It has been a wonderful year and I’m very proud you have chosen to dance with us. I sincerely hope to see each and every one of you back next year for another great season. We are very excited to present to you our 18th Annual Recital on May 17th! You won’t want to miss the show!

**TICKETS Tickets will remain on sale at the studio until Wednesday May 14th. If there are tickets left they will be available at the door the day of the show. The cost at the door will be $11 for the petite show and $13 for the grande shows.

**MAY TUITION AND ANY OUTSTANDING FEES ARE NOW PAST DUE. PLEASE NOTE ONLY CASH AND CREDIT CARDS WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR PAYMENT NOW.

**IMPORTANT - DRESS REHEARSAL INFORMATION! Parents only should be attending dress rehearsal. This is for the dancers to become familiar with the stage, and for the PAC technical crew and lighting designers to adjust and fine tune lights, sound, props, and music. Some may work, and some may be totally different for the show! It is not the polished performance that will be seen at the recitals. However, each year, the number of spectators at the rehearsals grows. We are doing the same as last year and have a closed rehearsal, to encourage friends and family to attend the performances on Saturday. If you have a dancer(s) in the grande or petite rehearsal, we have attached 2 rehearsal passes to this newsletter. If you have a dancer(s) in both performances, we have attached 4 passes. These are to be used preferably by mom, dad or guardians of the dancer. Anyone who does not have a pass, other than dancers required to be at that rehearsal, will be charged $5.00 to watch the dress rehearsal.

**DVD ORDER FORMS See your April newsletter for a DVD order form or pick one up at the front desk! Please remember we have our shows professionally video taped for you. Video cameras will not be permitted in the recitals. You may video tape the dress rehearsal; however all video cameras must be battery operated. You may choose to have the dvd(s) shipped directly to you for an extra charge of $6.00. If you do not have it shipped to you it will be available at the studio. Dvd’s to be picked up at the studio will be available after June 24. The studio will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays or you can pick up at our Open House on Aug. 5. Orders will be accepted at the studio until May 14th.

Since 1996, Kim Hohman’s Danceworks has provided students with an exciting performance experience through its May recital. The recital is a very important part of the dance season. It’s a chance to shine in front of family and friends that the students anticipate with nervous excitement. The recital offers our students a professionally directed performance that allows them to present to their families and friends the results of a year’s hard work, dedication, and progress.

A big part of the dance training process includes learning through performance. The experience helps build self-esteem, self-assurance, and contributes to a sense of confidence. Although performance opportunities can help prepare some students for a possible career in dance, they also contribute to children’s success in non-dance activities. Participating in onstage experience can result in better in-school presentations, improved social skills, and strong interview skills for future college or job opportunities. The rehearsal process is a tremendous learning experience as well. It helps the children develop retention skills, and by working with their classmates on a group performance, they learn the positive aspects of working as a team to create the best end result.

All dancers should be in pink ballet, black jazz or tennis shoes. If you do not have the required attire, you will not be allowed to participate in the finale.

GRANDE DRESS REHEARSAL & RECITAL: Dress Rehearsal: Friday, May 16, 6:00 p.m. Please be there by 5:45 p.m. We will be rehearsing the finale first for the Grande Performance, that way you are free to go when your numbers are finished.

Receiving a Trophy? If your dancer is receiving a trophy they will be receiving this first thing in the 7:00 recital, in their first costume. Please be backstage 15 minutes before show time so we can get the dancers lined up in order. We should not have to come looking for you.

The finale: Girls will wear their recital t-shirt and any pink, teal, silver or black bottoms. Boys will wear their recital t-shirt and blue jeans. Please wear black jazz or hip hop shoes. Tennis shoes are fine if you do not have the other. If you do not have the required attire, you will not be allowed to participate in the finale.

INFORMATION PERTAINING TO BOTH REHEARSALS & RECITALS

REHEARSALS & RECITALS will be held at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center!

ALL TUITION and any outstanding fees MUST BE PAID IN FULL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE RECITAL, PLEASE DO NOT BRING PAYMENTS TO DRESS REHEARSAL. CHECK WITH FRONT DESK IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS.

**IMPORTANT - DRESS REHEARSAL INFORMATION! Dress rehearsals are meant for the dancers to become familiar with the stage, and to adjust and fine tune lights, sound, props, and music. It is not the polished performance that will be seen at the recitals. However, each year, the number of spectators at the rehearsals grows. To encourage friends and family to attend the performances on Saturday, we have attached two rehearsal passes to this newsletter, 4 tickets if you have a dancer(s) in both performances. These are to be used preferably by mom and dad or guardians of the dancer. Anyone who does not have a pass will be charged $5.00 to watch the dress rehearsal.

ETIQUETTE

Dressing Room Students must respect other students’ space and property in the dressing rooms. The students will spend more time in the dressing rooms than onstage or in the auditorium, so please do your best to keep the room organized and clean. Approved Snacks: Energy bars, apples, bananas, carrot sticks, string cheese, etc. No juice, pop etc. allowed. Bottled water is permitted in dressing rooms.

The public restrooms at the Performing Arts Center are not to be used as dressing rooms.

Audience Please silence all cellular phones and pagers. Please remain in your seats during the entire performance. If you do need to leave your seat, please do so between numbers.

No food or drinks are allowed in the Auditorium at any time.

It has been brought to my attention that last year people were parking in the grass!! Please stay in the parking lots, if the closer lots fill up, there is more parking back by the school entrances.

Hair, makeup, and costumes LABEL, LABEL, LABEL! Parents, I cannot stress enough, how important it is to have all of your child’s belongings marked with their names. All costumes, accessories, shoes, and finale shirts, everything should be marked! If your name is not in it, we have no idea who it belongs to. We are not responsible for any lost items. For the petite performance, we have found that if you bring a paper sack with your dancer’s name, it is very helpful to put their belongings in it, with the quick costume changes. Students must bring all costumes to both the dress rehearsal and the recital.

HAIR To keep our recital on a professional level – all hair must be pulled or pinned away from the face. makeup All students must arrive in full make-up, blush, lipstick, and coordinating eye shadow at the rehearsal and recital. The stage lights are very bright and we want to be able to see the facial expressions and features of the dancers so please apply stage make-up.

COSTUMES All dancers are required to have on the appropriate at rehearsal and recital. Petite dancers, please layer tights for a quick costume change. NO PANTIES are to be worn under costumes at the rehearsal or recital because they can be seen through the costumes with the stage lighting. Tap and Clog shoes may only be worn just before, during, and just after performance. Dancers must not roam the facility in tap or clog shoes. There is to be NO RUNNING at any time.

There will be a box in the backstage area for items found during dress rehearsal. Last year, two boxes of items were taken back to the studio after the recital. Please make sure you take all of your belongings home with you after the recital! Please check the area around you when you leave.

DRESS REHEARSAL!! WHAT TO WEAR AND WHERE TO GO Dancers will be grouped by their different classes in the dressing rooms, and I will have the groups listed by their dances outside of the dressing room they should be in. They will be in the same location on Saturday. We will also go over these in class, dancers should know where they are going.

For the PETITE PERFORMANCE, be ready in your first costume when you arrive. When you arrive there will be staff directing you where to go.

For the GRANDE PERFORMANCE, we will do the finale first. After that we will start with the beginning of the 7:00 show, which is the line-up for the dance trophies. Then we will start with the first number and go all the way through. If you are in one of the first four numbers in the show come in costume, so you won’t need time to change after we rehearse the finale. If you are not in one of the first four numbers, come dressed in finale attire. GRANDE PERFORMANCE students will be permitted to sit in an assigned area in the auditorium with their group and watch the other dancers, if time permits. However, you must be in your assigned area six numbers before your number, to prepare to go on stage. When you or your dancer has completed their final number they may leave. I have attached a copy of the line-up (please keep this on hand for the dress rehearsal).

Things to bring to recital Suggestions from parents who have done this before • Baby Powder (for itchy costumes) • Baby Wipes/Shout Wipes (to fix make-up mistakes or wash hands) • Safety Pins (for emergency costume repairs) • Clear Nail Polish (to repair minor mistakes or runs in tights) • Band-Aids (the invisible kind) • Make-up Remover • Q-tips • Hair Gel • Bobby Pins • Hairspray • Extra Pair Tights • Nail polish Remover • Pain Reliever of Choice • Extra Diaper/Pull up (Tiny Tots)

BACKSTAGE Family members and friends do not belong backstage or in the dressing rooms during recital unless they have been assigned as backstage help. If you are not going to help the dancer during the recital, please do not help during dress rehearsal. Also, if you are helping backstage you should be helping all of the students, not just your own. We will have security at the doors for your child’s safety. If you are not helping backstage, you should not be going back there during the performances.

Classroom assistants and parent volunteers will be assigned different rooms, to help backstage. Please remember these are volunteers, and be appreciative and considerate. Parents who are helping backstage at any of the performances need to be backstage the night of dress rehearsal to become familiar with everything and everyone.

There is a lot of backstage activity in a limited space. Dressing Rooms are a private area. Please remind family and guests to be respectful of these areas. Those who wish to greet a performer after the show or present flowers should do so in the lobby areas.

RECITAL REMAIN IN DRESSING ROOM All students need to be backstage in the appropriate dressing room. Dancers are not permitted in the auditorium. The show will go on so you need to be where you are supposed to be.

After the finale Petite performance We will be rehearsing the petite show exactly as it will be on Saturday. After the finale, in both the rehearsal and the recital, the dancers will be taken to their dressing room for you to pick them up. To avoid confusion, and to keep the hallways from being overcrowded, we ask that only one parent pick up their dancer from their dressing room, and that you wait until all dancers have gone to their dressing rooms.

Video and Photography Dress Rehearsal Flash pictures and video cameras are permitted at the rehearsals only!

Recital Absolutely no flash photography will be permitted during the show (You may take pictures while trophies are being passed out )D. Please note; no video taping will be allowed in the auditorium during the recital. Kim Hohman’s DanceWorks will have a professional videographer at the recital. Families may place an order for a DVD before or after the recital. Disclaimer: By participating in Kim Hohman’s DanceWorks’ recital, dancers release the right to Kim Hohman’s DanceWorks to have a professional videographer at the recital. Parents also release the right to Kim Hohman’s DanceWorks to use any dance photographs, taken by Kim Hohman’s DanceWorks for use in the dance studio, on our website or any other form of advertisement/communication.

Final Note KHDW realizes this is a lot of information. If you have any questions regarding any of the information listed, please call, email or come talk to me or any office staff. We are greatly anticipating this year’s recital experience and appreciate your help and dedication in making the show the best one yet!

Sincerely, Kim 419-232-6505 [email protected] HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!!!!
