars Flying High On SIA Cargo

The thrilling annual ITM400 Hamilton took place between the 15-17 of April 2011 . The 28 Supercars and the bumper crowds made sure that the New Zealand’s largest motor sports event was a success.

Fans were definitely pleased by the show that the 28 drivers have put on, but they would have been equally impressed with how much effort it took to get the entire V8 Supercars show to New Zealand’s shores.

Two SIA Cargo B747-400 Freighters were chartered to fly the Supercars and other equipment to and from the motor sports event in Hamilton. Custom made V8 Supercar double stack carracks and 747 aircraft specific containers were used to load the cars and equipment in to the aircraft. These eight double stack racks provided uplift for 16 race and safety cars on each flight. The first freighter arrived into Auckland on Monday, 11 April from Brisbane with half of the Supercars shipment, then turned around and went to Avalon to collect the remainder of the shipment to bring them to Auckland. On the following Monday, the second freighter returned some of the Supercars back to Avalon and then flew back to Auckland to transport the remainder of the cars to Brisbane. The shipments were uplifted from two different ports in Australia (Avalon and Brisbane) because the V8 Teams and V8 Headquarters are based in Queensland Gold Coast and in Melbourne.

SIA Cargo Provides Superior Service

Bangalore station handled 30tons of temperature sensitive shipment exporting from Bangalore and 13tons of import transshipment cargo competently on 29 June on a single flight.

Our team handled the time sensitive shipment exceptionally well with the support of our handling agent. The shipment was originally planned and booked for a Friday departure flight, however anticipating the space constraints of our east bound freighters on Fridays, the shipment was re-booked on our Wednesday freighter service SQ7421 to Singapore. X- Ray screening and built-up was completed just 1 hour before the arrival of the flight. The shipper was impressed with our superior service and assured that they will engage us for their shipments in the future.

On the same day on SQ7422, there were two import transshipments of 10.8 tons and 2.2 tons to Chennai and Hyderabad respectively. This shipment also had to be cleared immediately. With careful planning, and corporation from our handling agent, we transshipped both shipments smoothly.

We have strengthened our capabilities in handling temperature sensitive shipments and inbound transshipment services to other off-line and on-line points in India by providing professional service. Concert Equipment Flies On SIA Cargo

There is something special in the Indonesia’s history of music in March 2011. Santana, the legendary Latin rock-jazz fusion, was on his Asia tour and Jakarta was one of their stops. This San Francisco based band performed on 4 and 5 March 2011 in Java Jazz Festival, an annual music event in for jazz lovers.

Immediately after the performance, the event organizer and forwarder dismantled and transported all stage and musical equipments to Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Jakarta. It was past midnight when the cargo reached the warehouse. The warehouse staff had been reminded to exercise due care in the handling as the black boxes contain priceless musical equipment belonging to Mr Santana. Working non-stop through the night, the handling agent built up the 15 tons of concert equipment in order to catch the SQ953 flight which departed at 9.20am. Before the cargo was released for loading, our Duty Manager performed a final inspection to ensure that the built up was ready for carriage.
