On Saturday 14 March 2020 we entertained Brockenhurst at Bashley Road and closed the gates behind them as they left. Five months later the gates of the now newly named Glen Mex Stadium re-opened for business, the first caller being Hamworthy Utd on the 8th August. Tonight, by chance, our opponents are once again Brockenhurst; the stadium name may have changed but the gates are the same and after Bock leave, they will once again be closed to an uncertain future. Brockenhurst should not have refused that lucky white heather as they are also in danger of losing out on the FA Vase should the shutdown be lengthy. Because of Storm Aiden their home tie against Street was moved to this Saturday and unless there is a drastic change of policy, the gate will be shut on that game for at least a month.

As I write the draw for the second round of the Vase has just been made and we are away again, this time against either Sherborne or Millbrook. Not that we worry as one of the highlights of the Vase as you get into the later rounds is the experience of playing on the home ground of teams from other regions: a veritable magical mystery tour. Should Sherborne win it will still be magical for me but not mysterious as my son and family live there and the town is one of my favourite spots. Millbrook is also not a mystery as it is the other side of the Tamer Estuary from Plymouth where I worked for a number of years and just up the road from the twin resorts of Cawsand and Kingsand; my families favourite beach spots. Fingers crossed that our progress along the Vase trail does not fall foul to a season ending lockdown.

Back to tonight, it’s always a pleasure to play our near neighbour and as we both have had indifferent starts and reside lower middle table with two points between us if should be a close exciting game for bragging rights. Keep smiling and keep safe

Mike Cranidge

Bashley - The Wessex League & Beyond

In season 1985-86 Bashley finished fourth in the League Division Two behind Christchurch, Follands and Ringwood with the League also including such as Warsash, Malshanger and Sway but they presumably applied for and were accepted to the newly formed Wessex League for the following season, with their facilities no doubt playing a part in their acceptance. A big step up the ladder but the Club took it on their stride and at the end of the season topped the table, two points ahead of Road Sea, to become the inaugural Wessex League Champions. It was no “one season wonder” either for they went on to top the table for the following two seasons, four points and then eleven points clear, with Havant being the runners up each time. After their third success they were promoted to the Southern League South Division which again caused no problems as they won the title at the first time of asking, finishing five points clear of runners up Poole Town. The league also included Salisbury, Fareham and Andover plus opposition much further afield and four seasons after their travels included the short hop to Sway, they found themselves journeying to the likes of Canterbury and the Isle of Sheppey. So 1990-91 saw the Club in the Southern League Premier Division with local opposition in the shape of Dorchester, Poole and Weymouth – the last named finished bottom of the table – as well as established Clubs such as Worcester City, Gloucester and Dover. They finished a respectable tenth in that initial season and followed that up with fourth and ninth places before a poor season in 1993-94 saw them finish one from bottom and suffer relegation back to the South Division. There were five seasons in that Division with third place achieved in 1997-98 before it was all change again.

The Southern League have long had a passion for changing the names of their Divisions and suddenly Bashley were in Division East. Given that the Division also included Dorchester, Salisbury and Newport, “East” seemed something of a misnomer. Again, it was five seasons before further change, with fifth place in 2002-13 their best placing, before the FA’s strange version of geography struck with a move to the Isthmian League Division One which is largely based around London. Fleet were their “local” rivals and AFC Wimbledon topped the table before happily, after two seasons, they were transferred back to the Southern League South and West (another new title!) Back on home soil so to speak, with Thatcham, Andover, Winchester, Lymington and New Milton and Newport amongst the opposition, they carried all before them, amassing 102 points and earning promotion back to the Southern Premier. They finished ninth in their first season and enjoyed six further years at that level before being relegated back to the South and West Division which led to two very traumatic and miserable seasons. Major problems on and off the field saw them finish bottom both times and in the second season they conceded two hundred and one goals and returned to the Wessex League in 2016-17, nearly thirty years after they had left.

During the above period they competed in all three of the FA Competitions at various times and the following represent their best performance in each.

FA VASE 1987-88 Reached the last four and were drawn against Champions elect Emley from the Northern Counties East League – which at that time contained such delightfully named Clubs as Grimethorpe Miners Welfare and Harrogate Railway Athletic. The tie at home finished in a one all draw in front of 3,500 spectators, still a ground record, but a single goal for the home Club in Yorkshire sent them in to the Final.

FA TROPHY 1997-98 The Third Round and a two nil defeat at home by Hayes.FA CUP 1994-95 Second Round Proper. Lost one nil at home to Swansea City. One would perhaps have expected a Football League Club to attract the largest attendance but it is likely that there was a restriction on numbers at the time and it is likely that the Vase attendance mentioned above will never be bettered. So back to the Wessex League – not quite the full circle but the League are delighted to have them as members and perhaps provide a base for them to climb the ladder again.

A History of Brockenhurst

Brockenhurst FC history...The club was founded in 1898 initially playing close to the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive. The Badgers were founder members of the New Forest league which they won a number of times. They moved before the first World War to a site between the Rose and Crown and Snakecatcher pubs. Following the war the club played in both the Bournemouth and Hampshire leagues, moving to Fathersfield. In 1931 they were forced to move again to Black Knoll when Fathersfield was given over to housing. In 1935 the club won the New Forest Lads Cup. Within two years the Badgers moved to Oberfield and after the Second World war they spent some seasons at Tile Barn before moving to their current home at Grigg Lane in 1951.

The club were crowned Hampshire League Division Three champions in 1960 as well as winning the Bournemouth Seniors cup. They moved between the Second and Third divisions until in 1971 they were promoted to Division One where they won the league title in the 1975-76 season. Brockenhurst were founder members of the Wessex League joining in 1986.

The club’s FA Cup giant killing reached its pinnacle in season 2001/02 when Kingstonian were defeated and in season 2004/05 the club reached the 3rd qualifying round, the run ending in defeat to Bath City. In season 2012/13 the club returned to the Wessex Premier League as Division One champions and reached the final of both the Southamption DFA Senior Cup and the Wessex league Cup though unfortunately were beaten in both.

The club has been rebuilding under the leadership of Manager Pat McManus in recent seasons with the target of going better than last season’s tenth position in the coming season and developing the squad to the best possible finish.

Keynsham v Bashley

BASH ‘HARRIED’ THROUGH TO THE NEXT ROUND

Keynsham Town 0 Bashley 4

FA Vase First Round Proper.

After Preliminary Round victories at Baffins Milton Rovers and Ash Utd, Bashley changed direction and travelled west to meet Toolstation Western League Keynsham Town in the First Round of the FA Vase. By kick off, Storm Aiden had done its worst and the home side’s 3G pitch was a quick drier. Bashley took time to adjust to the conditions and the only incident of note in the opening spell was an injury to a Keynsham’s Tom Johnston who then had to be replaced. It was left to Harry McGrath to settle the nerves of the travelling fans with a composed finish that opened the scoring and triggered Bashley’s attacking flair. A hard drive from Conor Whiteley severely tested Ash Clark in the home goal and minutes later he sent another effort over the bar following dazzling footwork from Harry Bunce. A lone attack on the Bash goal was repelled by Sam Thompson between the sticks whilst at the other end a forty-yard torpedo from Lewis Ross seared paint from the top of the crossbar.

There was some concern as the second half started that despite their efforts Bashley were just one goal to the good and it was left to McGrath to calm any fears. Fifteen minutes in, he danced through the K’s defence and earned reward for his footwork as his shot was deflected past the helpless Clark. It was now all Bash: Jamie Webber and Tom Betts came off the bench and Bash continued to press; a Morgan free kick was kept out by the alert keeper, but he had no answer when McGrath stuck again. A slide-rule perfect pass from Whiteley ignited Bunce whose precision cross was slammed home by the hattrick hero. The final say went to Morgan who iced the cake in the ninetieth minute by taming a dropping ball with a volley to the back of the net.
