Dawn Bedford - 9th Grade and 10th Grade A-K Teresa Dailey - all 12th Grade Matt Potter-10th Grade L-Z and all 11th Grade FAILED A CLASS 1ST SEMESTER? THERE ARE 2ND CHANCES… (Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently- Henry Ford)

At the end of 1st semester there may have been a few students who failed the first half of a yearlong course. As a reminder to parents and students, there are two options to “remediate” and re-earn the credit during this school year.

2nd Chance Option

For student who failed the 1st Semester of a year long class- students can earn credit for a year long course if during the 2nd semester students:

Earn at least a “C” during the 3rd Marking Period

Earn at least a “C” during the 4th Marking Period

Earn at least a “C” on the Final Exam

Follow attendance requirements for the 2nd semester

Students who follow these criteria will have the “F” from 1st semester replaced with a “D”. Credit is awarded and the student will be back on track…

Ed Options (Night School) Students who have failed a core academic classes (English, math, science, and/or history) this year and/or in a previous year have the option to attend Ed Options. This is an Online/ Internet Night School where students MUST attend for 3 hours a week. Students and parents interested, even 9th graders, should contact their guidance counselor.

If the 1st semester of this school year was not successful, there is still plenty of time to turn it around! Best of luck with your 2nd chances… Course Registration 2010-2011 School Year

(The tragedy of life doesn’t lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goals to reach. – Benjamin Mays)

What is your career goal? What do you plan to be doing 10 years from now? What education and training will be necessary for you to realize your dreams? These are the questions you should be asking yourself as you prepare to register for next year’s classes.

During the spring semester, the registration process at Lemon Bay High School begins for the following academic year. During registration, teachers and guidance counselors can review course offering with students. Counselors will be in the classrooms and available to students to allow time for discussion. Each student will receive registration materials that include: curriculum guide, transcript summary and registra- tion worksheets. Students are encouraged to share with their parents and discuss their options.

When choosing courses and electives, long range planning is strongly encouraged. Underclassmen should anticipate their future enrollment in Advanced Placement, Dual Credit through Edison College and MCC, and the Charlotte Technical Center. Be smart, plan ahead!!!

As always, do not hesitate to call your child’s guidance counselor if you have any questions about the registration process.

All community service activities must be pre-approved by Mrs. Holleran

Not all volunteering “counts” as community service. The activity must “serve the community” at large, thus, volunteering to mow a neighbor’s lawn, for example, is not community service.

School service also counts toward total community service hours.

Community service hours may be earned by students once 8th grade has ended each year.

To earn a Silver Cord to wear at graduation, students must earn 150 hours no later than noon on the last Wednesday of their senior year.

Community Service opportunities are posted in the Career Lab at school for students to learn about and sign up for

After volunteering, a green documentation form must be completed and signed by the student, his or her parent and the community service contact person. This form is then submitted to the Career Lab to be included on a spreadsheet for each graduating class.

Students are encouraged to check the status of their hours at their convenience in the Career Lab.

When students are helping with performances of any kind in the commu- nity or for school, they may count performance hours only. Rehearsal and practice time does not count toward community service.

Many school clubs offer great opportunities for students to earn community service hours. Student are encouraged to get involved.

Lemon Bay High School Community Service—Pre-Approved Sites

As a Lemon Bay High School student, you are encouraged to begin volunteering and documenting your volunteer hours early during your freshman year. These local sites and events have been pre-approved. Other non-profit sites you may be interested in must be pre-approved before you begin community service. Community service must be documented and submitted to the Career Lab during the semester it was completed. Summer community service must be submitted no later than the end of the upcoming semester of school. Community Service Documentation forms are located outside the Career Lab for easy student ac- cess. Court-ordered community service does not count toward your high school total and may not be submitted to the Career Lab.

Charlotte County Public Schools take Academic Honesty very seriously as stated on page 39 of the District Code of Conduct where cheating is defined as: “the inappropriate and deliberate distribution or use of information, notes, materials, or work of another person, used as your own, in the completion of an academic exam, test or assignment.” Lemon Bay High School views plagiarism as one of the most serious forms of cheating. We define plagiarism as “using someone else’s words, ideas or images without giving proper credit or any credit at all to the original writer or artist.” Whether plagiarism is intentional or unintentional, it is a serious offense, and ignorance of the LBHS plagiarism policy is not an acceptable defense against the charge of plagiarism.

The penalty for cheating or plagiarism in each and every class will be:

Happy Spring Lemon Bay Family and Friends!

Can we possibly be heading toward the end of our 2009/2010 School Year?

The number one question I receive from students after taking the F.C.A.T. is: “Do we still have to read?” (*o*) I laugh and reply, “Why of course we do!”

At the beginning of the year my students and I set goals. One of them is to pass the F.C.A.T.

One other is to develop into life-long readers. I aspire for ALL my students to pass this state test; however, I also want them to acquire a love for reading. I believe these goals have been attained this year.

Thank you to parents, caregivers, colleagues, administration, and the business community for your support throughout this school year. With your backing, our success is more easily attained. We value your assistance in making reading interesting, enjoyable, and creative.

Above all, thank you to my students for making my days so fun and enjoyable. I truly appreciate each and every one of you and admire the dedication and commitment you have invested in your education. You make every day an adventure; there is never a dull moment! You are what teaching is all about!

As the summer months approach, may you find rest, relaxation, and a good book or two!

Stay cool,

Mrs. Lutz

Currently Key Club is making plans for its members to attend the annual Key Club International District Convention in Orlando in April. The club will be holding elections in February for new officers for next year. Members will also be participating in the CROP Walk in February and in the March of Dimes walk which is coming up in April.

CARE clubbers will be participating in the CROP Walk here in Englewood on February 27th to raise money and awareness for world hunger. It is a 5 mile walk in which several local churches, organizations, as well as LBHS students, participate. Twenty-five percent of the money raised in Englewood stays in our community and is donated to Englewood Helping Hand.

This has been a great year for Interact Club so far, and members hope to finish off the year strong. The group is looking forward to electing new officers for the 2010-2011 school year. Some upcoming events for March and April include:

• Spring Fling • “A” Day at Englewood Elementary • Easter egg hunt at Vineland • CROP walk

Everyone is invited to attend FCA, and you do not have to be an athlete to join. In fact, there aren’t even any dues to pay besides the task of helping us to serve the Lord with our faith and fellowship. FCA meets every Tuesday at 6:54 A.M. in Mrs. Lutz’s room (204), and breakfast is provided. See you there!

Relay for Life is a three day challenge in which competitions use the funding from sponsors to raise money to help pay for cancer research. People come together for this event all across the country, and this year Lemon Bay’s own Anime Club is no exception. Anime Club holds several events including Lip Sync, Bon Fire, “adopting” a local family in need, basic fundraising, and the biggest, Relay for Life. In 2008, the members of the Anime Club were awarded the Spirit Award for their dedication and enthusiasm. So far, Anime Club has been taking its Relay for Life preparations very seriously. Already, they’ve started selling plaques to honor those who have died as well as to the honor cancer survivors. The club is working hard on their plans for food and events they will provide. They hope to live up to the reputation established last year with an exciting theme that revolves around a classic Japanese story which is equally famous in America-Godzilla. “You get to stay up all night and eat junk food with friends. Meanwhile you’re helping a wonderful cause,” Mrs. Potter commented to her club members who might have been a little less willing. Anime Club meets every Wednesday in Mrs. Potter’s room, 203. Dues are ten dollars, which covers the club shirt and additional fees. Meetings run until 3:00 after school. Come and join us to experience Japanese culture and tradition through the art of animation. We hope to see you there!

Art Club Officers Club Sponsor– Mrs. Matonis President– Chelsey Hamsher Vice President– Ashlee Weeks

Club Dues are $10.00 Club t-shirt cost is $10.00 (optional)

Art Club meets every Tuesday in room 911 from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. The Art Club is for students who share common interest in the arts. Students who join the club should be enrolled in an art class or have taken an art class in previous years. Members need to be willing to actively participate and to consistently attend club meetings. Chain of Command: ROTC Current News/Updates
