BEDE'S NEWS 16 September 2016 Tel: 0161 226 3323 www.sbcm.co.uk A Message From Dr Robson

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We were delighted to fill the Academic Hall last night with Upper Third pupils and their families. This was a particularly special and uplifting Mass and we would like to thank Fr. Michael Deas (Old Bedian), only ordained nine weeks ago, for leading our celebration. The new Upper Third pupils continued with their Induction programme today, bonding as a year group and working hard to produce a ‘play in a day’ performed this afternoon. Well done to all involved!

Our aspirational Lower Sixth pupils visited Oxford University today to experience what life is like at this world class university in readiness for their applications next year. The Lower Sixth students continue their Induction programme working with the Ten Ten theatre company next Tuesday.

Last night we welcomed our new Upper Third pupils and parents to the College for a wonderful, celebratory welcome Mass.

With nearly 100 Upper Thirds together with their parents the Academic Hall was full to capacity on what proved to be one of the warmest evenings of the year. However, the pupils were in fine voice and the mass was a happy and joyful occasion to start their journey through the College.

This was a very special occasion as Mass was celebrated by our very own Bedian Father Deas. He too joined the College in the Upper Third and is the first Bedian in sixteen years to be ordained into the Diocese of Salford.

Deserved thanks must go to Mrs Vyce, Head of Lower Seniors, Mr Davies, Subject leader of music and Mrs Hibbert our new Chaplain for organising this happy event.

University Challenge

The Senior Master Mr Peden and Assistant Head of Sixth Form, Mrs Lockett, have led a trip to Oxford University today for a number of our Upper Fifth and Lower Sixth Pupils.

This is a ‘pre-open’ Day for those pupils who have demonstrated the potential and interest in studying at an Oxford College.

Mr Peden, himself an Alum of Brasenose College is well placed to advise the students on their choices of college.

Before setting off he said “The College has a great history of sending pupils to Oxford and I am very pleased to have this opportunity to work with potential Oxford candidates. This fact finding trip is part of our wider College UCAS preparation programme where we prepare our students for university.”

Outward Bound Our Lower Sixth set off bright and early this morning, bound for the YMCA, Lakeside Activity Centre, Ulverston up in the Lake District.

Ahead of them lay a day of challenges as they tackled high ropes, aerial assault courses, obstacle courses, canoeing and kayaking.

The purpose of the trip is to allow them to forge greater friendships, develop their confidence and show leadership skills in a demanding and challenging environment, whilst of course having fun.

Transferable skills which will be of great use during their sixth form years. THE BEDIAN ASSOCIATION 16 September 2016 Tel: 0161 226 3323 www.sbcm.co.uk The Bedian Association Dear Parents, Teachers and Friends,

Alchemy As Steele Turns To Bronze

Can you imagine being awarded an Olympic medal eight years after you actually competed?

For Bedian Andrew Steele this happened to him yesterday.

He and his British 4×400 relay team-mates , Rob Tobin and , competed in the 2008 Olympics only to be beaten by the Russian quartet.

However, as part of a number of doping disqualifications affecting the Russian Olympic team, athlete was disqualified as part of an IOC ruling. This was significant as Alekseyev was part of the bronze-medal-winning 4×400 Russian relay team. As a result the whole team was disqualified and the third place was awarded to Andrew and his team mates, giving them the much deserved and long overdue bronze medals. Stepping Out in Style

Not only have we started a new term, at times it has felt like a brand new beginning with a large number of our pupils returning in the new College uniform.

Many parents commented on the smartness of the uniform at the Welcome Mass last night and the dramatic difference it has brought to the College cohort.

Contenders Ready... Whilst some of us have been enjoying the long summer holidays, four staff members have been pounding the streets in preparation for the X-Runner, Wild Warrior Run in Derbyshire on 1 October.

Mr Tracey (School Catering Manager) is raising money for Millie’s Trust the nominated charity of Holroyd-Howe, who are the school caterers.

Mrs Taylor, the School nurse is running on behalf of Myotonic Dystrophy, as her husband was recently diagnosed with this. She has been joined in her fundraising endeavours by Mrs Hatton and Mrs Girolami. Mrs Taylor said “ I am keen to raise awareness of this condition but I am incredibly grateful and feel really emotional that my colleagues have been willing to join me in this challenge.”

We wish all four every success in the mud! For further details please contact [email protected] BEDE'S NEWS PREP SCHOOL Tel: 0161 226 3323 www.sbcm.co.uk Something For Everyone

Former Bedian and cubing fanatic Chris Harrison visited the Prep School to give the latest generation of Rubik’s Cubers a talk on cubing. Chris, now a classics student at Birmingham University, used to run a Rubik’s Cube Club in the College and he has his own channel on YouTube dedicated to cubing.

Chris showed the pupils many of his different types of puzzle, ranging from a small 2x2 cube to a seven-layered dodecahedron. He explained how each puzzle works and how long the solves usually take. Chris also talked about competing in national cubing competitions - he is the third fastest in the U.K. at solving the Rubik’s Magic puzzle.

The highlight of the session for the pupils was watching Chris solve cubes of many different shapes and sizes that they had brought into school - usually in under twenty seconds! The pupils were mesmerised by Chris’s moves and found the session ‘awesome’, ‘amazing’ and ‘so cool’.

Chris’s cubing videos can be found on his YouTube channel, haribo41296 (https://www.youtube.com/haribo41296).
