“Apostle of California” to be Canonized Sept. 23 The jewels known as the California missions continue to draw visitors of all faiths. Nine of California’s 21 missions were founded by a diminutive (5’2”) Franciscan friar from the island of Majorca, Fr. Junipero Serra. On September 23 Pope Francis will canonize Fr. Serra at the National Shrine of the , Washington, D.C. Coping with unimaginable hardships, Fr. Serra brought the Faith to northern Mexico and California. His motto was: “Always go forward and never turn back.” In 1750, at age 36, he sailed from Cadiz, Spain, to Vera Cruz, Mexico, then traveled on foot to the Shrine of in Mexico City to entrust himself entirely to Mary. After 17 years as a missionary in northern Mexico he was asked to go to Baja California. Despite asthma and an ulcerated foot, he traveled on foot and by mule. He brought a life-size statue of Our Lady of Bethlehem and gave it a place of honor in his first California mission, San Diego. He took the statue to his second mission, Monterey. His last days were spent at Carmel. After 36 years of exhausting missionary labor, Fr. Serra died on August 28, 1784. Source: , Sept. 2015
