"You have to start up front. We're just glad to put together a win." Kinser, who started in the front row, grabbed the lead on the second lap and held that position to the finish of the $8,200-to-win, 25-lap event. It was Kinser's seventh WoO feature event win of the season and 30th of his career here at the Marion County Fairgrounds. The event, which went non-stop, saw Sammy Swindell take second on the dry slick track after a pass of Dave Blaney in lapped traffic during the late stages of the race. Blaney placed third after the race-long battle with Swindell. Doug Wolfgang was fourth and Mark Kinser trailed closely for fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Jeff Swindell, Stevie Smith, Randy Smith, Craig Keel and Joe Gaerte. Qualifying heats were won by Mark Kinser, Jeff Swindell, Johnny Herrera and Danny Young. Archie Ergenbright captured the C feature and Tim Monson led four drivers into the finale with a win in the B feature. Doug Wolfgang led flag to flag in the rain-cancelled Friday preliminary feature event, which was held Saturday after time trials. Wolfgang out-dragged Sammy Swindell to the flag stand to begin the race and the duo battled for the top spot for the remainder of the $3,500-to-win event. In victory lane, Wolfgang said he "hit the lapped traffic perfectly in the final laps." At the checkered flag it was Wolfgang by five car lengths over Swindell, who was blowing heavy smoke from a leaking gasket. The win was the South Dakota native's 55th career feature event on the Knoxville oval. Steve Kinser trailed at a distant third, Blaney was fourth and Mark Kinser finished fifth. Jeff Swindell, Keel, S. Smith, Gaerte and Herrera completed the top 10 finishers. • The World of Outlaws Is a Haphazard Dirt
Doug The World of Outlaws is a haphazard dirt track sanctioning body for winged sprint car racing that came out of nowhere in the 1980s and still is running strongly today, led by everyone’s favorite American racing driver, Kyle Larson. When I was reporting on the WoO in the 1980s and 1990s,I was fortunate enough to watch four great drivers -- Steve Kinser, the bull; Sammy Swindell, the brat, Bobby Allen, the sorrowful flower child; and Doug Wolfgang, the underdog. I talked to all of them: Kinser was always reaching for another can of beer; Swindell always seemed hostile; Allen always seemed out of it; only Wolfgang made a decent interview. Then on April 3, 1992, in Kansas, at Lakeside Speedway, he suffered burns over better than 30 percent of his body in a flaming crash. The WoO carried few insurance papers on its drivers; Wolfgang himself carried little; and so, to save his own life and those of his wife and two teenage daughters, he sued for damages. Nobody is supposed to sue anybody else in racing, so this earned Wolfgang -- the winner 140 Wo0 matches, the five time champion of the Knoxville Nationals, plus his first place finishers in hundreds of minor races -- the disgrace of being a fallen racing driver. Exaggerating his limitations as an underdog winged sprint car driver, Wolfgang told me, “I’m losing my hair. I’ve got lines on my face. I’m worn out.” But when I asked him if he enjoyed being the underdog, he admitted, “Yes, I guess I’ve always liked playing the underdog in my racing.” This, in turn, had given him the mystique of a moody, unpredictable performer.

Kinser started on the outside of the front row and moved into the lead late on the first lap. Shortly after, on the fourth turn in lap number two, the yellow came out for a wreck involving Danny Smith and Doug Wolfgang. Wolfgang had his brake-line cut during the mishap, sending his car into the infield, where unbelievably, he hit only one person, sending him to the hospital with a leg injury. Smith was shaken up in the mishap, and was taken to the hospital for treatment and released.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.
