The 27-year-old recorded the best start of his career Wednesday against Washington. Facing the team that drafted him, he permitted just one hit and one walk in seven scoreless innings. Had he remained on schedule, Meyer would have next started Wednesday in Cleveland. Because of their recent off days, the Angels do not need to replace him on their roster until Saturday in Toronto. When the Angels acquired Meyer from Minnesota on Aug. 1 last year, he was recovering from a shoulder injury that had forced him to miss most of the season.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • The Oakland Athletics Must Spend to Compete for Division Title in 2019
The Oakland Athletics Must Spend To Compete For Division Title In 2019 Author : Steven Resnick It was a magical season for the 2018 Oakland Athletics. A team that appeared destined to compete for last place in the American League West. Yet, instead became the first team to make the postseason while having the lowest payroll in Major League Baseball. Unfortunately their run didn't last long losing on the road to the New York Yankees 7-2. For Oakland to compete for the division title in 2019 ownership will need to open their wallets and spend. Early reports already indicate negotiations with designated hitter Khris Davis on a contract extension. Still its first important to figure what the roster will look like for next season. Gone likely are Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, Edwin Jackson, Jeurys Familia, Shawn Kelley and Matt Joyce. Likely to get re-signed that are free agents; Jed Lowrie and Jonathan Lucroy. 1 / 4 The Athletics do need to depart ways with shortstop Marcus Semien who had his best season defensively in 2018, yet floundered offensively. Oakland is set at the corners with Matt Chapman at third base and Matt Olson at first base. At second base a platoon of Franklin Barreto and Lowrie is an intriguing option and a free agent signing of Jose Iglesias will solidify the defense at shortstop and Chad Pinder remains the utility man. Lucroy at catcher and Josh Phegley as the backup. In the outfield is Nick Martini in left field, Ramon Laureano will man center field and Stephen Piscotty in right field.

Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings March 19, 2016 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 2014 - A Cactus League game between the Reds and Royals is abruptly stopped in the 6th inning when Reds closer Aroldis Chapman is struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Salvador Perez. Chapman is taken off the field on a stretcher, with fractures above his eye and in his nose, as well as multiple lacerations. The two managers then elect not to continue play, with the blessing of home plate umpire Chris Guccione. MLB.COM Adam Duvall, Tyler Holt bookend Reds' win By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com | @AdamMcCalvy | March 18th, 2016 + 166 COMMENTS PHOENIX -- Adam Duvall had three hits for the Reds, including a long, two-run home run, and Chris Carter hit his third homer for the Brewers as the teams battled back and forth Friday at Maryvale Baseball Park. The Reds ultimately prevailed, 7-6. Carter hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a tying triple in the fifth and Rymer Liriano lifted a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the sixth as part of a middle-inning comeback for the Brewers, who had won four of their previous five games. But the Reds quickly tied the game at 5 in the seventh inning on Jake Cave's two-out single. Duvall, a candidate for Cincinnati's left field vacancy who manned third base in this game, homered to cap the Reds' three-run first inning. Joey Votto also delivered an RBI single in the inning, but all three runs were unearned against Brewers starter Chase Anderson because of an error charged to left fielder Ryan Braun.
