News & Tech asked a Ometu to discuss how YouTube News works with newspapers.

News & Tech: How do I get started with YouTube? Ometu: First, we recommend you understand what news you are going to cover. If you cover a specific town, region, or subject matter, then make sure you set up your YouTube channel to reflect that so you can attract an audience interested in the news topics you cover. Once you have a feeling for what your mission and audience on YouTube should be the most important thing is to start posting consistently. Reg- ular newsworthy content on a daily, weekly, or bi-weekly basis is pivotal to establishing yourself on YouTube. Once you have enough feedback from posting regularly, that’s when you can take advantage of YouTube Analytics to enhance engagement and discovery for your videos.

responding to positive and conversation-moving comments quickly. News & Tech: How do I monetize YouTube on my website? Ometu: First make sure the video is not set to private and that it has embedding enabled. YouTube videos that you publish on your website can share in the revenue generated by your video with the same revenue split we offer on YouTube.com or the YouTube app. If you plan on posting lots or all of your YouTube-published videos to your website or app, do let us know through our support site, and we can work with you on ways to further optimize your embedded videos for monetization.

News & Tech: What are your overall thoughts for a successful You- Tube operation for a local newspaper? Ometu: As I mentioned earlier, consistency is the most impor- tant thing. MARC... MY WORDS Thank God we’re

not China BY MARC WILSON COLUMNIST u

How’d you like to live in a country where Donald J. Trump—or whoever the president is—can instantly fire any reporter, editor or newscaster who displeases him? I just spent a couple of weeks in China, and that’s exactly the media situation in the People’s Republic of China. The state-owned media—there are very few other kinds of media—completely kowtow to the party and especially to Communist Party Secretary/ President Xi Jinping. They have no choice. Our tour took us to many of the top tourist attractions in China. In Beijing, we saw the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall of China and Temple of the Sun. In Tibet, “the Roof of the World” in a valley of the Himalayas, we went to the Potala Palace, and the Jokhang Temple, and other temples once occupied by the Dalai Lama. We walked the beautiful streets of Lhasa that are heavily patrolled by soldiers armed with sub-machine (630) 739 9600 guns. We saw the giant pandas near Chengdu and the terracotta soldiers near Xi’an. We took a cruise of the Guilin Li River, and we walked the Bund in Shanghai. We went through several exquisite museums, and stayed at luxury hotels. We took nine flights on Air China in 14 days. Everywhere we went, I picked up the ever-present, free English- language newspapers, such as the China Daily, Beijing today, Tibet Daily, and the Sichuan Daily. All were state-owned and full-throated propaganda organs of the Chinese Communist Party. All towed the party line. All had nothing but praise for the Communist Party and its Chairman/President Xi Jinping. All were “good news” organs of the government. If you try to find non-government-produced news while in China, you are out of luck. The government/Communist Party blocks many important tools on the Internet, including Google and Facebook. Eavesdropping and censorship are said to be widespread, and all locals were careful about what they told us, visiting Americans. An essay in ChinaFile by Jessica Batke and Oliver Melton said, in part: “China’s Party-state is extremely successful at controlling infor- mation. Even the most basic insights into policy deliberations and processes, leaders’ intentions and views, and elite dynamics are filters through a sophisticated propaganda and censorship regime.” When I asked our guides about the ever-present presence of armed military troops (especially in Tibet, which has an active out- lawed separatist movement), their standard answer was: “Yes, doesn’t it make you feel safe?” No. Too many of the soldiers looked like teenagers in helmets and AH Tensor International LLC flack-jackets with fingers on the triggers of semi-automatic weapons. 10330 Argonne Woods Dr. Suite 200 Every newspaper I read touted the economic successes of China Woodridge, IL 60517 under the Communist Party, especially the fact that some 80 million Phone: (630) 739 9600 www.ustensor.com Chinese had been moved out of extreme poverty in the last five years. cars – Mercedes, Porsches, Audis, Jaguars, Maseratis, BMWs, Aston Martins, plus thousands of new but less-expensive vehicles. The news- papers referred to it as the “China Miracle.” There is no dissent, and the people know not to complain. “Many Chinese scab over festering wounds inflicted by the Chinese Communist Party’s policies with niceties about economic development and cultural sites,” Isaac Stone Fish of the L.A. Times recently wrote. Almost everywhere, we saw young Chinese girls taking non-stop “selfie” photos. At almost every tourist site, we saw young Chinese "# !# women having photos taken by a professional photographers. The " women posed as dramatically as they could. They tried to dress in the "# # latest Western fashions. The newspapers hinted that the Communist Party was starting to # "" criticize the widespread hedonism, and “Western influences.” # ! We saw signs of American and other foreign companies doing ex- " tensive business in China. The government-owned newspapers stated "# that the Communist Party was soon going to demand more ownership and board seats on foreign-owned businesses. An anti-corruption campaign is under way that has allowed the """" Communist Party to purge wrong-thinking officials and frighten some entrepreneurs. Foreign journalists consistently comment that it’s very difficult to discern the inner workings of the Chinese Communist Party, and hence the government of China. “While eliminating any source of opposition, (President) Xi has also been attentive to building popular support domestically, through a radical change in propaganda methods and what the Party stills refers to as ‘thought work’: a combination of heightened ideological controls over the media (‘whose middle names should be “Communist Party”’ he famously quipped), over universities (instructed to ‘combat pernicious ideas such as so-called judicial independence and universal values’), and unmatched censorship of the Internet (which Chinese ne- tizens now deride as having become a ‘Chinese intranet’),” wrote China watcher Nicholas Bequelin. Last December, Xi ordered the country’s universities to “adhere to the correct political orientation.” Speaking at a conference on ideology and politics in China’s colleges, he stressed that schools must uphold the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership and “guide the broad mass- es of teachers and students to be strong believers” in Marxist theories and socialist core values. Professors have no choice to obey or be dismissed (or worse). Neither do Chinese journalists. China is now the second biggest economy in the world, behind the . China is deploying an expansive foreign policy, and greatly increasing military spending. The Communist Party is demand- ing more “unity of thought” among its members and non-members. Such unity – including a goose-stepping media and educational system – may help China to continue advance economically in the short run. We can all celebrate millions being helped out of extreme poverty. But I came back from China with a greater-than-ever appreciation of our diverse, independent media, our Bill of Rights, and the pluralism that will continue to make us the greatest country in the world. I’m glad Donald Trump can tweet all he wants, just so long as he can’t fire any journalist or professor who displeases him. p
