When deciding on the method(s) used for your program, the best use of volunteer and financial resources must be considered.

PURPOSE: To ensure food sourced for Student Nutrition Programs in the Sudbury and Manitoulin Districts are safe, nutritious, affordable and help sustain the program long term.

GROCERY STORES Pros:  Store Charge Accounts- Ability to open a store charge account at most stores, so volunteers do not have to pay out of pocket and wait for reimbursement  Pre-Order groceries- by sending a list to the store in advance with a specific pick up time and date, groceries will be ready to go through the checkout, reducing time spent in the store. The greater advance notice given, the better chance of order being filled completely.  Flyer Specials- Can save money by shopping weekly flyer specials  Accept Grocery Foundation vouchers- at participating stores (Food Basic, , Freshco, and Metro) Helps stretch your food budget.  Loss Leaders- Best price for milk, but located in the very back corner of the store  Store usually open every day, before school Cons:  Inconsistent pricing on some items  Large quantities require several days advance notice  Inconsistent supply  Vehicle required to pick up groceries  Unrefrigerated transportation

COSTCO Pros:  Large quantities available  Good Pricing  2% cash back at the end of the year for Executive Members - up to $750.00. Need to spend at least $5,500.00 to earn enough cash back to pay the $110 membership cost.  Store open every day Cons:  Membership required- cannot be purchased through MCYS funding. Business Membership cost is $55, Executive Membership cost is $110 annually

SWISH Pros:  Delivery to schools  Large quantities of disposables  Credit terms available  Products usually more cost effective than the generic store brand found at grocery stores Cons:  Some products more expensive than found at National Grocers  Case sizes are large  Limited selection  $100.00 minimum order for free delivery within city limits, otherwise a $5.00 fuel surcharge applies. $150.00 minimum order for outside Sudbury city limits, otherwise a $10.00 fuel surcharge applies

NOTE: Lead Agencies must pre-approve local decisions to source produce directly from farms. Farms should be certified ( GAP or Safe Quality Food) or adhere to food safety best practices as defined by the 2014 Ministry Program Guidelines, Appendix C. Please check with the Food and Logistics Coordinator at 705- 671-1941 ext 235 to confirm approval prior to making any direct farm purchases. A list of approved local farms will be forthcoming.
