THE UNIVERSITY of SWING EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY SWING DANCE SOCIETY Dear Student We are pleased to inform you that you have been given a place to study at the University of Swing from 6th-8th February 2015. Whether you are enrolled for classes, extra curricular activities or both, you are in for an educational treat of swinging proportions! All the information you will need to be successful in your studies can be found below, but if after reading this you have further questions do not hesitate to get in touch. Kind Regards, University of Swing Staff Matriculation Registration Friday: 18:00 - 23:00 or Saturday: 9:30 - 10:30 Our administration officers will be on the front desk on Friday night between 18:00 and 23:00 at the Welcome Party in Teviot Study, and on Saturday morning from 9am-10:30am in the entrance of Teviot. You will be handed your welcome pack which includes your student card, wristband and t-shirt (if you ordered one). Please make sure you register, as you cannot attend classes unless you are fully matriculated. Travel The campus is roughly a 10-15 minute walk from Edinburgh Waverly train station, which is also where the Airlink 100 bus terminates. The easiest way to get around is by foot, however if you are staying further out of the city centre then public transport is available. The Lothian Buses website (www.lothianbuses.com) has excellent information on timetables and bus stops. Registration is in , Directions:

From Airport: Taxis will take you directly to Teviot or take the 100 AIRLINK bus (£4) to its terminus at Waverly Station, follow station directions below From Waverly Station: 15 minute walk. Exit the station on Princes St. Turn right and walk past the and turn right again onto North Bridge. Continue to walk for about half a mile. Turn right at Nicolson Square by the Mosque Kitchen restaurant and continue past Beirut restaurant. Cross Potterrow and you will arrive in . Teviot Row House will be to your left. Driving: Please use Google Maps or other service to direct you to 13 Bristo Square, Edinburgh EH8 9AJ. There is paid on street parking available within easy walking distance of most venues. University Car Park information is available here: http://www.ed.ac.uk/schools-departments/ transport/parking/car-park-locations/central-area Finding your way on Campus All of your classes will be situated in one of two University buildings - Pleasance* and Teviot. We are proud to be holding classes in union, where the ancient floorboards are bound to take your triple stepping to a whole new level.

Teviot Row House • The Study - Located on the main floor of Teviot Row House through the New Amphion on the right. Events: Friday Evening Welcome Party, BSwi Saturday classes • The Debating Hall/Loft Bar - Located on the top floor of Teviot Row House up the sprial staircase to the right of the entrance. Events: DSwi classes, Sunday Afternoon Dance

Pleasance • The Highland Room - Entry is in the second archway through the door on the right. The room is on the top floor. Events: MSwi & Taster classes • The Ochil Room - Entry is in the second archway through the door on the right, go up to the first floor. Events: MSwi & Taster classes Pleasance (cont) • 48a Upper - Through the archway and left into Theatre entrance. Go up the first set of stairs and at the fist landing turn left, go through the door and continue up the next set of stairs. Events: Balboa classes

CSE (Centre for Sports & Exercise) • The Studio - The CSE is located beside the Pleasance Complex. The CSE staff can direct you to the studio which is located through winding passages in the building on the top floor. Please arrive early to this venue to ensure you can find the room. Events: DSwi classes.

Lauriston Hall • The Hall is located on Lauriston St. just off Lauriston Place. Events: Saturday Evening Graduation Ball. This venue is BYOB. Examinations Competitions Unlike most other univerisities, our examinations are optional with only a limitd number of participants. This year we are holding both a Jack and Jill and a Strictly Lindy. You may register in advance, online, or on Friday evening when you Matriculate. The university prides itself on fostering healthy competition, so we encourage students of all levels to sign up. Jack and Jill prelims are on Friday night at 9pm, with the finals being held on Saturday night at 8:30pm. The Strictly competition will be held directly afterwards. Come along and cheer on your fellow classmates as they swing out in the hope of winning some great prizes! Social Life Welcome Party – Teviot Study – Friday Night – 19:00 - 1:00 After matriculating, come along to our welcome party for new students. Live music will be provided by Swingessence. Graduation Ball – Lauriston Halls – Saturday Night – 19:00 - 23:00 Saturday’s Graduation Ball will be held in Lauriston Halls. Live music will be provided by members of the Edinburgh University Jazz Orchestra. Competition finals will take place at 20:30 and there will also be a chance to see the instructors strut their stuff. This venue is BYOB, however the university will not be held responsible for any alcohol-induced incidents which may occur on the premises. Remember, tardiness for Sunday’s classes will not be tolerated, and may result in the termination of your degree. Lindy to Blues After Party – Teviot Study – Saturday Night – 23:00 - 3:00 The fun will continue back at Teviot with a little bit more lindy and then a lot of blues. This venue does have a bar where you can purchase refreshments. Farwell Dance – Teviot Debating Hall & Loft Bar – Sunday – 17:00 - 20:00 Now that you’ve completed your degree, relax and enjoy some more dancing in the Debating Hall or just good times socialising in the Loft Bar which will be reserved for University of Swing attendees. We are happy to welcome visiting faculty from Edinburgh Swing Dance Society and Edinbop, as well as out own tutors to offer you the chance to try one of four different options: • Tap - Local superstar Cathy Harrison will be giving an introduction to tap dancing for any experience level. • Cake Walk -The Lindy we love evolved from this dance, come for a wee history lesson and a ton of fun with EUSDS’s own Jamie Davies and Katie Brooks. • Not your Grandma’s Shim Sham - There’s more than one way to shim sham: Kat will show you how to spice up your moves with mind blowing variations, cause t’aint whatcha do... • Thriller - You might know we love zombies here at EUSDS, so we’ve convinced Christi to take a break from Bal and show us Michael Jackson’s iconic dance routine.
