John is likely to have been born in 1861, or maybe 1862, based on census data and his date of death. So far no evidence of birth or baptism has been unearthed.

In the 1871 Census John, aged 9, was living in Beech Lane, , with his parents. He was born at Comberbach.

The 1881 Census tells us that he was aged 19 and still living at Beech Lane Weaverham. John was a gardener and his birthplace was given as Weaverham (unlikely).

John came to know Ann Clucas Cannon and they married on 15th April 1888. They married in Liverpool, at the Parish Church of St. Silas in Toxteth. At the time of the wedding John was living in Barnton and Ann gave her address as 205 Park Road, presumably in Liverpool.

The birth of an Ann Cannon was registered at Liverpool in 1865(Q2) but there is no verification that this is the above Ann Clucas Cannon. She seems to be missing from all Census data, as is her father.

Their only child, Margaret, was born on 22nd May 1889 and she was baptised at the Parish Church in Weaverham on 7th July 1889. JOHN HINDLEY (1861 – 1935 ) 1861JOHN/2

Unfortunately, Ann died a few weeks after the birth and she was buried at Weaverham Church on 13th July 1889.

A few months later there was further tragedy when Margaret died, aged 7 months, and she was buried at Barnton on 28th December 1889.

By the time of the 1891 Census John was a widower, living with his parents at Clay Croft House, Anderton. He was aged 29, a gardener, with his birthplace recorded as . (The village of Comberbach was in the Parish of Great Budworth).

JOHN HINDLEY (1861 – 1935 ) 1861JOHN/4

In the 1911 Census John is listed as a Domestic Gardener but at some point he became a gamekeeper, like his father, on the Marbury Estate.

On the 9th of March 1989, Philip Rayner remembered his life in Comberbach from 1906, 'there was a Shoemaker in Antrobus called Joseph Hindley who charged £2 for a pair of shoes stitched by hand. He lived at Hammersmith Cottages. John Hindley lived at Gamekeepers Cottage in Comberbach. He was the Gamekeeper at Marbury Hall'. see - http://comberbach-history.blogspot.com/2007/09/philip-rayner-remembers-life- in.html

Gamekeepers Cottage, Comberbach is on Marbury Road. Travelling from the now demolished Marbury Hall to Comberbach it is on the right, beyond the first house (Marbury Cottage), and opposite the road, “Broadacre”.

Gamekeepers Cottage, Comberbach is on the left of the semi-detached houses. John lived here around the years 1910-1921. Some idea of what the house might have looked like in the 1910s can be seen in the semi on the right.

Three of John’s brothers and one sister had separately all emigrated to Canada. Oswald went first (in 1910), then Frederick (in 1911), Charles (in 1913) and Rose (in 1920). They lived together in the area of Nelson, British Columbia.

World War 1 then occupied most people from 1914-1918. After the Great War John must have decided to join his brothers and sister in British Columbia. He sailed from Liverpool to St. John, New Brunswick and was granted immigration status on 29th March 1921.

On 26th January 1921 John filled in a passenger declaration which is shown below. John was aged 59, widowed, and born at Comberbach. His destination was the home of his brother F.W. Hindley at Clay Croft, Harrop, B.C., Nelson CPR. His intended occupation was “Farmer”. (Clay Croft was one of their addresses in (see 1901 Census). Were they granted land and started farming from scratch or did they alter the farm name, assuming they lived on a farm?).

At home in Great Britain were a brother (Joseph) who became a gamekeeper on Anglesey; and two sisters (Lois who died in May 1921, and Margaret who eventually emigrated to Canada in 1947). JOHN HINDLEY (1861 – 1935 ) 1861JOHN/6
