The month begins with the nine saddest days on the Jewish calendar, culminating with Tisha B’Av, the infamous date on which both Battie Mikdash were destroyed, and many other tragedies befell our people throughout our long and painful Galut odyssey, including the formal launch of the Spanish Inquisition, and the start of WWI which led to WWII and to the Holocaust. But Menachem-Av (“comforting father”) is also the month in which we are can - and hopefully, finally - will be consoled and comforted for our long-suffering exile. With so many potential catastrophes looming: the nuclear “deal” between the US and Iran, the cancerous contagion of ISIS, and the insanely vicious Islamist violence near and within our beloved Israel, it is now most timely to invoke a powerful new upsurge of Hashem’s blessings and protective, comforting energy by joining us for the traditional early morning communal recitation of Tehillim. Everyone’s also invited to our Monthly Mivarchim Farbrengen which begins a bit later than usual at 3 pm following the special Shabbaton Luncheon Event with our IDF heroes. A Great Congregational Embrace – Our exceptional group of Tzuk Eitan IDF Heroes, who were mercilessly attacked by the murderous Hamas ‘tunnel terrorists’, are with us in Thornhill for some encouraging respite from their long and painful rehabilitation process. They are, Baruch Hashem, enjoying the journey of a lifetime loaded with deserving accolades, acclaim and fun activities since their arrival on July 7. Their courage on the battlefield and throughout the severe pain and debilitating injuries they experienced is truly inspiring, and the strength of their character is truly extraordinary. We’re grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation to them. They risked their lives for us, and we have the chance to reciprocate by showing them that their sacrifices are deeply cherished. Their presence in Shul this Shabbat will be touching and inspiring for our entire community. Please join us on this Shabbat so that we can all give them the large communal embrace which they so richly deserve. We’re grateful to Chabad of Israel’s Terror Victims Project for working with us to facilitate this incredible journey and program. More “Bling” to our Raffling! – Youth Minyan begins this Shabbat at 9:30 am sharp. Note: win an extra THREE raffle tickets for being on time. This week we’ll also be raffling off extra prizes! Rack up your points and increase your chance to win! Even in the slow summer season, Avrumi tops his game in leading this wonderful weekly program. Parents! Remember, that this is your special opportunity to develop your child’s Yiddishkeit by getting involved in their Tefillah (prayer experience) and their pursuit of meaningful Torah knowledge. The 5,000 Year Old Google Map – Children’s Shabbat Program is in full swing beginning at 10:30 am for our funtastic circle time, davening, Parsha learning, snack, and games! This week’s Parsha is called Pinchas. It describes our ancient Israelite ancestors preparing to inherit the cherished Holy Land of Eretz Yisrael. The Torah’s map of Israel tells where the various tribes would live in their special territory including the holy city of Hebron and the surrounding Judean Hills. Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu to supervise the sharing of our ancestral homeland by a lottery that determines where each tribe belongs. Moshe – as instructed by G-d – appoints Yehoshua as his successor, and he alone will finally lead the Jewish people into the Promised Land. The special holiday Korbanot (offerings) in the Beit HaMikdash correspond to Shacharit, Mincha and the Musaf Amida in modern times. We'll play Crown Yehoshua, Who is Moshe? and Musaf offering Bingo. Mazal Tov to the Shabbat Mensch of the Week Shmuel Krybus. Torah Travels Home – After its extraordinary journey, the very special new is coming home! Our dear Shul members, Jack & Jodi Ganz commissioned it to honour the memory of Jack’s beloved parents, Hershel & Rachmie Ganz Z’L. This Torah Journey started at the Kotel on Reb Hershel’s yahrzeit. Due to last summer’s Tzuk Eitan Gaza War, the dedication expanded to include the memories of the three kidnapped students and the fallen IDF soldiers HY’D. During the year, the Torah parchments travelled throughout Israel; portions were written in all of Israel's Holy Cities: Yerushalayim, Chevron, Teveria and Tzfat and letters were individually inscribed by people from all walks of life, especially seriously wounded soldiers still in hospital struggling with painful rehabilitation; in Har-Nof, families of the Kedoshim also participated. Finally, after crossing the Atlantic, more holy letters were inscribed near the Rebbe’s Ohel and at the exact spot in 770 where the Rebbe used to distribute dollars and bless all who came to see him. This Motzai Shabbat, (Saturday night), everyone is invited to participate in the writing of this extraordinary Torah scroll. This program will begin after the regular Maariv evening services (at about 10 pm) with Havdallah, followed by the letter writing. Melava Malka refreshments will be served. Don't miss this chance to welcome home a historic and very well-travelled Sefer Torah!

Torah Fans & Fanfare! – According to sacred Torah traditions ( Yisrael) this Sunday, Tammuz 25/July 12 is considered an actual Yom Tov for the members of our community with the Tachnun (daily penitential prayers) omitted from the Davening. It’s considered appropriate to wear our “Shabbos best” and it’s a Mitzvah to participate in the great joy of a Siyum (completion of) & Hachnasat (ushering-in, dedication ceremony of a) Sefer Torah! On behalf of our entire congregation, we extend a very warm Mazal Tov to Jack and Jodi Ganz and their entire family on this momentous occasion. The entire community is invited to attend and joyously participate. At 12pm noon, the final letters of the Torah will be written in the Ganz home at 219 Glenforest Drive. At 1 pm, the Torah will be escorted with a traditionally great parade of honour and fanfare along Flamingo Road to our Shul for a Dedication Ceremony that will include exuberant Hakafot – singing, dancing and rejoicing!

Lest We Forget – Our brand new Sefer Torah will serve as a permanent memorial for the three kidnapped Yeshiva students, the 66 IDF soldiers, four civilian casualties, and the four Kedoshim of Har Nof. A beautiful mantel cover bearing the individual names of each soldier tragically killed last summer will adorn this Sefer Torah. The letters and mantel will serve as a living testament to these individuals from a grateful nation: Am Yisrael. Following the joyous installation of the Torah into our uniquely embellished Main Sanctuary Aron Kodesh, the entire community is invited to stay for a celebratory Seudat Mitzvah in our grand Ballroom. Amazingly, many of the wounded warriors who are here with us actually participated in penning letters while recovering in hospital! Join us from 2 to 4 pm, and participate in this joyous, yet sacred event that honours the completion and dedication of this distinguished Torah Scroll and the sacred memories of Am Yisrael’s Kedoshim! We look forward to sharing the joy with you!

A ‘No Fare’ Farewell – Monday, July 13 at 7:30 pm, the entire community is invited to join us for special farewell party for our beloved soldiers before they return to Israel. This special dessert reception will be the final wrap-up of an incredible and unforgettable week of events that will give each of us the chance to bid our Tzuk Eitan IDF Heroes farewell. Please join us to help give them the heroes’ send-off they deserve! The event is being hosted and sponsored by Dr. Danny Sapir and Bryna Kaplan and family at their home: 126 Renaissance Court, Thornhill. There’s no cost to attend, however we’d appreciate it if you could RSVP to [email protected] or phone us at extension 21 no later than 10 am Monday morning so that our hosts can adequately prepare for this event.

Ancient Jerusalem - Sinking in a Swamp of Immorality – All the women of our community are invited to join us Monday morning at 10:30 am for our weekly Women's . We continue the Redemption Song Series following along the text of Megillat Eicha or Jeremiah’s Lamentations dynamically delivered by our very own Rabbi Kaplan. This week, we’ll learn about ancient Jerusalem’s plummeting moral standards as our ancestors sank into a swamp of spiritual decadence, sinfulness and pollution that coated the people onto the very “hems of their garments.” The Scripture continues to attribute the suffering detailed in the first verses to divine retribution for our nation’s moral and spiritual failings. But rather than depressing us, we can actually be inspired by properly studying these verses! The entire set of 7 lessons is now available on-demand. Visit our website to watch, listen and learn!

This Week: Kitchen Rules – Join us Tuesday July 7, 8:30 pm for Part II of our new Ten-Part Series: Mitzvah Methodology. This week, we’ll be focusing on the Rebbe’s Famous Mitzvah Campaign to inspire as many as possible to start eating smart spiritually by Keeping Kosher. Observance of this Mitzvah includes a whole array of specific kitchen rules and regulations uniquely connected to this week’s Torah portion. We’ll delve into why the Rebbe may have chosen this particular Mitzvah, and how “Keeping Kosher” enables us to elevate the food we eat when it connects us to the inner energy generated to perform more mitzvot!

Chanukah in July: Part II – At our weekly Talmud Study class on Thursday at 8:30 pm, we’ll continue to explore the unique nature of the Mitzvah of kindling Menorah lights on Chanukah. We’ll delve into the Halachik requirement of kindling the Menorah as we try to shed light on the nature of this extraordinarily extroverted Mitzvah. We’ll see the positive message it conveys beyond the Jewish Festival of Lights in a way that ignites our Jewish pride and ethos all year long. December may be months away, but you’ll be surprised to discover how relevant and encouraging these lessons and ideas can be for us especially this month while we observe the saddest days on the Jewish calendar.

Coming Home to the Temple Mount – During this period on the Jewish calendar, we sadly commemorate the destruction of both Ba'atie Mikdash (Holy Temples) in ancient Jerusalem and the resulting Galut - exile both physical and spiritual, from which we still suffer today. Contemplating this should intensify our yearning for the redemption through Moshiach who will immediately ensure that G-d's chosen home, the Beit HaMikdash will be rebuilt. The Rebbe urged us to dedicate these days to study and concentrate on the topic of the Beit HaMikdash. Accordingly, Rabbi Kaplan has been teaching a brief class about the Beit HaMikdash from the ’ text, Hilchot Beit HaBechira, each day just before Mincha and he will continue this after Tisha B’av. Join us any or every day at 7:30 pm sharp for this special timely learning just before regular afternoon services.

Take Me To Your Cleaner – Thursday evening, July 16, is Rosh Chodesh Menachem-Av when the nine saddest days on the Jewish calendar begin at sundown. This Pre-Tisha B’Av period of mourning for the war crime destruction of the Beit HaMikdash, Tzion & Yerushalayim has a special set of observances that include refraining from the following: eating meat, drinking wine (except on this and next Shabbat), and non-essential cleaning, laundering or ironing. Swimming, boating, pleasure bathing, and pleasure trips and activities are also off-limits. So instead of bringing your suit to the cleaners, now is the perfect time for us to launder the “garments” of our souls by cleansing ourselves of inappropriate thoughts, speech and deeds. Visit our website to learn more about the Halachot & Minhagim connected to this time of the year and the motifs of positive spiritual and redemptive energy resonating for us during this special time!

A Heart-Breaking Documentary – In the summer of 2001, two Jewish teenagers were hiking near their homes in the ancient heartland of Israel when they were stoned to death by Palestinian terrorists. A few months later, Daniel Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, was kidnapped and murdered in Karachi, Pakistan; his last words: "My father's Jewish, my mother's Jewish, I'm Jewish." My Whole Broken Heart is a well-produced and emotionally-gripping 45-minute film featuring the heart-wrenching stories of valiant parents whose children’s lives were snatched away by terrorists; it spotlights the parents’ inspiring responses to their horrific experiences. The documentary also follows the lives of two of the youngest survivors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald who emerged from the darkness but transformed the Jewish landscape. The film is framed around the Rebbe's response to the 1956 terror attack in Kfar Chabad that claimed lives of five students, and features interviews with Daniel’s parents, Ruth and Judea Pearl; Sherri Mandel, mother of Kobi Mandell; former Israeli Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, and Rabbi Nissan Mangel. The screening of the film will follow afternoon Mincha services on the saddest day of the year, Tisha B’ Av (the 9th Day of Av), Sunday July 26. Details to follow.
