ADVISORY/Nun Who Took Vow of Poverty Wins $10,000 from U.S. Bank and WLW When Reds Hit Back-To-Back Home Runs ADVISORY/Nun Who Took Vow of Poverty Wins $10,000 from U.S. Bank and WLW When Reds Hit Back-to-Back Home Runs June 30, 2004 CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2004--When the Reds are playing, there's a good chance you'll find Sister Susanna Helms tuning into WLW to hear it on her little transistor radio. She and two other Sisters were listening to the Reds/Marlins game on May 31, when Sister Susanna's name was called out as the Reds fan who would win $10,000 from U.S. Bank if the Reds hit back-to-back home runs. Barry Larkin and Sean Casey obliged, helping to win both the game and $10,000 for the Sisters of Saint Francis in Oldenberg, Indiana. As Sister Susanna took a vow of poverty, the money will go to the Sisters of Saint Francis to help it meet expenses. Sister Susanna will receive her check for her Order on Wednesday, June 30 from Leigh Kem, U.S. Bank district manager during check presentation ceremonies at the Great American Ball Park. She will also have a chance to talk with Reds play-by-play announcers Marty and Joe, and cheer the team on as they play the Mets that night. Entry forms can be filled out by visitors at any of the participating U.S. Bank offices to enter the U.S. Bank / WLW Back-2-Back Cash Back promotion. During the Reds broadcast on WLW, listen to Marty Brennaman and Joe Nuxhall on WLW for your name to be announced at the beginning of the fifth inning. And, if the Cincinnati Reds hit back to back home runs in the fifth inning, that lucky contestant is $10,000 richer! • ENERGY STAR Success Story: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds
ENERGY STAR Success Story: Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati Reds Located on the winding banks of the Ohio River in downtown Cincinnati, the Great American Ball Park is home to the Cincinnati Reds, baseball's first professional franchise. The ballpark, built next door to the Reds’ former home, Riverfront Stadium, officially opened for the 2003 season. Equally as enthusiastic as their hometown fans, the ballpark’s management team continues to improve the ballpark’s energy performance and is a leader among stadiums nationwide. Energy Management with ENERGY STAR The Cincinnati Reds were one of the first Major League Baseball teams to join ENERGY STAR as a partner in 2008 and use ENERGY STAR resources to track energy usage, improve energy performance, and communicate their efforts to staff and the public. Improving energy performance is an important environmental strategy for the Reds and they have received kudos from local officials and enhanced loyalty from fans for leading by example. The ballpark operations management team benchmarks the ballpark’s energy performance using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Portfolio Manager, an online energy tool to track whole-building energy intensity and greenhouse gas emissions. By inputting historical energy data going back to 2007, and ongoing monthly energy consumption and cost information, the Reds are able to measure progress and quantify improvements. To date, the ballpark’s energy intensity is 27 percent better than the national average for entertainment buildings1, even with an off-season construction project during the winter of 2009. As part of their energy management plan, the ballpark’s building operations management team implemented several energy conservation measures and integrated energy efficient technologies into the ballpark’s infrastructure.

Let's get the season started in style by running down an interesting Statcast™ stat for each team -- in many cases, something that never could have been measured prior to 2015. AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST Blue Jays: 1.07 seconds: Ryan Goins' baseball-leading exchange time, which is a way to measure the time that elapses between a fielder receiving the ball and releasing the throw. What that means is that no infielder in the game managed to get rid of the ball as quickly as Goins did, which makes sense given his stellar defensive reputation. Orioles: 82.2 mph: Darren O'Day's average exit velocity against on four-seam fastballs, the second lowest among 407 pitchers who threw at least 100 of them. Despite averaging just 88 mph on his otherwise unimposing fastball, O'Day's swing-and-miss rate of 36.8 percent was better than every pitcher other than Aroldis Chapman, and the hitters that did make contact against O'Day's funky sidearm delivery failed to make good contact, leading to a .097 average against it.

Our subject born in Cincy to Charlotte and Powel Crosley, an attorney. Educated locally, at College Hill then to Ohio Military Institute upon graduating in 1905. Attending U of Cincinnati, being obsessed with mechanics of automobiles. The mass production of autos employed by Henry Ford caught his attention and implemented by his brother, Lewis, when the two began manufacturing quality affordable radios in 1921. Crosley an industrialist repeatedly played “Song of India” phonograph record over 8CR, his experimental 20 watt station at his College Hill home. He asked anyone who heard his broadcast to mail (QSL) a postcard and heard from people as far away as Troy, Ohio. In 1921 Local auto parts producer Powel Crosley, moves his ham radio station 8CR transmitter from his home to the factory location and has same licensed under the letters WLW. - Crosley will organize his radio Corporation in 1923 and the station becomes the Voice of the Midwest’s pork and corn belt. He was issued W8GM in 1934. Unfortunately, many people have never heard of Crosley, he developed many inventions that have changed our lives today. We haven’t mentioned the Crosley Family influence and far reaching roll they played in WW II War effort, also the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, Crosley Field and Crosley appliances and the automobile, over 30 MPG. It’s all there on Wikipedia.com give it a look. Below we post the winter home Powel built for his wife Gwendolyn in 1929 on a 63 acre Florida parcel called Seagate, a Sarasota Bay retreat.
