HISTORICAL NOTE: An initial organizational meeting occurred in Tucson in October, 1903. This led to the formal establishment of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association in Phoenix at the Legislative Council Chambers on January 4, 1904 with seventy-eight members. Their original goals were to protect the cattle industry from rustlers and brand tampering and to promote support of the Arizona Rangers.

Over the decades the scope of the Association expanded to include an educational component at its annual convention on such issues as legislation, stock management, cattle and horse breeding, cattle diseases, range and watershed management, over grazing, wildlife habitat, wilderness areas, water rights, taxation, land ownership, and relationships with state and federal government. Arizona governors and other public officials frequently attended and gave presentations at the Association’s conventions. Because cattle were an important industry for Arizona’s economy, its membership was influential in Arizona politics. Many Association members served in the Arizona Legislature.

Past Association presidents include: Lynn Anderson, John Babbitt, Steve Bixby, Fred Boice, Henry Boice, Bob Bowman, Ernest Browning, Ernest Chilson, Fred Colter, Ralph Cowan, E. Ray Cowden, Norman Fain, Fred Fritz, Dwight B. Heard, Ed Horrell, Joe Lane, Ted Lee, Herb Metzger, Duane Miller, Edward Monk, Charles Mullen, Earl Platt, Jim Ronstadt, Carlos Ronstadt, Brad Stewart, Anderson Cone Webb, Jim Webb, and Milton D. (Bud) Webb. Subsequent Executive Directors and Executive Vice Presidents in the 20th Century were Bill Davis, John M. Olson, Pamela Neal, and Sandy Naughton.

Abbie Keith, a former central and northern Arizona woman, was the Association secretary from 1923 until her retirement in 1963. She continued an emeritus affiliation with this organization until her death at age ninety six in 1984. In 1923 she expanded a small newsletter into the Weekly Market Report and Newsletter. In 1945 she established the Arizona Cattlelog to provide increased news, information and vendor contacts for members. Under Keith’s influence, this publication celebrated ranching as a lifestyle and a distinctive culture. Annual gatherings on and at conventions also promulgated the ranching lifestyle and provided isolated ranch families opportunities to socialize and exchange news and information.

Roscoe Wilson and Richard Schaus regularly wrote for the Arizona Cattlelog providing biographical sketches of past and current ranchers, cattle history, and news of the Arizona Cowbelles, the women’s branch of the Association. Schaus was first a free-lance writer for the Association beginning in 1949. He was editor of the Arizona Cattlelog from 1962 to his retirement in 1975. He continued to write historical articles for the magazine until 1980. Schaus was particularly interested in Arizona ranching history, and for thirty years collected a broad range of Arizona materials on cattle diseases, cattle , economics, range forage, water and wilderness. These documents can be found in the Schaus Collection FM MSS 6. The photographic files of ranches and ranchers in the mid- 20th Century, many appearing in issues of the Arizona Cattlelog, are significant. This collection also contains a small amount of correspondence files of the Arizona Cattle Growers Association, 1925-1979, and copies of the Arizona Sanitary Board records, 1871-1927.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: This is a reprocessed collection due to significant accretions from the time the bulk of the materials were donated in 1983. This was first processed and a finding aid prepared in 1987 which may have reflected original order. Reprocessing incorporated numerous additions into that file structure. It also presented the opportunity to create a more contemporary finding aid that included more dates and descriptive metadata.

This collection is arranged in three series. Series I: Correspondence and Subject Files; Series II: Photographs; Series III: Publications.

Series I: Correspondence and Subject Files (1904-1980). Arranged in separate, generally alphabetical sequences. Presumably these represent the original filing system. The History file contains scattered early documents of the Association, 1904-1940’s, some of which tangentially relate to the ACGA Convention Proceedings in Series III: Publications. The U.S. Forest Service cut Arthur Wright’s grazing allotment which resulted in a landmark hearing in 1976. Three boxes in this series contain hearing proceedings, background studies and correspondence relating to this important case for Western states.

Series II: Photographs. (1871-1970). Donated by Dorothy Webb from 1998-2002. Matt Culley, Prescott, was the professional photographer of the positive images which primarily reflect cattle and horse shows and auctions. The negatives in this series were presumably created by Richard Schaus and document a wide range of individuals, ranches and Association events. Specific identified images of people and locations are filed alphabetically at the beginning of the

The many images of grazing ranges may be of interest to researchers investigating range management and environmental habitat.

Series III. Publications (1904-2011). Includes three subseries: magazines, maps, and individual publications. Magazines include issues of the Arizona Cattlelog begun by the Association in 1945. In January 1977, with a new format and publisher, its title changed to Arizona Cattlegrowers Association Outlook. The title reverted back to Arizona Cattlelog in February, 1985. News and photographs of the ranching industry and sketches of ranchers and ranches make this an important source of historical information. Issues of the Arizona Stockman (1941-1953) reported news of the Association. Scattered issues of the Arizona Farmer- Ranchman can be found here. Also included are proceedings of the ACGA Conventions which further document the Association’s early years.

Note: Note that oversized maps were removed from the collection when it was first processed. These can now be found in the map department at the Noble Library. Researchers are also advised to consult the Arizona Cattle Growers Association Collection at the Archives Division, Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, MG 12. It spans the years 1904-1984, and contains dues records and market reports and newsletters in three boxes and one ledger.
