Nanaimo Ladysmith School Foundation Bursaries: Although the number of skaters was slightly down (5,636]) this We approved the funding for five $1,000 bursaries. year we have served over 18,000 skaters in Nanaimo in the last three years. Congratulations to our Lion Rob Azizullo, one of our newest members, who was awarded an International President’s Certif- icate of Appreciation for his initiative and contributions in these early days as a Nanaimo Lion.

Nanaimo Lions Free Swim: On April 1, we will begin our second annual Lions Free Swim at the Beban Pool. The season runs from April 1 to the end of June. In the first four swims this season we have hosted 725 swimmers, up from the 686 swimmers at this time last year. The Parks and Recreation Department has advertised the program in their Activity Guide and has placed posters in their recreation facilities. Lionesses are collecting toiletries/dental products/ make-up/spa foams/nail care items for Mother’s Day Boxes. Some 200 Chinese take-out boxes, stuffed with these items, wrapped in colourful tissue paper will be delivered to Women’s Transition House, Single Parent Resource Centre and Bridges for Women, to be handed out to their clients, single parent mums, for a special and personal treat on Mother’s Day. The Club has been doing this for over 15 years and the recip- ients are always most appreciative.

Lion PDG Alan Guy is spearheading the First Annual Lions Car Treasure Hunt and Quiz, Saturday May 26 at 1:45 pm starting at the Adachi Pavilion, Dinner Bay Park. While the event rings of the old car rallies some have experi- enced in the past, the rules are somewhat different! Come join in on the fun for $6 for car and driver, and $2 per passenger. Raffle ticket sales begin on Saturday May 5, 2018 and will continue until June 3. Prizes include a $500 shopping spree at Buy-Low Foods, two gift baskets and two gift cards. The event is being organized by Lion President Dianna Dalton and many Alberni Valley Lions have volunteered for several ticket sales slots. The funds raised by this event are used to assist local citizens who are in need of assistance with vision-related problems.

Once again this year several of our members, along with members from Co- mox Valley Lions and Baynes Sound Lions, distributed the Daffodil collection boxes for the Cancer Society to local businesses in our areas.

Pet Valu Dog Walk This event is planned for Sunday, May 27, 2018 starting at Bosley’s Pet Supply at the Pacific Rim Shopping Centre in Port Alberni. The Alberni Valley Lions have assisted with the organization of the event and they will be serving hot dogs as participants arrive back at Bosley’s.

We had 10 Lions attending the Conference this year along with four guests and everyone had a super time! Looking forward to Port Angeles in 2019!

14 MAY 2018 The Blurb the Community and Convention Centre in Parksville, BC and was attended by about 190 Lions and guests who enjoyed the Friday Night Fun Night and participated in a number of concurrent sessions on Saturday. Of those attending, twelve of our people (11 Lions and 1 guest) registered for the Conference. The Alberni Valley Lions Club was in charge of 50/50 sales at the event and was easily identifiable by their costumes and the red crabs on their headgear. A prize of $395 was won by Comox Valley Lion Lorraine Webber on Friday, and a prize of $370 was won by Port McNeill Lion Esther McLennan on Saturday. The sale of tickets raised International Director Joyce Middleton, The Alberni Valley Lion! $765 to assist Conference hosts, our featured guest speaker. the Parksville Lions Club, with Conference expenses. After a fine meal and much camaraderie at the Governor’s Banquet, the Conference concluded with a number of presentations by District Governor, Joyce Boyle, and a speech by International Director, Joyce Middleton. Pictures of the Conference, its attendees, its events and the fun night have been placed on the District 19 Facebook page and will be added to the District Website. The 2019 District 19-I Spring Conference will be held in Port Angeles, WA.

Sooke Lions Meeting on April 12th was held in different uniforms than usual to honour the 16 young hockey players and staff who lost their lives in the team bus crash in Humbolt Sask.

The 15th Annual Comfort Quilts “Quilt- ing Bee” hit some all time high records with over 200 volunteers (Lions members). They completed 42 quilts and 32 bags! Busy hands, friendship and laughter filled the hall as once again our community came together to help those facing life threatening ill- ness or injury.
