Dear Parishioners, Friends and Visitors,

Last Sunday in the gospel, showed his disciples that he can command the forces of nature. He calmed the storm. This Sunday's gospel show he has power over sickness and death.

Not unlike the disciples in last Sunday's gospel, who in the face of the storm became overwhelmed by fear, in the face of sickness and death, it is easy to lose hope. Some- times things happen to us and we might think our life seems hopeless.

It must have seemed hopeless to Jairus whose daughter was dying and it must have seemed hopeless to the woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years and who had ex- hausted all her money seeking cures.

Without Jesus, yes, it is hopeless. With faith in Jesus miracles can happen. If we rely on Jesus when things seem hopeless, he can solve the problem for us.

Our first reading from the book of Wisdom explains that death was not part of God's plan for humans but that because of sin, death entered the world. God however has a plan of life for his people: eternal life in Christ. And we see in the gospel story the pow- er of Jesus over sickness and even over death itself.

These healings came about because of the faith of those seeking help in hopeless situations.

Our Gospel writer, St. Mark, presents two healings. The episode begins with Jairus, a synagogue official, whose daughter is at the point of death. He seeks help from Jesus and Jesus agrees to go to cure his sick daughter. On the way, in the middle of the story we have another healing. This one happens without Jesus willing it. It happens because of the faith of the woman seeking help. We are told that she was suffering with a hemorrhage for 12 years. She had exhausted all her money and her condition was getting worse. But she did not give up hope. She pushed her way into the crowd with one idea in her mind: Jesus can cure me. And she reached out and touched his clothes. Then she was cured. Jesus became aware of the healing after; not before. And so he turns around and asks who touched him. Yet, as the disciples said, many people were touching him. But one person touched him with faith, the woman with the hemorrhage. She approaches Jesus and tells him the whole story. Jesus then remarks to her, "Your faith has saved you."

Faith. That is what the woman had. In spite of a seemingly hopeless situation, she had faith. And Jesus’ healing went out to her even though she did not ask him to be healed, but only in her silent determined way she approached him with faith. In fact, he did not know who it was and Jesus had to ask those gathered around him.

How strong the woman's faith was that she was convinced that if she could just touch the tassel of the robe of Jesus she would be healed! She saw Jesus as someone who was doing God's will and she wanted that also in her life.

As all this is happening, word comes from the house of Jairus that his daughter has died and he should not trouble Jesus anymore. Now that was really a hopeless situation! I am sure that even Jairus was expecting Jesus could get to his house before his daughter had died. But Jesus, sensing the hopelessness of the moment says to Jairus, "Do not be afraid; just have faith."

How reassuring are the words of Jesus, "Do not be afraid." Yes, fear can paralyze us. It can make us lose faith; hope and charity. Jesus says, "Just have faith." By the time they got to the house, people were already starting the funeral. Jesus asks why all the commotion and says, "She is not dead but asleep." And the gospel tells us: the people ridiculed him.

So he threw them all out of the house and took the father, mother and some of his disciples into the room where the girl was. He says to her, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." And she rose from death. And as proof that she was really alive and not just a ghost, Jesus says, "Give her something to eat."

Our gospel challenges us to have faith and deepen our faith. Also I think our gospel inspires us to turn to Jesus in our need. Like the elderly woman looking for healing, she had to push through the crowd to get to Jesus. She had the faith that Jesus could cure her, even by just touching his clothing. Truly she had faith; our gospel challenges us to have faith as well. And to put faith into action. She took the step to approach Jesus.

The story of Jairus challenges us that even in the face of death, Christ is present and can help us. Christ's words to Jairus are also his words to us, "Do not be afraid; just have faith."
