Hello! My name is Elizabeth Speyer and I am the new Kugani classroom teacher. I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana in America, but have spent over 10 years living abroad in the U.K and . I have a Master’s Degree in Educational Publishing and have previously worked at publishing houses helping to edit and create their school curriculums; however, I truly fell in love with teaching when I moved to Osaka in 2015 to teach English at an International Preschool. My first classes were aged 2-3, which is such a fun age, as there are so many milestones and kids grow up so much during this time! After two wonderful years in the , I moved to Virginia in the United States, where I taught Pre-K children how to read. Introducing classic stories and helping my students reach their full potential was a wonderful experience I will always cherish. I am so excited to join the CDC team here at OIST. I love teaching through songs, movement and story time and am really looking forward to applying my past experiences in the classroom to the CDC community. DAILY WALKS

Some of Okinawa's best views are visible from the OIST campus. The Kukuru class teachers take the babies on daily walks in their strollers. Together, they can view all the

Kukuru Class Kukuru different colors of the ocean and feel the fresh air on their faces. The teachers talk to the children about the nature they can see and hear. They stop and play in the soft grass. It is great to be raised in this wonderful environment. BABY SIGN LANGUAGE

Baby sign language basics offers multiple benefits for children:

-Reducing frustration

-Facilitating language development

-Encouraging gesturing, pointing

The Kukuru class teachers are using some baby sign language everyday. If you are interested in using baby sign language with your child please let us know and we can share a basic guide sheet that you can use to work together with your baby at home.

MOVE, MOVE, MOVE !

Class

Umusan

and Churasan In the toddler classrooms, we make sure to balance quiet and active times. The children love quiet activities, such as reading books and drawing. But, when the music comes on, they get

Kanasan, moving! The class stands up and starts dancing, jumping and stomping their feet along to the beat of the songs! Incorporating music and movement into early childhood education can help young children with their development, language growth , social interaction, gross motor skill and memory skills. MIYARABI CLASS FIELD TRIP

We had another fun awaited field trip on month of February! All the children were very excited for this fun trip to Kin Ta-mu Park in Kin Cho. Of course, the ride on OIST bus itself was the special occasion for some of our children and they were so excited to be on it. The children were singing, chatting, and just looking out the windows seen beautiful view of ocean saying things like; “Wow look at the beautiful ocean!”, acting like they were seen ocean for the first time. The ride to the park was less than 20 minutes but to Miyarabi Class Miyarabi the children, it must feel like much longer ride. As soon as we arrived at the park complex, they were looking through the window and anticipation got even bigger. They were exclaiming “Wow look! This park is so big! I cannot wait go up on the slide! The park was divided in age appropriate sections so that children were able to play on the slide structure and run freely through the well-kept grounds. Another main event of field trip was the “Obento/lunch time”, all the children were very excited to open their obento lunch and find what’s in it! They were comparing obento lunch with each other and enjoying their lunch time at beautiful park. SENSORY ACTIVITIES

The Shinka, Wakatida and Nujyumi children engaged in quite a few cooking sensory activities over the few months. They made muuchi, eho maki, and picked strawberries. Some of them even made pizza toast. The Tedako children have definitely earned their cooking badges! Their favorite food sensory activity was strawberry picking. The children used all 5 senses during their trip! They tasted and compared sweet strawberries and sour strawberries. They got to smelled the sweet aroma once they entered the picking area, looked up and down the many aisles and chose only ripe red strawberries. They picked the strawberries, removed the tops, and listened and conversed with one another about the taste, size, and color of the delicious strawberries. Now that's what we call a full sensory experience! Going on this field trip was also a great opportunity to teach the children about plants. Rather than just talk about the life cycle in the classroom and show pictures, we were able to Shinka, Wakatida, and Nujyumi and Wakatida, Shinka, show the children all the different stages of the strawberry life cycle. We talked about the strawberries starting from tiny flowers, turned into small green fruit, and grew into big red juicy strawberries that we could eat! We even talked about the importance of the bees too, since there were so many buzzing around. The kids filed their brains with new information and their stomachs with delicious strawberries.
