Hopefully, Northwest Ohio will have a mild winter! However, knowing the area of the country we live in, we won’t likely see a winter with no snow or ice. In the event transportation is cancelled due to weather, you will receive a phone call from a member of our team. It would be a good idea before you have an urgent need to line up someone to clear your walks and plow your driveway if you are unable to do the work yourself. If we are unable to safely enter your drive or use the sidewalk to your door, transportation may be cancelled. If you have questions about the weather or wish to reschedule an appointment due to weather conditions, please call Dennis in Defiance at 419.782.3233 or Linda in Hicksville at 419.542.5004. Reminder, if you are currently served by the home delivered meal program and we are not able to deliver, you will receive a phone call in advance of your usual drop off time. If we don’t receive an answer, we will ask you to call us back or we may make call your emergency contact. Again, we ask you to make arrangements for your driveway and sidewalk to be cleared for the safety of the drivers. Please know that we make every effort to arrange alternate transportation for those clients receiving chemotherapy and dialysis treatments. Be safe and be smart about the weather!

BE POLITE BUT ASK THAT EVERYONE WEAR A MASK WHO IS IN CONTACT WITH YOU. Do you have home health aides, delivery persons, family members, etc. coming to your home? It’s a good idea to politely ask everyone to wear a mask, sanitize their hands, and keep a six foot distance from you. Public health experts say masks, in particular, are key to reducing the spread of COVID-19 and the flu virus. If you do find yourself interacting with someone who is not wearing a mask, don’t put them on the defensive. You might want to say something like, “For your safety and mine, I would feel much more comfortable if we were both wearing masks.” The Worth of Seniors A letter to my best friend, Remember old folks are worth a fortune with silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys, lead in their feet and gas in their stomachs. I have become a little older since the last time I saw you and a few changes have come into my life. Frankly, I have become a frivolous old gal. I am seeing 5 gentleman every day! As soon as I wake up, Will Power helps me get out of bed. Then I go see John. Next Charlie Horse comes along and when he is here, he takes a lot of my time and attention. When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He does not like to stay in one place very long, so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day, I’m really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Guay. What a life! Oh yes, I am flirting with Al Zymer. P.S. The preacher came to call the other day. He said, that at my age I should be thinking of the hereafter. I told him, “I do, all of the time.” No matter where I a m, in the parlor, upstairs, in the kitchen or down in the basement, I ask myself ~ ~ ~ “Now, what am I here after?”

Ideas for holiday gift giving for YOUR senior

Don’t know what put under the tree for your senior for the holidays or birthday? Here are some simple, appreciated ideas that are true winners:  Create a “job or wish jar”. Weekly pick Let the senior pick a job to make their life a little easier and perhaps less worrisome. Items could include lawn work, housekeeping and laundry, cleaning the gutters, auto maintenance and cleaning, clearing out unwanted items for donation, decorating for the holidays, snow and ice removal, commodity pick-up or grocery shopping, prescription pick-up, picking up a take-out meal or cooking a meal at home, going for a ride in the county, organizing a closet or pantry.

Not only will your senior appreciate the help but their primary caregiver could likely use a hand as well. These tasks are simple for most of us and don’t involve a lot, if any, money. If you would like to give a gift, here are some other suggestions to consider:  Winter sweater or bathrobe. (Everyone needs a replacement from time to time);  Gift cards for grocery ordering online;  Gift cards for prescription copays or over the counter medications;  Insulated water bottle or a case of bottled water – whatever option is best for your loved one;  Subscription to favorite newspaper or magazine;  Cell or cable TV paid for year;  New or updated family pictures;  Create a “goodie” basket with your senior’s favorite diet-friendly snacks or non-perishable food items;  Donate money to a favorite charity or make a donation for your loved ones home-delivered meals.
