American Red Cross Virtual Family Assistance Center in New York State

The American Red Cross across the regions of New York State have developed a program in response to COVID-19 to support individuals and families who have lost family members to death as a result of COVID-19. The program will link crisis counselors with families to provide emotional and spiritual support, as well as targeted short-term casework to assist with navigating through the challenging processes they might be faced with as a result of the death. This might include challenges with moving the family member’s body through the hospital, nursing home, medical examiner and funeral home systems in this time when those systems may be overwhelmed and their processes may be different than they normally are. They may also include linkage to legal resources for estate, custody, immigration or other issues related to the death. The following links to an online intake form can be submitted by a family member, a friend who thinks someone needs help, or an agency on behalf of the family. For those without access to the needed online technology, the phone number will link the caller to an intake person who will assist with the initial steps for getting assistance.

Did you know . . . .

Our parish has nurtured a number of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. One of the more unusual stories is that of a father and a son—Fr. William Sharkey and Br. William Sharkey, Jr. The two were also known as Bill (the father) and Billy (the son). Bill Sharkey was born in Massachusetts and raised by Irish immigrant parents. He and his eight siblings grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut. As a young man, Bill decided to enter the seminary. He earned extra cash by selling magazines in Mount Vernon, New York. As he stood on a street corner one day, he flipped a coin— heads to turn right, tails to turn left, and knocked on the door of the first house. A cute girl, about 18 years old, answered the door and Bill ended up asking her out. He went back to the church that was sponsoring him and told the priest he had met a girl and asked her out. The priest told him to follow his heart. The girl Bill had met was Concetta Vetrano, the daughter of Italian immigrants. The two were married on April 14, 1940. In 1953, they moved to Lake Ronkonkoma and later to Nesconset and Smithtown, raising eight children. The Sharkeys were active members of St. Patrick’s. Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and served as an usher and a religious education catechist. Concetta was an active member of the Rosary Altar Society, among other things. In 1985, Bill became one of St. Patrick’s first deacons. The next year, Concetta passed away. For the second time in his life, Bill considered the priesthood. He continued his theology education through the Society of the Holy Apostle in Cromwell, Connecticut. On January 21, 1989, he became Fr. Bill Sharkey and began serving in the Society’s missionary sector. Fr Sharkey traveled all over the and as far as Thailand. He finally settled in Kansas City. Ironically, his sister Millie was stationed there as well. She had joined the same order as a nun. When Fr. Sharkey became ill, his children brought him home. He died on March 21, 1996. Of his eight children, the one who gravitated most toward religious life was William, Jr. (Billy). Billy Sharkey was born in 1944 while the family was still in Mount Vernon. When they moved to Ronkonkoma, he would often go to the Cenacle. He also collected white buttons to use as Communion hosts and dressed his younger sisters and cousins as nuns in order to play “priest.” He began seminary life in 1957-58 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From 1967 to 1972, he live in Pallottine Novitiate House in Sag Harbor. Br. Bill also served as a truant officer at Eustace Prep School in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Beginning in 1988, he lived at Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii in Brooklyn for 12 years. In 1997, he was ordained a deacon and in 1999 he was transferred to Pallottine Seminary at Green Hill in West Hyattsville, Maryland. He died suddenly on October 16, 2000. One of his superiors described him as “a loving, selfless, very pious, religious and giving human being” who “went on his mission to bring Christ where even angels would fear to go.”

Another Saint for Our Time Not only has the coronavirus led to much sickness and death, it has also created massive unemployment. A great saint for those who are unemployed or in need of a better job is St. Cajetan. St. Cajetan lived just prior to the Reformation, a time when many clergy were indifferent or corrupt. St. Cajetan and a group of brother priests of the same mind formed a religious community seeking to spread authentic faith through their personal witness. St. Cajetan had a heart for the poor and would often provide financial assistance to the unemployed, visiting their homes to bless their families and provide basic necessities. He founded a bank so that the poor would not be abused by usurers who would charge high interest rates. He also founded a hospital for those with incurable diseases. St. Cajetan is the patron saint of the unemployed, gamblers and Argentina. His feast day is August 7th.

O Mary, you shine on our path as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. You, Salvation of the Roman People, know what we need. We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. One of the great advantages of the Internet is having access to so many resources. This includes spiritual resources. During this time when many are eliminating or greatly reducing their contact with the outside world, consider taking some time for spiritual renewal.

Whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me. Mother Teresa always remembered these words of Jesus. She said that she saw the face of Jesus in the face of each sick and dying person she helped. She asked the whole world to look for Jesus' face there, too. This movie presents the life and work of Mother Teresa with words and pictures that even the youngest child will enjoy. Children will happily learn that Mother Teresa was a person whose strong faith and trust in God helped her to make incredible changes in our world.
