CLUB HISTORY

Lingfield FC was formed in 1893, initially competing in the now defunct Edenbridge & District League for the first 20 years of its history. Throughout virtually all their history the club has re- tained its distinctive red and yellow colours, albeit in a variety of guises. After much success in junior and local intermediate football the club applied to join the Sussex County League (and senior football) in 1980, but were turned down after the ground was deemed inadequate. However, Lingfield had more success with the Combined Counties League, which they joined the following season (1980/81). In 1981/82 Lingfield finished as runners-up in Division Two of the Eastern Division. Lingfield installed floodlights for the first time in 1983 and they were christened with a match on 2nd March against Brighton, a game that drew a crowd of 1,200. With floodlights in place, the club was finally accepted into Division Two of the County League, with the promise of less traveling and more local derbies to look forward to. After three seasons however, they were relegated to Division Three, and intermediate football once more. In 1993/94 Lingfield returned to senior football as runners-up to Bosham, but it proved to be a brief return, with relegation following the next season. In 1997/98 however, the club was promoted once more, this time as champions of Division Three, but again struggled to maintain senior status. In 2000 they finished bottom but avoided the drop, but were not as lucky with an identical finish the following year. 2001/02 saw Lingfield close to dropping out of the League altogether after they finished bottom of Division Three, only to be saved by the merger of Ansty Rangers and St. Francis Hospital to form St. Francis Rangers. The following two seasons however, saw a steady improvement, finishing 3rd in the table (albeit 8 points behind second-placed Bexhill United) in 2004/05. The club also reached the final of the Division 3 Challenge Cup, but lost 1-3 to Rustington. In 2005/06 the Club fulfilled its promise of the previous season by going one better and returning to senior football after an absence of five years as runners-up to champions Peacehaven & Telscombe. Lingfield finished five points clear of third-placed Rustington, but the West Sussex club was once again to prove their nemesis in the Challenge Cup, beating Lingfield 12-11 on penalties af- ter the two sides had drawn 1-1 in normal time. Astonishingly, the shoot-out saw no fewer than 32 spot kicks taken! In 2006/07 the club finished in 10th position but in 2007/08 under manager Steve Perkins Jnr, se- cured promotion to Division 1 for the first time in their history by finishing as runners-up to East Grinstead Town. In their first season in Div 1 in season 2008/09 the club finished in a highly respectable 8th position, under manager Steve Perkins Jnr. In 2009-10 season Lingfield finished in 10th position in Div 1 In 2010-11 season Lingfield finished in 11th position in Div 1 In 2011-12 season Lingfield finished in 7th position in Div 1 In 2012-13 season Lingfield finished in 6th position in Div 1 In 2013-14 season Lingfield finished in 15th position in Div 1 In 2014-15 season Lingfield finished in 17th position in the SECL In 2015-16 season Lingfield finished in 8th position in Div 1 In 2016-17 season Lingfield finished in 5th position in Div 1 In 2017-18 season Lingfield finished in 3rd position in Div 1 and promoted to the Prem Division

CLEMS SORNER

Lingfield 2-2 Pagham

Honours even at The Lair as both sides hold onto their respective unbeaten records.

Lingers not been beaten at The Lair since April 2017; Pagham unbeaten in the league after 10 games. Something to budge?...

A third consecutive start for Joel Alexander up top after his 2 goals in as many games. Olly Moore retained his spot in goal after an accomplished clean sheet. So an unchanged side from that which beat Hassocks 3-0 last weekend.

First half then, and Pagham engaged us high. Don’t know whether it was worked out through our video coverage or a usual move from them. However, it did make it difficult to play out; instantly setting their intentions for the game. With this, it allowed them to retain better possession and look more threatening whilst Alexander and anyone joining in did pose a danger on the counter. Lots of half chances more than anything for both sides throughout the half. The key mo- ments of the half came 5 minutes from time; Bakhit got his overlap around Alexander and into the box and as he attempt- ed his cross, was clearly brought down late to no advantage. Nothing given. Pagham went up the other end with Overton creating a mazey run into the box, between Fuller and Heaton and brought down, this time given. As close as Moore got, Overton converted it himself into the bottom left. 0-1; and that was the half tied up.

Yes, 1-0 down. Yes, they haven’t been beaten at this stage; but for us, never felt out of the game. A penalty the difference, and could’ve been very different if decisions had been. Pagham almost doubled the lead however minutes into the re- start, which MoM Josh Fuller denied with a worldie last ditch tackle as the goal was gaping! We definitely were able to retain the ball better, and push Pagham back with a little more authority and began to press them as high as they were us in the first period. We got the equaliser just after the hour mark; keeper indecisive when playing out, played basically straight to me, and I lifted it over him as he struggled to recover; 1-1. Didn’t last long was an understatement! From kick off, a move down the left so Hodge decide we’d been level long enough, and gifted their winger a chance to round Moore and was tapped home by Overton for his 2nd. On video evidence, the ball was played forward when beyond all Lingfield players, but was still given. 10 minutes later, it was Pagham who felt aggrieved as a deep free kick was hit into the back of my head and back over into the path of Connolly who chipped the keeper on the angle and into the top corner for a quality delicate finish; 2-2. Again upon video evidence, I looked closer than 10 yards. Seemed to level itself over the course of the game I suppose. The very last chance fell to the Lingers; Joe Kavangh at the back stock from a Heaton free kick deflected to the back post and Kavangh pulled his effort from 3 yards. A real gutter! 2-2 it finished.

Across the 90 neither team deserved to lose, but both sides will feel they could’ve won it. So we uphold our record at The Lair for another week whilst they remain unbeaten in the league through 11 now. Credit to the character of all the players who dug in and showed some good fitness levels late on. And a big good luck to all Pagham FC in their quest for promo- tion; a good outfit they are. And to their travelling support who stuck around after to enjoy the evenings entertainment. We look forward to doing the same in the return trip.

Midweek football is back Tuesday! At The Lair, in the Surrey Cup, v Horley Town Res. A side we played last year in the same competition. They’ll be an unknown quantity this year however.

A big thank you to Mike Moore who provided yet another week of pre match coverage of Sky Sports, running our media system throughout the game and providing highlights and stats afterwards which can be found on DE Photo TV. A quality production!

We hope to see you all again very soon!

History Horley Football Club was first affiliated to Surrey County FA in 1896. In 1903 another local club by the name of Gatwick Rovers was formed and the two clubs merged in 1908 with Horley retaining its name. Both these original clubs played in the same colours of red & black and it was not until 1912 that Horley adopted the colours of claret & blue that they still wear to this very day. Intermediate football was tasted for the first time in season 1925/26 following an appearance in the Surrey County Junior Cup Final in 1923/24 and winning the Surrey County Junior Charity Cup in 1924/25.Following the Second World War, Horley was faced with the prospect of losing its home at The Kings Head ground and set about finding a new home. A local landowner by the name of Major A.L.N. Jennings became the Club’s benefactor (and President) following his generous decision to give the club 10.7 acres of land in Smallfield Road. The land was held in trust for the people of Horley from 1947, in memory of those that died in the defence of their country, and the ground was appropriately named The Defence.

Season 1950/51 saw Horley win the Surrey Intermediate League Eastern Section and seek election to the Surrey Senior League for season 1951/52. This excursion into Senior football was short lived as the Club found themselves back in Junior football by season 1954/55. Intermediate status was regained in 1956/57 season and in season 1957/58 they entered their first ever Youth team in the local Redhill & District League.

With the expansion of the village of Horley to a town the Club changed its name in 1974 to become Horley Town F.C. During this spell in senior football, Horley Town enjoyed their most successful period culminating in the winning of the Surrey Senior League title and Surrey Senior League Challenge Cup in 1976/77. The Club also reached the final of the Surrey Senior League Charity Cup in this season.

The club went on to compete in the London Spartan League and the Athenian League before returning to the Combined Counties League (formerly the Surrey Senior League).

The early 1980’s saw the Club expand their interest in Youth football with the creation of Horley Town Minors. This relationship has grown over the years and is the reason why the Club has evolved into a well respected community club providing football for the people of Horley irrespective of age, sex or race.

In September 2003, Horley Town moved to their new ground, named The New Defence in deference to their old home, behind the New Leisure Centre.

The Club has been in the Combined Counties League Premier Division since 2006 and, in addition to its Reserves and Youth teams, incorporates numerous successful junior football teams at all age levels.

In 2009/10 the Club welcomed Horley Rugby Club and The New Defence Sports Club with its excellent facilities can now offer both sports to local enthusiasts on a regular basis.

2011/12 saw Horley Town FC finish in the top half of the League under the management of Ali Rennie and Mark Lay also seeing some good results in the FA Cup rounds.

2012/13 was Rennie's last season in charge and Reserves boss Trevor Smith was appointed as his successor for season 2013/14. However results didnt go their way, despite showing some early promise in the FA Cup. At the end of November, the club and Trevor agreed an amicable parting of the ways and Youth Team Manager and club stalwart Anthony Jupp agreed to take on the role at least temporarily.

TERRACE TRAVLLER

League Two Lincoln City 1 (Tom Pett) Crewe Alexandra 0 Attendance: 8,718 Sincil Bank A whole week has passed since my last game! It has been a quiet week, due to the fact that I have been under the weather and didn’t fancy standing out in the cold. I was also aware that I had to drive north this weekend and I wanted to feel better to celebrate my dad’s birthday. Dad and I have done countless Crewe Alexandra away days, so it was only fitting that we did one for his birthday. I was able to get free tickets (thanks to my good pal and Lincoln midfielder Michael O’Connor) and dad paid for the supporter’s bus (maybe I should have paid for that… whoops!). I was also O’Connor’s birthday. Since starting his career at Crewe, I have kept in touch and seen him play at all of his subsequent clubs, Scunthorpe United, Rotherham United, Port Vale and Notts County*. *I went to county twice last season, but he was injured so technically I never saw him play for the Magpies but did go to visit on two occasions. So off we went for our first Crewe game of the season, or second if you include a pre-season friendly up at Altrincham in July. The bus left around 10:30 and due to some roadworks and closures we went straight to the ground, arriving just before 2pm. The bus was less than half full and despite the player’s coach leaving directly behind us at the carpark, they somehow beat us to the ground! The bus had all the usual faces. Dad has used the bus far more than I have in the past five years or so, but it is always a nice atmosphere, everyone talking football and anticipating what may meet us at our end destination. Crewe this season have been far from impressive. In the league David Artell’s men have picked up zero points on the road and scored just once away from home. Lincoln, on the other hand, are riding high at the top of the league so the result reflected the league standings. Crewe, with the exception of one game, haven’t lost by more than one goal on the road so their hard-to-beat defence was nearly good enough again against Lincoln. The Game Lincoln continued their reign at the top of League Two with a narrow 1-0 win over bottom-half Crewe Alexandra. Tom Pett scored within a minute of coming on in the second half and the Imps were able to hold on despite Ben Garratt saving Lee Frecklington’s penalty with six minutes remaining. It was a tough afternoon for both sides and fortune usually favour the in-form team and it was no different today with the Imps as picked up their ninth win of the season. The first half saw much of the ball bogged down in the midfield and there was little to separate the two sides. Lincoln were pressing and probing throughout and a cross from Neal Eardley had to be dealt with at the back post by Corey Whelan who headed out for a corner. Ben Garratt made the save of the game to deny Harry Anderson from point-blank range, saving an almost impossible save. Former Railwayman and Northern Ireland international Michael O’Connor had delivered a decent free kick into the box and as Chris Porter inadvertently headed towards his own goal, Garratt scrambled across the goal line to block out Anderson. Lincoln managed to break the deadlock just before the hour mark. Former Stevenage midfielder Pett had been on a matter of minutes when his volley squirmed out of the grasp of Garratt and over the line. Lincoln’s first cross had been blocked at the near post by George Ray with the ball looping up in the air. John Akinde then beat to the first header, before Frecklington outjumped James Jones and the ball sat up for Pett to volley into the bottom corner. Crewe pressed for an equaliser but couldn’t add to the their one away goal this season, despite Whelan going close with a shot from 25-yards that Josh Vickers did well to palm away. At the other end, Garratt was back to spectacular saves when he was at full stretch to deny Bruno Andrade from distance. The hosts were getting closer to a second and they were given a helping hand when Andrade got the better of Kevin O’Connor who tangled with the Imps wide man just inside the area and referee pointed straight to the spot. However, Frecklington’s well-placed penalty was matched by Garratt who guessed the right way and managed to hold on to the ball. Buoyed by the lifeline of the penalty saved, Crewe went close to pulling off an unlikely draw as George Ray saw his header blocked. The Imps were holding on and Vickers had to punch clear only to save the rebounded shot by Whelan before the ball was eventually scrambled clear.
