A double Paralympian and bronze medalist in the 100m butterfly at London 2012 Paralympics.
On 1 September 2012, Hassiem won a bronze medal in the 100 m butterfly, setting a new African record of 57.76 seconds in the final.

Took up athletics at age 13 at Vista Nova Primary School in Rondebosch, South Africa.
In 2005 he was awarded the best Junior Athlete for the physically challenged for the year 2004 by the Sportswriters Association for getting gold medals in 5 events and broke the SA records in these events.

At the National Championships for the Physically Disabled in Johannesburg, Mhlongo became the South African T44 champion in the 100m, 200m, long jump and high jump.
He surpassed the automatic qualification standards for the IPC World Championships in all four, officially breaking the South African (and African) records for the latter two.

Won a gold medal in the men's 100 metres – T37 event and a gold medal in the men's 200 metres – T37 event – Beijing 2008 Paralympics.
