White Concert Hall Washburn Universityy Topeka, Kansas FREE ADMISSION In 2011: a 3-day event! “The First Academy Awards®, 1927-28”

The theme for our 15th annual festival is “The First Academy Awards 1927-28.” Originally created to honor fi lms in two-year increments, the policy was changed in the mid-1930s when the Awards became a yearly event. The fi rst year, however, was the only year in which only silent fi lms competed in all categories. The Jazz Singer, 1927, was con- sidered a shoe-in for Best Picture, but this “talkie” seemed to have an unfair advantage over other fi lms, so it received an honorary award. All of the fi lms being presented at this year’s Kansas Festival will either be from those two years or have won or been nominated for an Academy Award.
