4 55 About the Teen Entrepreneur Academy “We teach teens business because tomorrow’s futures start today.” Stephen Christensen

With today’s global economy creating new standards of employment, entrepreneurship training has not only become popular among high school students, but also essential for their careers. Business leaders have acknowledged the relevance and importance of entrepreneurship as an educational and economic remedy, making the need for youth entrepreneurship programs more evident than ever.

Concordia University Irvine’s innovative Teen Entrepreneur Academy (TEA) is a one-week international high school business summer “camp” held the second week of July. The Academy provides 75 teenagers (TeenPreneurs) with hands-on, real world training in “how to start a business.” It’s a total immersion into the world of entrepreneurship and business start-up. Living and learning on the campus in Irvine, TEA prepares the next generation of values-based entrepreneurs. It’s never too early to teach young people the principles of free enterprise, self-responsibility, best business practices and entrepreneurship. The program includes successful entrepreneurs and business faculty as guest speakers, group projects, a business plan competition ($1,000 prize) and field trips to local companies.

Founded in 2011 by the dean of the business school at Concordia, Stephen Christensen, the annual TEA program helps fill the void in entrepreneurship education often missing in high school. A 2011 Gallup survey of high schoolers in America found that 86% wished they had more business classes and seven out of 10 said they want to start their own business. Teenagers’ curiosity about the world around them, their natural creativity, willingness to take risks, and unbridled enthusiasm add up to the characteristics of our greatest entrepreneurs. Concordia’s TEA summer experience provides teens with new business insights necessary to develop and focus their entrepreneurial ambitions. It is another step in helping them climb that ladder of their own success and empowering them to confidential pursue their educational and career dreams.
