Jas Enjoys Life in Birchip

Jasleen (Jas) Kaur recently graduated from La Trobe University, Shepparton Campus, with a Bachelor of Nursing, and is now undertaking her graduate year with East Wimmera Health Service and Ballarat Base Hospital. Coming from India, Jas chose the Shepparton Campus of La Trobe University for the relaxed lifestyle of the regions and better post-study opportu- nities, and it is pleasing she has now chosen to commence her nursing career in the country. Jas has been undertaking her graduate year at the Birchip Campus of East Wim- mera Health Service, and this week she has commenced a three month placement at Bal- larat Base Hospital. “I knew nursing was my calling when visits to the hos- pital would leave me yearning to do more to help during my placements whilst I was an In- ternational student with La Trobe,’’ said Jas. Lockdown BULLETIN Unfortunately, Victorians are undergoing another lockdown. Whilst this causes angst amongst staff, students and parents, the staff at Birchip P-12 School have become quite pro ficient in delivering remote and online learning. • The joys of learning: Georgia Tynan and River Ryan. Buloke Youth Health Expo 2021 The Birchip P-12 School Year 10 group joined other Year 10 students from Donald, Charlton, Wycheproof and Sea Lake to participate in the Buloke Youth Health Expo this week. Activities and speakers organised for the day fo- cused on health and lifestyle issues faced by young people. Sonya Karras presented an engaging session on safety around alcohol and drugs. Dale Skinner, from the Black Dog Institute, passed on a valuable mes- sage on how to look after your mental health. Also in attendance throughout the day were youth workers from Headspace Horsham and Swan Hill, and former AFL footballer Tom Boyd. The last session was an informative panel discus- sion, “You can ask that”, where students anony- mously asked panel members a range of health-related questions around the topics of sexual health, respectful relationships, Safe Schools and the topic of consent. Sonya then spoke to the year eleven and twelve students at Birchip P-12 school. Here is a reflection on her presentation by one of our Year 12 students: On May 25, Sonia Karras talked to us about how to stay safe when partying. Throughout her talk, Sonia was very engaging and related to the students, meaning they took many messages from her speech home. Some of these messages were, making sure you had a plan to get home safely before partying, and how to look after your mate if they had partied too hard. One thing Sonia stressed was not getting in a car AGED 50 with a drunk driver, or a driver under the influence of drugs. She even gave many excuses for students to use to get out of those situations, such as saying you are going to vomit or you have to go to the bath- room. AND OVER? As a class, they listed how the spaghetti went from being stiff, hard, strong and broken easily, to wiggly, slippery, soft and slimy. Students used the cooked spaghetti to create pic- tures in response to a poem, and labell ed their draw- ings from the list of descriptors. They worked in pairs to build towers from the un- cooked spaghetti, holding the sticks together with marshmallows. There were many good ideas from students on how to make their towers stay up, in- cluding using triangles and bracing the pieces. Equally impressive was the restraint shown by the students in not eating any marshmallows until the end of class. Authorised by the Australian Government, Canberra.
