Synopsis:

This assignment coordinates the placement, orientation and on-going worker support of IVEP, YAMEN! and SALT exchange participants in Indonesia. In order to achieve the goals set by the program of support to both young men and young women in this particular cultural context, couples will be considered over single applicants.

Assignment Narrative:

MCC's work in Indonesia aims to support the Indonesian churches' calling to be a community of salvation in the broadest sense. MCC connects closely with Mennonite World Conference member churches in Indonesia. These include the Evangelical Mennonite Church of Java (GITJ), the Muria Mennonite Church (GKMI) and the Christian Church of Indonesia (JKI). MCC also relates to the Evangelical Christian Church of Papua (GKI-TP).

One of MCC's core values is “connecting people”. Through the exchange programs of SALT, IVEP, and YAMEN!, MCC facilitates interchange and mutual learning between its supporting constituency and Indonesian churches, so that all may give and receive. One MCC worker noted, “Connecting Peoples is so important because it is through the relationships that we build, between people and groups of people who do not normally interact with each other, that we discover our real selves, that we experience what God's grace really means and we discover that God is taking us places we wouldn't have imagined on our own.”

The Indonesia Exchange Coordinator helps to make smooth connections between Indonesia, North America, and other parts of the Global South for SALT, YAMEN!, and IVEP participants and the communities that host them. In 2015-2016, MCC Indonesia plans to send six IVEP and three YAMEN! participants and to receive four SALT and four YAMEN! participants. The geographic spread of exchange participants will require bus, plane and perhaps boat travel in and Papua.

The Exchange Coordinators will represent MCC Indonesia to partners, church connections, and to GSL (Global Service Learning) participants. This person will work closely in collaboration with MCC Representatives to ensure that the strategic plan of the MCC program is met through the GSL programs. The Exchange Coordinator will also work closely with the national staff person assigned to the connecting people role. The Exchange Coordinator will need to learn and used MCC planning, monitoring, evaluating and reporting systems. The Exchange Coordinator will need to develop a deep knowledge and understanding of partner organizations, church dynamics, cross-cultural issues, and young adult issues.

Working alongside the Reps and the office Logisitcs staff, the Exchange Coordinators may also be asked to take the lead in organizing visitors to MCC Indonesia? Periodically Examples of MCC visitors in the past have been GSL Learning tours, staff from Canadian or US offices as well as writers and photographers from Communications.

Study of the for up to four months will be provided in Salatiga before beginning the assignment. The work in the MCC Office and with the SALT YAMEN! And IVEP participants is mostly in English, but relationships with MCC partners as well as community and daily life will be mostly in Indonesian. Language learning also provides the opportunity to develop cultural understanding. Life in Indonesia will be enhanced by knowledge of the language.

The Indonesia Exchange Coordinator is a Service Worker position, reporting to the MCC representatives.

Duties: · Coordinate all aspects of three one-year (service and learning focused) GSL programs for young adults - IVEP, YAMEN! and SALT · Supervise, shepherd, mentor and provide worker-care for SALT & YAMEN! participants living in Indonesia through traveling and hosting gatherings and individual meetings. · Develop, execute and evaluate annual cross-cultural experience orientation and debrief retreats · Recruit, select, prepare, send, and welcome back Indonesian participants serving outside of Indonesia · Consult local partners regarding places for YAMEN and SALT participants to serve and methods for selecting Indonesian participants to send abroad · Traveling is a regular and enjoyable part of this assignment. Most often it involves day trips in Java but will also include two week-long trips to Papua each year. · Develop and maintain a database of IVEP, YAMEN and SALT alumni · Support the team through assisting with planning team events or at times assisting in-country SW orientation events, as requested · Function as an active member of the MCC Indonesia team through regular reporting, team meetings and retreats, support and learning travel to other MCC sites in Indonesia, mutual care and support for other MCC team members, logistical tasks, participation in local community and church connections

Location Description:

Salatiga is located in Central Java. It is about a one hour drive to , Central Java’s capital and chief port. One and a half hours to the south of Salatiga is Solo () which also has an international airport. Jogjakarta is two hours away.

Salatiga is situated at the base of Mt. Merbabu. Because of its elevation, the climate is temperate. Temperatures are rarely oppressively hot during the day and are cool at night. It is occasionally windy, and through the wet season from October through April the rain falls regularly and heavily.

The population of Salatiga is around 175,000 with about 90% of its residents being ethnic Javanese. There is a small Chinese minority and a few people from other ethnic groups. About 60% of the residents are Muslim and 40% Christian. In general, Java is a higher majority Muslim.

Salatiga’s economy is based firmly on agriculture. The city lies in a fertile region and is a market center for rice, fruit, vegetables, cattle, peanuts, rubber, tobacco, coffee, and cocoa. Its markets and shops supply some processed foods and other manufactured goods for the surrounding rural area.

MCC will provide simple but adequate housing for the MCC family or individual. Medical facilities are available in Salatiga. For more complex needs one may go to Semarang. There is a Christian international school in Salatiga.

Challenges: Frequent travel may be rigorous. Maintaining boundaries for self-care will be important. The assignment may require some periods of “office work” to give space if the worker is an introvert.
