It was an encouraging performance for a player who was limited by injuries last year and who was on the inactive list for six weeks thanks to a groin problem. "I see a more confident player,'' Singletary told the San Jose Mercury News. "I see a player that really is beginning to understand what we're trying to do on the backend, all of the little detailed things. "The word 'detail' comes up a lot and that's the thing that we're stressing. We have to know what exactly we're doing; we have to know exactly what the calls are, exactly who we're working with. We can't be guessing.'' San Francisco will continue to start Dashon Goldson at free safety, but now the 49ers have some confidence they have a backup who's ready if needed.
