February 2020 Update from U.S. Eventing Performance Director Erik Duvander
February 2020 Update from U.S. Eventing Performance Director Erik Duvander The Olympic year of 2020 has now arrived and our team is firstly working towards our remaining selection trials – Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5*-L, Badminton Horse Trials CCI5*-L and Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event CCI4*-L – and our preparation is well on its way. I arrived in the U.S. in the first week of January to travel around to our athletes to work with them and go through their submitted Individual Performance Plan (IPP). I am very pleased to see how well all the horses have come out of the previous season, and after a break they are all looking stronger and more mature. The athletes are very focused and working on the areas of improvement as outlined in their IPP. We have 13 athletes and 15 horses on our Elite and Pre-Elite training list, but I have also worked with a few athletes outside this list who are also Olympic possibilities. It is a very open book as to who will go to Tokyo, so it is up to the athletes to make sure they use every available day to make their improvements and put on the best performance at the selection trials. In mid-January, Tamie Smith, Frankie Thieriot Stutes and I went to Coachella Valley, California to put on an exhibition for our team sponsor, Land Rover, at their 4xFAR Festival. Land Rover turned the launch of their new vehicles into a two-day experiential event with live music and 35 daily hosted events and workshops. -

Badminton Horse Trials but We Have Lovely Photos to Remind You of the Thrills of the Competition
Keeping In Touch No. 9 14 May 2020 Welcome to “Keeping in Touch No. 9! The sun is still mostly shining on us when we go for our walks or into our gardens but it is a bit chillier – brrrr! But life goes on and we have people you know Shouting Out to you this week. One of the many things we have missed this year is Badminton Horse Trials but we have lovely photos to remind you of the thrills of the competition. Did you know that Eventing as a sport was started in Gloucestershire? That was at Badminton in 1949. Pete suggested we look at yoga as a way of keeping us supple for when we get to ride again, and there is training for those Proficiency Tests which you can do online. That will help you pass them when it’s your turn! So with a Word Search and a Quiz on Badminton, and an appeal for you to nominate CRDA for a charity grant there are things you can do to pass the time, all in this newsletter. And for those who are thinking of entering the Regional Art and Writing Competition now is the time to get those entries sent off. The entry form is at the bottom of this newsletter. Would be great if there was a CRDA member among the prizewinners, how we’d cheer! s (Fergus appears by kind permission of Jean Abernethy – you can follow him here www.FergusTheHorse.com) v2 14 May 2020 Did you know… Badminton Horse Trials The first week in May means just one thing to so many horsey people – Badminton Horse Trials. -
Literature Review
An Analysis of Conformation and Performance Variables in Potential Three Day Event Horses in Ireland Name Soraya Morscher Supervisor Professor Sean Arkins Submitted in part fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the Masters of Science (Equine Science) at the University of Limerick, October 2010 Abstract Eventing is the ultimate test of speed, endurance, obedience and athleticism and the importance of such qualities in horses date back to cavalry times where such attributes were deciding factors in wars. The Irish Sport Horse is the leading studbook for eventing for the last 15 years (WBFSH, 2009). In order to keep the Irish Sport Horse at the top of this sport, talented animals have to be identified early. To identify elite horses early, studbooks all over the world employ conformation assessment as an indicator for pre-selection and suitability. Since the new format of eventing was introduced, opinions on what type of horse is suitable for the sport are divided. Currently in Ireland, selection of young event horses is not carried out by any of the studbooks. The Future Event Horse League (FEHL) offers owners of potential event horses a competition to test their abilities. The league is run in a different format to eventing, and as part of the competitions, judges score the potential of the horse for this particular sport. One objective of this study was to analyse selection methods for young event horses in Ireland. Data from competitions of FEHL were analysed in order to evaluate conformation and suitability of the horses that took part and the consistency of the judges scoring.
