Club Information:

Good afternoon, everyone. Today, we welcome Peterborough Sports to this fine part of Suffolk as we go looking for our first win of the season after back-to-back 2-2 draws.

Club Officials: Last midweek’s AFC Rushden & Diamonds game was certainly a frustrating night for the home fans: 2-1 up, playing really well & creating plenty of chances with 20 mins to go, we were then pegged back by a late penalty. On the flip side, the Diamonds will probably leave thinking they deserved a point for hanging in there while down to 10 men, & in the closing moments both sides could have won it! Then, it was on to Hitchin last Saturday, & once again we got ourselves into a winning position - 2-0 up this time & playing really well - but were once again the architects of our own downfall, conceding another penalty & a late goal from a set piece! That made it 2 points from 2 games, when really we should have been taking at least 4 points based on the performances, but then that’s football! Still, if the glass is half-full, then we ignore the penalties conceded, the late goals & our vulnerability from set pieces, & instead focus on the form of striker Will Davies, who is finally starting to look like he belongs at this level, as well as Team Management: the impressive contributions & performances of the new signings brought in over the Summer & the fact that this team had absolutely bags of pace in it & looks capable of scoring plenty of goals! Generally, it is clear what the new management team are trying to do, & there are plenty of encouraging signs, even if, it would be fair to say, we are a work in progress at the moment!

Tonight’s opponents find themselves right in the middle of what is, admittedly, a fledgling league table with 6 points from their first 5 games, having lost just once so far this season. Therefore, I’d suggest a tough afternoon is in store if we are below our best.

Financial Board Members: In other news, it was interesting to see 3 former Blues strikers on target last Saturday for Andy Crisp their current clubs: Cemal Ramadan (Bury); Ryan Sharman (Cambridge City); & Matt Robin Watson Blake (Ipswich Wanderers). I don’t think I’m being too controversial in saying that all 3 Peter Mayhew had varying degrees of success during their time with the Blues, but are finding the net Trevor Elmy for their new clubs. Steve Coulter Peter Douglass Finally, I’m penning these notes ahead of the midweek FA Cup game here against Anne-Marie Williams Conference North AFC Telford. Hopefully, at the very least, we will have been able to Dave Williams give a good account of ourselves in front of a decent sized gate. Fingers crossed!

Matchday Committee: Enjoy this afternoon’s game, everyone.

Peterborough Sports FC — Club History

Peterborough Sports Football Club was founded in 1908 and were initially known as Brotherhoods Engineering Works (pictured below), a non-competitive factory side for the company that was founded by Peter Brotherhood in 1867 that was famed for designing and manufacturing the first steam turbine engine in the world. The club honours its heritage to this day with the turbine engine featuring in the club badge (see next page, top right) and “The Turbines” as the club nickname. We were called Bearings Direct in the 1990s and then changed to Peterborough Sports all at the same Lincoln Road ground, which has undergone a major revamp since 2012 funded by a combination of Parkway Social Club, the Football Foundation and former Manager & Chairman and now Managing Director Tommy Cooper. The club started competitive life in the Northants League in 1919 (which became the UCL in 1934), winning the title in that first season before joining the Peterborough League in 1923. The club once entertained Tottenham Hotspur at Lincoln Road before the 2nd World War in front of a crowd of 4,000 at a time when a stand went down the whole length of the ground, and drew over 3,000 for the visit of local rivals Peterborough & Fletton United (now Peterborough United).

Without doubt, the clubs most famous player is Victor Watson (pictured right), who played in the Northants League title-winning team of 1919/20 before moving onto West Ham United for £50 via Wellingborough in March 1920. He remains the Hammers’ record goal-scorer with 326 goals from 505 appearances. Watson played 5 times for England scoring 4 times between 1923 & 1930, including a brace against Scotland in 1930, and played in the first FA Cup Final at Wembley in front of 200,000 fans v Bolton Wanderers.

6

any of the club’s early years were notably unsuccessful. The Northants League win in 1920 was followed 6 years later by a Peterborough League Division 3 title in 1926, with a gap then to the Peterborough Football Association Minor Cup win in 1940. The barren spell of success continued right up until 1976 when the Peterborough Division 3 title was secured again, which was repeated in 1981.

The club enjoyed a brief golden period at the start of the 1990s with promotion secured back to the Peterborough Premier Division and two Northants Lower Junior Cups being landed in 1994 & 1995 under the management of current Managing Director Stephen “Tommy” Cooper. The club again had some barren time before the Turbines suddenly became successful in the 2006/07 season when both the Peterborough Premier Division and Northants Junior Cup were secured for the first time in the club’s history under the management of Al Lenihan & Tommy Flynn. Unfortunately, the club did not follow up on this success, and in the ensuing years almost went out of existence. It was only the efforts of current life president Colin Day (who has been at Sports over half a century), Secretary Roger Martin & Manager Chris Bartlett that kept the club running. Tommy Cooper returned to the club in the role of Chairman in January 2011, and in that 2010/11 season, the club secured its first PFA trophy since the 2nd World War when lifting the Challenge Cup, and were promoted back to the Peterborough League Premier Division for a short two-season stay. Bartlett was replaced as manager by Seamus Morgan for the 2012/13 season and the former Peterborough Northern Star reserves manager steered the club into the with a 3rd place position in 2012/13 when Netherton turned down their promotion having finished in 2nd place. The Reserves enjoyed 3 successive promotions after reforming at the start of the decade and are now inthe Peterborough League Premier Division themselves, which they won in 2016/17. The club’s 1st season at UCL level started well but ultimately ended in a disappointing 16th-placed finish, with Morgan replaced as manager by former QPR & England Under 21 manager Chris Plummer in January. The following season 2014/15 saw the side challenging for promotion right to the end of the season, but a run of 7 away games to finish, saw them eventually finish in 5th spot. At the end of that season, Plummer stood aside, and his assistant Jimmy Dean took the reins for the 2015/16 campaign. In his first year, the club won the title at a canter by a huge 21 points, helped by winning their first 23 games. The side also picked up the UCL League Cup, becoming the first side from Division 1 to ever do so, after a penalty shoot-out triumph against Premier Division Holbeach United. The side also added the Northants Junior Cup for a 2nd time and the prestigious Hinchingbrooke Cup for the1st time and were to be forever dubbed the ‘Fourmidables’. That success was continued into the 2016/17 as the team won the UCL Premier Division with a league record points tally of 112, and they were the top scorers in the top 11 levels of English football with 150 in the league and 205 in all competitions. The Hinchingbrooke Cup was also retained with a 2-1 victory over 2nd-placed Deeping Rangers, and the side had its best-ever run in the FA Vase, reaching the 4th round. The side entered the Northern for the 2017/18 season and initially found the going tough – indeed the side went into 2018 bottom of the table before a dramatic turnaround saw the Turbines finish amost respectable 12th, with that summer seeing the side transfer across to the Southern League.

Leiston U14s Report

Good afternoon, everyone. It has felt like forever since I last wrote a report for the programme due to lockdown. We tried everything to keep the boys active by running weekly Zoom sessions with one: strength and conditioning; and the other: ball mastery. We set weekly skill challenges for the boys to complete, which led to some healthy competition and was great for team spirit. There were also weekly quizzes to allow the families a time toget together, which was enjoyed by everyone.

We have started the season excellently; we are currently top of the league after playing and winning all four games played, with a goal difference of plus 10. Below are match summaries of each of the games played so far:

Leiston 2 -1 Needham Market

It was evident in our first game that all the hard work the boys put in during lockdown had paid off as we looked stronger, fitter and more focused than our opposition, Needham Market. It was a game where both teams took two very different approaches to playing the game with Needham looking to hit it long at every opportunity, while we played through the thirds with Josh Yaxley and Connor Green linking the play superbly. We dominated the game, which had a lot riding on it due to many of the boys knowing one another from school and Saturday football. We went 1-0 up after a great goal by Charlie, and created several chances which their keeper did well to keep out. Needham then scored an equaliser soon after and had a short spell that forced our defence to make a few big tackles, and Jack stood firm in goal all game, instructing the defence throughout and claiming the ball from corners. After more good play we scored a deserved second through Jake Howells with 10 minutes to go.

Wroxham 2 – 3 Leiston

Our second game of the season was away to Wroxham who we had beaten in a friendly 8-0 a few weeks before. The boys entered this game a little complacently and were soon shown that they would not be able to simply roll up and win without trying. We soon went one goal down, were second to every ball, and were not moving the ball how we can. However, we managed to equalise against the run of play before Wroxham were awarded a dubious penalty where Jack had come out and won the ball cleanly and clearly (even their fans said it), but the ref blew up, gave the penalty, and said, “I couldn’t really see!” After a good discussion at half time and a change in tactics, we pushed our defence higher and closed the gaps between our defence, midfield and attack. Owen and Billy did well to keep their dangerous striker quiet, which helped us to dominate the midfield and score a superb goal through Sam Cox, where he blasted the ball into the top corner on the rebound after hitting the wall with the initial free kick. Sam Cox then scored the winner through some excellent individual skill, beating two players and slotting the ball into the far corner. (See photo on next page)

Leiston 5 – 1 Stanway

Our third game was at home game against Stanway. This was a real game of two halves where the opposition dominated the first half, and we never really got going. But credit to our defence of Owen, Billy, Ben and Sam who soaked up a lot of pressure, although we did find ourselves 0-1 down at half time due to Stanway dispatching a penalty.

18

The boys going through debriefing in the recent win at Wroxham.

We started the second half with a lot more intensity, and pushed our defence up the pitch, while pressing them from the front. Great pressing from our front four led to two early goals from Ollie Griggs. Good work from Jake Adams helped Charlie to add to our lead, and Billy scored an outrageous scorpion kick. A superb 15-minute spell meant we had gone 4-1 up, and Sam Cox finished the game off with a great finish across the keeper.

Newmarket 2 – 6 Leiston

Our fourth game of the season was against Newmarket. This time we got off to a great start, creating loads of chances, but could not score! Somehow we managed to go 0-2 down, completely against the run of play. Then their keeper decided to put the ball down and pick it back up, which meant we were awarded an indirect free kick from which we scored superbly into the top corner through Charlie. We then dominated the midfield and scored soon after through Sam Marsh after a great run down the left, beating his man for pace. After more pressing, Charlie nicked the ball high up the pitch and laid it off for Ollie to smash it into the top corner. We went in at half time 3-2 up knowing that we could score many more if we continued the way we had been playing. Ollie Dawson continued to get us playing at the back, distributing early to Levon, Oscar and Will. Charlie came alive and scored two fantastic goals to put us 5-2 ahead. Deacon finished the game with an excellent half- volley finish from a corner, topping off an excellent attacking display where we were relentless in the second half. We hope to continue our unbeaten start away to Cockfosters in the cup on Sunday 18th October. I would like to congratulatie the first team on an excellent win in the FA Cup this week, and thank them for giving the boys the opportunity to be ball boys for the game. They had a fantastic evening. Good luck to all Leiston teams this weekend!

The international break very rarely affects non-League clubs, but Non-League is increasingly influencing the international scene. Each season we see more players deservedly earn moves into the Football League, and some even go on to reach the absolute peak.

Over the last seven months, the football pyramid has become even more divided, with ‘Project Big Picture’ trying hard to increase the gap, but the importance of lower-league clubs to the product on the pitch has never been more obvious. Six players in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad have had stints in Non-League, and there were five in the side Ryan Giggs picked for Wales when the two teams met last week.

Nick Pope started the friendly fixture at Wembley having begun his career in the Eastern Counties League with Team Bury before progressing to Bury Town in the Isthmian League. Following his move to Charlton Athletic, Pope went on loan to Harrow Borough, Welling United, Cambridge United and Aldershot Town for more crucial experience of first team football. The back-up England keepers against Wales - Jordan Pickford and Dean Henderson - are also no strangers to Non-League. Pickford had loan spells at Darlington and Alfreton Town, while Henderson played in goal for Stockport County just over four years ago when they were in . He’s also pushing to become Manchester United’s number one. Centre-back Tyrone Mings impressed in senior football at Yate Town and Chippenham Town in the Southern League before a successful trial at Ipswich Town forged the start of his top-flight career. Dominic Calvert-Lewin made his England debut, and scored, in the 3-0 win over Wales. A debut goal was nothing new to the Everton striker; as a 17-year-old, he bagged on his first appearance for Stalybridge Celtic against Hyde on Boxing Day when Sheffield United sent him out for game time. On New Year’s Day, in the reverse fixture, he scored twice and set up three. Danny Ings also got in on the act at Wembley, scoring his first goal for his country via a bicycle kick. Ten years ago, he was netting in Non-League at Dorchester Town, on loan from Bournemouth. Many others in the England squad either started or showed their talents in the lower reaches of the Football League before stepping up into the Premier League spotlight. Non-League football and its clubs play a vital role in developing players just as much as the top-flight academies – every player has a different path, and their roots should not be forgotten.
