Artist Statement

After studying design at Central Saint Martins, Reiko started out designing a range of products which she had made around the world, but it was discovering the joy of working with ceramicists in The , and tapping into over two centuries of knowledge in fine bone china production that led her to concentrate on ceramics and in 2012 move her studio to StokeonTrent.

Reiko spent her childhood in Japan and still makes frequent visits. Japan has not only been an inspiration for the elegant simplicity to which she strives, but the key to her appreciation of craft and craftsmanship. Reiko has collaborated with makers in different materials both in England and in Japan and is an advocate of the recent renaissance in regional heritage and craft hubs. In addition to design work, the company finishes many products inhouse using a range of unique processes.

Reactive glazing has been an area of focus since becoming embedded in the ceramics community in The Potteries. Using the region’s famous pure white bone china as a canvas, Reiko has been exploring the possibilities of reactive glazes to create unique surfaces. Inspired by the depth and character in the glazes used by traditional Japanese potters on high fire , it has taken years of testing to find glazes that can react in similar ways at Fine Bone China's low firing temperatures.
