UTSA ROADRUNNERS TEAM NOTES

• Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Frank Wilson, UTSA returns 52 lettermen, including 18 starters — nine on offense, seven on defense and two specialists.

• The Roadrunners will play a nonconference schedule that includes the season opener against UIW on Aug. 31 and Army West Point on Sept. 14 at the Alamodome and road dates with Baylor (Sept. 7) and Texas A&M (Nov. 2). In fact, UTSA will not leave the state of Texas until they play at Old Dominion on Nov. 9.

• Both of UTSA’s returning specialists collected all-conference accolades last season. Deep snapper Grant Merka, a senior from Elgin, was named second-team All-Conference USA, while Jared Sackett, a junior place-kicker from Fort Worth, was honorable mention along with being a Lou Groza Award semifinalist for the second straight season. Additionally, sophomore offensive guard Spencer Burford was a C-USA All-Freshman Team selection, joining junior defensive lineman Jaylon Haynes and Sackett as current Roadrunners with league all-freshman team credentials.

• The Roadrunners led C-USA and ranked eighth in the FBS in fewest penalty yards (499) and second in the league and 16th in the country in fewest penalty yards per game (41.6) last season.
