KC’s remaining opponents include the Indians (3+ suspended game), Detroit (5), Boston (4) and the White Sox (7)...meanwhile, aside from the five with the Royals, Detroit has Cleveland (3), Minnesota (7) and the White Sox (3). THE TERRIFIC TRIO--Much of Kansas City’s success this year can be traced to the seventh, eighth and ninth innings thanks to the trio of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland, respectively...Herrera and Davis each worked on Sunday in Yankee Stadium while Holland was given another day to rest a tight triceps...Davis responded over the weekend with his first two saves as a professional...the trio has combined to allow just 3 earned runs in 72.0 innings in this big league best 31-12 span that began on July 22 for a 0.38 ERA while fanning 78 and holding the opponents to a collective .152 average (37-for-244)...Herrera has a streak of 27.2 consecutive scoreless frames alive, which spans his last 28 outings...the only pitcher in baseball with a longer active streak is Davis, who is in the midst of a 32-appearance streak with 29.2-straight shutout innings...Holland is the only one of the three to be scored upon, allowing 3 earned runs in 21.2 innings (1.25 ERA) since July 22, but has converted 17 of his last 18 save chances, including his 16th consecutive conversion last Wednesday night for his 42nd rescue. MAGIC NUMBER DIDN’T PAY OFF--For one of the few times in 2014, the Royals plated at least four runs, but even those weren’t enough in the 9-5 loss here yesterday...Kansas City is now 62-10 when scoring at least four runs and a still impressive 126-24 when doing so since the start of the 2013 season...conversely, when held to three or fewer, the Royals are just 17-53 this season. DAVIS AMONG BASEBALL’S ELITE--Wade Davis had to step in for closer Greg Holland over the weekend in New York, but that didn’t phase the freshly-turned 29-year old (his birthday was Sunday) as he locked down the first two saves of his professional career on Friday and Sunday...he possesses the Majors’ longest scoreless inning streak at 29.2, while his season ERA of 0.71 is tops in the Majors among all hurlers who have thrown at least 40.0 innings...the last run Wade allowed was on June 25th and has been the lone run surrendered in his last 51.0 innings for a 0.18 ERA dating back to April 26...since giving up two earned runs on April 5, Wade has allowed only two runs over his last 56 outings (58.0 innings) for a 0.31 ERA, while fanning 91...he opened the year going almost four full months without allowing an extra-base hit, but Minnesota’s Kurt Suzuki spoiled the streak with a double on July 31.
