The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, April 11, 2018 * the Boston Globe
The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, April 11, 2018 * The Boston Globe Red Sox keep ‘riding the wave’ in ninth straight victory Peter Abraham The Red Sox had the best record in spring training, winning 14 of their last 15 games. But it didn’t matter because it was spring training. Then they got off to the best start in team history, winning eight of their first nine games. But it didn’t matter because it came against the penny-pinching Tampa Bay Rays and Miami Marlins. Now does it matter? A 14-1 victory against the Yankees on Tuesday night certainly suggests there is more going on at Fenway Park than simply fortuitous scheduling. Mookie Betts had four hits, including a grand slam, as the Sox rolled to their ninth consecutive victory before a crowd of 32,357 at Fenway Park. At 9-1, the Sox have the best record in the American League under new manager Alex Cora. The first three hitters in the order — Betts, Andrew Benintendi, and Hanley Ramirez — were 8 of 9 with eight runs scored, nine RBIs, five extra-base hits, and four walks. “It’s definitely super fun to be involved in any win. I just do what I can,” said Betts, who is hitting .432 with a 1.263 OPS. Betts scored five runs, a career high. He is only the seventh player in history to score five or more runs against the Yankees, the first since Luis Castillo of the Mets in 2008. The 14 runs were the most for the Sox against the Yankees since a 14-1 victory on Aug.

  • LSUS Pilots Ranked 13Th in NAIA Preseason Polls
LSUS Pilots Ranked 13th in NAIA Preseason Polls NOVEMBER 28, 2006 Shreveport, LA---Since a 3rd place finish in the 2003 NAIA World Series, the LSUS Pilots have accumulated a 121-69 overall record which includes a 2005 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship, a 2006 GCAC Tournament Championship, and appearances in the 2005 and 2006 NAIA Region XIII Championship games. The Pilots quest for a second appearance at the NAIA World Series will begin in February 2007, but they have made the headlines with a No. 13 preseason ranking after finishing 41-23 in 2006. The Pilots continued success on the field has resulted in yet another solid recruiting class for Head Coach Rocke Musgraves and his 2007 squad. A big reason for the Pilots preseason ranking lies in the strength of what in Musgraves’ mind has become the strongest pitching staff ever assembled at LSUS. “It is very exciting when you can say you return your top two arms from the previous season in Kevin Jewell and Matt Clayman, who combined for 17- wins, 156-strikeouts, and platooned for 189.2 innings. We have strengthened both our starting rotation as well as our bullpen which allows us to start some very quality arms during our midweek games, while still being very strong off the bump on the weekend,” commented Musgraves. LSUS welcomes the addition of Prairie Baseball Academy’s Marc Dainty; a 6’5 right hander who will compete for a starting spot in the Pilots weekend rotation. Paul Marlow, a 6’7 right hander who has the ability to pitch in the 90mph range is also expected to have some success throughout his senior season.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.
