The New Criterion Art April 2014 Gallery chronicle by James Panero On the “Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts” at the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, the “2014 Whitney Biennial” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, and “Volta NY” at 82 Mercer Street, New York Go see this year’s “Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts” at the American Academy of Arts and Letters.1 Then go see it again. First off, this restorative show of more than 120 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works on paper by thirty-seven contemporary artists offers an excuse to visit Audubon Terrace, one of New York’s most unexpected spaces, and one that deserves renewed attention. Located on a hillside of what was once John James Audubon’s family farm, this block west of Broadway between 155th and 156th Streets in upper Manhattan was purchased and developed as a cultural complex in the beaux-arts style by Archer Huntington, beginning in the first decades of the twentieth century. Its unusual location was perhaps a real-estate miscalculation, based on the belief that Manhattan’s center of development would continue to sweep northward, rather than skyward, as it soon proved to do through the development of the high-rise. But the relative remoteness of Audubon Terrace must now be seen as its saving grace. The pull of the skyscraper has never stretched the complex out of recognition like so many other institutions. Moreover, as the city’s peripheral places, extending in an arc from industrial Brooklyn to northern Manhattan and the Bronx, have now become new centers for living art in New York, Audubon Terrace feels like an old spirit with renewed vitality. -

Celebrating ELLIOT OFFNER Air • Land • Sea C ELEBRATING E LL IOT O FF NER Air * Land * Sea vose A DIVISION OF NEW AMERICAN REALISM VOSE GALLERIES OF BOSTON contemporary INTRODUCTION Rosemary Offner Sculpture Research and Learning Center, named for the artist and his wife of fifty years, opened at Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina, the first public sculp - ture garden in America and the site of one of the most signifi - cant collections of American realist sculpture in the country. We first met Elliot in 2003, when he participated in our Mentors and Protégée exhibition. We saw in his work the special quality that springs from intense curiosity and keen intellect. With inspiration stemming from years studying past civilizations and religions, his sculptures possess an ancient, sometimes primitive aura. While some might be tempted to call him a wildlife artist, the sculptural quality of his work—the intricate balance, the rich surface textures, the exquisite poses suggesting movement—supercedes subject matter. They are first and foremost sculptures that take form from the natural world. In preparing for this exhibition we spoke to curators, collectors and scholars who, without exception, hold Elliot Offner in the highest esteem both as an artist and, perhaps most importantly, as a human being. In his teaching capacity, he has mentored countless students as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities at Smith College. As President of the National Sculpture Society, his leadership forged a symbiotic association between the Society and the Brookgreen Sculpture Garden in South Carolina. BORICUA COLLEGE BoricuaDoors College Doors You will arrive at the intersection of 157th St. and Broadway. Make a left on Broad- way and head south to 156th St. Across the street in front of you should be Bo- ricua College. Please walk along the building’s Broadway façade until you reach a courtyard. The College resides in a building within the courtyard that was originally built for the American Geographical Society. This is why the top of the building is engraved with the names of famous explorers. HISTORY of AUDUBON TERRACE: ARCHER MILTON HUNTINGTON You are now standing within Audubon Terrace. It is a complex of eight Beaux Arts buildings from the early 20th century whose architects include some of the major stars of the period: Charles Pratt Huntington, Stanford White, and Cass Gilbert. Audubon Terrace was originally part of a farm belonging to painter and naturalist John James Audubon, who is best known for his paintings and descriptions of birds. -
