COVID-19 Vaccination: Programme update 5 March 2021

Overview Our ambition is to protect our and Vale population as quickly as possible with vaccination for Covid-19. A vaccination programme on such a large scale requires a multi-faceted approach and a mixed model of delivery. The model in Cardiff and Vale includes mobile teams, mass vaccination centres, GP Practices and healthcare ‘hubs’.

Operational Delivery:

To date we have delivered 158,753 vaccines in Cardiff and the Vale of which is a third of our total adult population. 24,001 of these vaccines are second doses. Mass vaccination centres:

We have acquired another MVC which is based on the old Toys R Us site. Work is currently taking place to turn the site into a centre to deliver vaccinations to people in Cardiff and the . We anticipate the site being ready to deliver vaccines from the end of March but will keep you updated with progress. We are also exploring options to increase vaccination capacity in Western Vale and are currently discussing plans with GPs and pharmacists in the area. We will keep you updated as this progresses.

Mobile Vaccination Teams

Our Mobile Teams are currently delivering second doses to Care Homes across Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan with a plan to complete these by 22 March. There may be occasions where we cannot go into a Care Home if they are in an outbreak situation but we will continually monitor these and enter when it is safe to do so. We are also working through a plan to use the mobile teams to vaccinate our vulnerable communities including people who are homeless, asylum seekers and the traveller community. Plans are to deliver first doses between 22nd March and 12 April.

GP practices:

Our GP Practices are continuing to book in priority group 5 (aged 65-69) to receive their vaccine and have completed 71% of this group so far. Remaining people in this age group will receive their first doses given by 22 March.

A round up of our Primary Care support is available on our website Community Pharmacies

Community Pharmacies will be undertaking training to deliver vaccines to unpaid carers, our Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities to increase access and capacity in the Western Vale.

Unpaid Carers

Unpaid Carers: unpaid carers we are aware of are currently being invited to a Mass Vaccination Centre. We have now launched an online form for people to complete if they feel they fall under this cohort. Once the form is completed you will be offered an appointment at an MVC or a community pharmacy. If you need help completing the form you can call 01446 729592
