Born in Zurich (Switzerland) in 1929, Peter-Lukas Graf studied the flute with André Jaunet (Zurich), Marcel Moyse and Roger Cortet (Paris). The period as a principal flutist in Winterthur and in the Swiss Festival Orchestra Lucerne was succeded by many years of full time opera and symphonic conduct- ing. Her music draws from a wide array of influences including minimalism, spectralism, folk, and electronic mediums. Susanna’s music has been played by the JACK Quartet, ZAFA Collective, and Metropolis Ensemble, and members of the St. Louis Symphony. Her compositions have been featured in concerts and festivals throughout the world including the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival and Dimitria Festival in Thessaloniki, Greece. Susanna is currently an Artist in Residence at National Sawdust with Kinds of Kings, a composer collective dedicated to making the music community a more equitable and inclusive space. She is also Co-Founder and Co-Artistic Director of Terroir New Music, a concert/event series that pairs the music of living composers with craft food and drink. The purpose of this dissertation is to prepare and present a critical edition of Carl Nielsen's Quintet fbr Winds, Op. 43, a major work in the woodwind quintet repertoire. Written for the Copenhagen Wind Quintet in 1922, it is also considered a pivotal composition in Nielsen's artistic output. The only published edition of this piece, by Edition Wilhelm Hansen, is rife with errors, a consistent problem with many of Nielsen's compositions.

At the age of seven he received his tinuous flow of a fountain pen. The demonstration had gone horribly wrong, bending the nib and scattering ink in every first music lessons studying piano, and as music piqued his interest, by 1947 was studying piano and music pedagogy direction.

Gaudry BM, McGill University, 2000 BE, University of Toronto, 2001 MM, The Pennsylvania State University, 2009 Committee Chair: Terence Milligan, DMA ABSTRACT This document presents a narrative history of the chamber wind ensembles led by Paul Taffanel, Georges Barrère and Georges Longy in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Using different historical approaches, this study examines contemporaneous musical society and the chamber wind ensemble genre to explore the context and setting for the genesis of the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vents, the Société moderne des instruments à vents, the Longy Club and the Barrère Ensemble of Wind Instruments. A summary of each ensemble leader’s life and description of the activities of the ensemble, selected repertoire and press reactions towards their performances provide essential insights on each ensemble.
