    September 24 – October 3, 2021 Dear Alumni and Friends, We are pleased to announce this unusual and exclusive journey, tailored especially for Vanderbilt Alumni, exploring the wonderful yet largely “undiscovered” treasures of Italy’s Far South. The regions of Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria are rich in history and natural beauty, with ancient The trulli of Alberobello cities that feature glorious architecture, important archaeological remains, and bucolic villages that have changed little through the centuries. Known in antiquity as Magna Graecia (“Greater Greece”), this part of Italy, along with Sicily, is an area that attracted Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, and others for its fertile land and the potential for trade. We begin our travels in Puglia, in the heel of Italy’s boot, and explore the incredible village of Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage site that features over 1,500 ancient trulli buildings. In the neighboring region of Basilicata, we visit another UNESCO site in Matera’s old town called the Sassi. Its labyrinth of cave houses includes frescoed churches and chapels carved out of limestone rock. In Calabria, the toe of the Italian boot, we tour ancient hilltop villages including Rossano, Gerace, and Santa Severina, which house treasures in their cathedrals and other sites revealing Calabria’s long rich history. We conclude in Reggio di Calabria, which guards the Strait of Messina, the narrow waterway that separates Gerace mainland Italy from Sicily. The Reggio Emilia educational experience Abstract The Convention on the Rights of the Child, approved by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 20 November 1989, states in Article 2 that “States Parties shall respect and ensure the rights set forth in the present Convention to each child within their jurisdiction without discrimination of any kind, irrespective of the child’s or his or her parent’s or legal guardian’s race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status.” Therefore, the child becomes a citizen from birth and is competent to learn from birth. Competent in learning, asking questions, seeking answers, and generating a culture of their own. By affirming the right to be recognised as a citizen of the present, competent, culture-generating, we affirm the strength and extraordinary potential of the child and their right to express it. Infant-toddler centres and preschools are excellent educational places, where to build the paradigm of care and community for the child as citizen. Not all-encompassing places for education, but essential. They help to process, rework and update childhood data, to define childhood and to be defined by them and to define societies. It is not just the care of the child, it is the child’s culture, it is the child’s look at the world, their generative whys.

    A YOUth Guide to Bari A YOUth Guide to Bari was cooperatively drafted by a group of students from the University of Bari, Faculty of Modern Languages, as a follow-up activity to the Workshop WRITING FOR TOURISM organized at the University of Bari in May 2012. The workshop saw active participation and involvement of over 40 students working for the first time as guidebook writers under the supervision of travel journalist and guidebook author Duncan Garwood. The guide was written with a specific target audience in mind, namely Erasmus and other foreign students in Bari. It is therefore simple, concise, and – above all – it tries to take into account the information needs of students as ‘incidental’ tourists. The Failed Muslim Con- quest of Southern Italy Abstract: The establishment of an Aghlabid, then Fāṭimid-Kalbid dominion in Sicily had a deep impact not only on the island and on Mediterranean power constellations, but also on mainland Italy, especially in its Southern parts. Al- though the Peninsula was under continuous attack between the ninth and elev- enth centuries, all attempts to place it under submission failed on a long-term basis. Examining three examples of ‘hindered passages’, this article proposes some new considerations about the question of this missed Muslim conquest. Besides the numerous raids, the establishment of many military bases and Christian-Muslim agreements on the mainland during the Aghlabid and Fā- ṭimid-Kalbid period points to a targeted politics of conquest. Furthermore, the fragmentation of Southern Italy, often claimed as the main cause for the ‘Sara- cen’ destructions, could, on the contrary, also be seen as the main obstacle to Muslim expansion due to its many fortified centres.
