which scored her a Jutra Award for Best Actress. 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 “I am used to playing characters that you want to protect,” admits the actor, now 23, on the phone from her Montreal home. But all of that is about to change. In Alexis Durand-Brault’s Ma fille, mon ange, which opens in Quebec on February 16 and is expected to be released in the rest of the country later this year, Vanasse shakes her good-girl image to play a young woman on the verge of becoming a cybersex star after moving out of her parents’ house. One night, her father (Michel Côté) — surfing for pornography while his wife (Dominique Leduc) is asleep — finds out that his daughter will give her first online show in a couple of days. “This whole thing scared me at first, and even now I’m still a little anxious, even if there is almost no nudity in the movie. I don’t think that people 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 expect me to play a seductress. If we had asked anyone to suggest names for the part, I’m not sure that mine would have come up,” she adds. That might explain why Vanasse prepared herself so thoroughly before arriving on set. To better understand her role, she met with several cybersex workers. “Some of these girls were younger than me, and they often came from good and caring families — just like my character in the movie. A lot of them are in search of who they are, and I realized that many of these girls only feel satisfied when other people look at them. It took me a while to digest all that.” Vanasse, who recently announced that she will co-produce and star in a movie that recounts the 1989 shootings at École Polytechnique de Montréal, says she 3-step system learned a lot from her experience, even if it wasn’t always an easy one. “I had to look at porn sites surrounded by the producers of the film — and most of them were men. I had

to question myself. I wanted to understand how other people perceived me as a 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 woman. It was very interesting, and I think that it will be quite exciting to see how people react to the movie as well.” —JEAN-FRANÇOIS LÉGARÉ

OSCARS2007 YOUR 3/C B G HOST R FOR THE EVENING… Hosting the Oscars is like surfacing from the bottom of the ocean: the pressure can kill you and the best you can hope for is survival. 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 It takes a special talent to walk out in front of an audience of Hollywood’s most powerful and glamorous players — let alone the billion or so people watching on TV — make them laugh and keep a sprawling, close-to-four-hour show on track. So when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced comedian/talk show host Ellen DeGeneres would be this year’s MC, you could almost hear the sigh of relief from Oscar fans around the world. Not only is DeGeneres funny, she’s a quick-on-her-feet wit, and goodness knows she can Get fresh. handle pressure. Remember, this was the woman who hosted the 2001 Emmy Awards, the post-9/11 awards show that was postponed twice due to concerns it would be crass to fawn over TV stars during an American crisis. Yet, in what was probably the most scrutinized appearance of her life, DeGeneres struck a note-perfect chord, addressing the nation’s mood but still firing hilarious zingers, such as: “We’re told to go on living our lives as usual, because to

do otherwise is to let the terrorists win, and really, what would upset the Taliban more than a gay 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 woman wearing a suit in front of a room full of Jews?”

IN MEMORIAM R LIKE IT WAS JUST those long-ago clips, or maybe it’s because the segment adds a respite of reality to a night that’s so puffed up. So, we’re getting a R head start on paying tribute to a few of the filmmakers who died in 2006. With apologies to the late Chris Penn, Bruno Kirby and LAST YEAR… Don Knotts, we opted to focus on three great stars who also had strong connections to the Oscars. How closely do you watch the Academy Awards? Are you one of those diehards who won’t watch with anyone else unless they sign an agreement vowing to only speak during commercials; or do you watch with half an eye while at an Oscar party sucking down cheese doodles and diet soda? MEG RYAN “You can go a long way with the nails, the hair, the breasts, the high heels, the walk, the deep voice. Men don’t realize how manipulated they can be. They are really

sitting ducks a lot of the time.” 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98

EWAN MCGREGOR “I was never very good at it, especially with Scottish women. If you try to chat them up, they cut you down. One time, I was just talking about my feelings or something, and this girl said, ‘You’re being a bit f---king deep, aren’t you?’ She was saying, ‘I know what you want. Just get on with it.’”

SALMA HAYEK 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 “I’m not telling — but there was never a man I wanted in my life I couldn’t have.”

MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY “Dancing’s good. I’ve got some unconventional moves that work for me.”

ZACH BRAFF “What works for me is being the Everyman dork who sticks his foot in his mouth. I don’t have any interest in being the cool guy.” 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 PHOTO BY CARLO ALLEGRI/GETTY
