Early on he could duplicate the rock sounds of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan was a definite influence as well. But when he picked up a Howlin’ Wolf record at a local bargain bin, it changed his life. “I was about 12 then, and it was the hippest thing I’d ever heard,” he says. “His guitar player, Hubert Sumlin, was a revela- tion.” he says. Soon after he developed a friendship with Atlanta blues man Felix Reyes, who allowed the young prodigy to sit in regularly throughout Atlanta with his popular act, Felix And The Cats. At 14, Sean won the 1994 Blues Talent Contest sponsored by the Memphis Beale Street Blues Society, and he later competed in the International Blues Competition, an event which also featured another notable contestant, Susan Tedeschi. The two would soon join forces on a series of national tours with Sean as the lead guitar. Their partnership would culminate with Sean providing the sizzling fretwork on Te d e s c h i ’s best selling “Just Won’t Burn.” His stint with Tedeschi along with a steady series of professional gigs and recording dates beginning at age 14, gave Sean the experience and confidence to leave Tedeschi to front his own band. It wasn’t long before he was on the road with his own band, and along the way sitting in with the likes of Cotton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins, and Bo D i d d l e y. In 1996 he recorded his first album, Call the Cops for Blue Sun Records. Critical reaction was strong. Real Blues magazine called it “an explosive debut,” and England’s Blues and Rhythm said it was “some of the finest, purest blues guitar anywhere.” In 1997, Tedeschi and Sean met up again at the Springing The Blues Festival in Jacksonville and began gigging together out of Boston, then Atlanta. As the success of her Tone Cool album and touring schedule g r e w, Sean’s prowess garnered impressive notices across the country. Sean returned to Atlanta in late 1998 and assembled the band’s current lineup of Melvin Zachary on bass, drummer Terence Pranther, Paul Linden on harp and piano and keyboardist Matt Wauchope. T h e band was soon in the studio to record Cuttin’ In. As Sean puts it, “ We really wanted to come up with something new within a roots- oriented setting, and I’m real pleased with the way it turned out. The band loves reworking the great New Orleans and Chicago s t u ff.” The result was a breakthrough album on which prompted Blues Access to wonder “If he’s this good now, what can he achieve with a few more years on those vocal chords?” and gar- nered a W.C. Handy Award nomination for “Best New A r t i s t D e b u t .” 2001 saw the band tearing up the festival circuit with jaw drop- ping shows and back in the studio to record Moanin’ For Molasses If Cuttin’ In was the breakthrough then Molasses served notice that Sean is the real deal. Not content to rely on the “formula” and pro- duce another CD of Chicago and New Orleans covers he’s expanding his sound to include hard soul with an absolutely amaz- ing cover of James Brown’s “I Want You So Bad,” a hard driving rendition of Johnny Ta y l o r ’s “You Can’t Win With a Losing Hand” and a nice batch of originals. On this CD Costello’s guitar isn’t about flash, it has a refined, clean sound reminiscent of the mas- ters, vintage Buddy Guy included, the result is nothing short of bril- l i a n t . If you have a chance to see Sean Costello live jump on it, drag all your friends to the show...they’ll thank you later! In meantime check out his CDs and discover what can happen when a young guitar god rejects the flash and opts instead for passion, under- standing and respect for the music. We’re sure you’ll agree the blues has bright future with Sean Costello at the helm. Take 3 talented guys who musically are always on the same page, add the simplici- ty of a trio and you get Hatchet Jack. Vocally John Wood (drums & vocals) and Paul Murphy (guitar & vocals) are a powerhouse, belting out blues that Stevie, Albert and Freddie would all approve of. You will almost always find John and Charley Taylor (bass) in the pocket, laying down the foundation for some pretty hot fret work by Paul. Paul’s influences, from The Beatles to Hendrix mixed with over 25 years of experience, have earned him almost legend status among the locals in S.E.
