A s/Jecia l pictorial retJort of the least /Jublished views of the widdy publicized Brussel's World's Fa Five miles from the center of Brussels, the Belgian GO\·ernment is pl ay ing host to the world with its World's Fair, the Brussels Universal and Internati onal Exposition. An es timated 35 million visitors are expected to walk, ride the Swiss loaned aerial tramway , or be propell ed in mechanical wicker chairs over at least a portion of the 500 acre fairgrounds before the exhibition closes in mid-October. Unquestionably one of the finest and mo.•t elegant buildi.ngs of the Fair, the pnvilion of the United States draws large crowds to its 360 degree exhibit. Admittedly and successfully snftsell, the U.S. displays its way of life in an orderly aml relaxed fashion. The vis itor is more likely to recall the pavilion as an experience rather than an exhibi tion. Biggest attraction is the voting booths, and the biggest mystery is the location o f the rest rooms. S preading o ver a large site, the German Pavilion is perhaps the most precisely d etailed building at the Fair. The light curtain wall enclosure, the airy bridges anti the be a uti f u l polish ed wood floors display a degree of crafts manship seltlom seen. One thing of inte rest at the Fair is the many pools of water at walk level and the many panes of glass toith r10 visible support. Either somebody has a lot of insurance, or the mat te r of public safety is more close ly watch ed in Europe than it is in. this country . Not since the New York World's Fair in 1939 has there been such an interesting and varied assemblage of contemporary architecture in one area. T he bes t architects and engineers of Belgium and the 47 participating nations have done an excellent job of presenting their architecture to a world audience. To see the Fair at night is an adventure 111 itse lf. ·whether yo u walk along the Belvedere Bridge or take a ride in one of the many little blue Mercedes busses, clever lighting every where brings new character and excitement to the pavilions and many government buildings. In stark contrast to the many la rge, glass encased build ings of the Fair, the British Governmen t Pavilion, grea tly reminiscen t of a con tempo· rary cathedral, u tilizes very li ttle I natu ral light in its d isplays of time -I honored tradition and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Adjace nt buil d · ings d isplay cultural and industrial progress. The attractive and picturesque formal er1trance to the Fle mish Garde n s, a highlight of the B el gian section nf the Fair. E'ach Pavilion has an eating place, where favorite foods of the country may be enjoyed. Perhaps the most pleasant of these was the outdoor cafe of the Swiss Pavilion, overlook ing a small lake. Part of the British Pavilion is seen in the background. There is a serious gaiety about the Fair as men, women, and children from all over the world visit the pavilions of theirs and other countries. They see a gigantic exhibit of culture and science, past, present, and future. At Brusse ls, as shown in history, architecture proves to be a most profound mirror that reflects the various peoples and cultures represented. It seems a necessary pity then, that by Christmas time this gathering will be dispersed, with only the Atomium remaining to remind Brussels and the world of its 1958 Fair. Richard N . Bills, Br (Kansas), architect with the firm of Donald R. Hollis, A.l.A., Kansas City, Missouri, shares his trip to the World's Fair with Pi Kappa Alpha reatlers.
